I see the MSNBC fired Michael Savage a conservative radio talk show host they had hired to do a TV talk show after he made some offensive comments. I didn't watch the show - but I notice in this article posted below that the person who called him up on the air made some reference to "Don and Mike" and I wonder if it's related to the Don and Mike radio show or just a coincidence. Did anyone see this show or can comment on this?

MSNBC fires Savage on anti-gay remarks

NEW YORK - MSNBC on Monday fired Michael Savage for anti-gay comments.

The popular radio talk show host who did a weekend TV show for the cable channel referred to an unidentified caller to his show Saturday as a "sodomite" and said he should "get AIDS and die."

"His comments were extremely inappropriate and the decision was an easy one," MSNBC spokesman Jeremy Gaines said.

There was no immediate comment from Savage, according to a spokesman at his office in California.

The brash, tough-talking Savage is one of radio's hottest jocks. His Paul Revere Society advocates closing borders, deporting illegal immigrants, mandating health tests for immigrants and eliminating entitlement programs.

The televised version of "The Savage Nation" began March 8 despite the protests of such advocacy groups as the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

Aired at 5 p.m. EDT Saturday, Savage didn't translate into a television hit. He increased the ratings for the time slot marginally, according to MSNBC.

The incident that resulted in his firing began innocently enough. Savage was taking viewer phone calls about airline horror stories, and a male caller began talking about smoking in the bathroom.

"Half an hour into the flight, I need to suggest that Don and Mike take your ..." the caller said, before he was cut off and his words became unintelligible.

"So you're one of those sodomists. Are you a sodomite?" Savage asked.

The caller replied: "Yes, I am."

"Oh, you're one of the sodomites," Savage said. "You should only get AIDS and die, you pig. How's that? Why don't you see if you can sue me, you pig. You got nothing better than to put me down, you piece of garbage. You have got nothing to do today, go eat a sausage and choke on it."

He asked for another phone caller who "didn't have a nice night in the bathhouse who's angry at me today."

These bums "mean nothing to me," he said.

GLAAD spokeswoman Cathy Renna said of Savage's firing: "It's about time.

"This latest attack made the clearest case for why Savage has no place on any reputable news network. MSNBC witnessed firsthand exactly the kind of verbal assaults GLAAD's been warning them about for the past five months, and to their credit, they backed up their promises to hold Savage accountable."

I was never really a Don and Mike fan but they are geniuses compared to this guy.

Oh yeah,

I've listened to him often [missed this actual call], and he's quite intelligent, even though I disagree with much/most of what he says.

That aside; he Had to be fired. No decision needed. No-Brainer. And he should have apologized the Second he was fired, if not before, even if he already knew he was gonna be cut loose.

Why?

The pendulum swings, folks, what people can say on Radio/TV/whatever medium you choose; evolves. Words, phrases, whatever.

And in 2003; with what happened to Opie + Anthony and Bill Maher as just two examples; the people who hire these Hosts do so with this simple understanding: Be as cutting-edge as you want, but its YOUR name on the Show, and if you do something on-air that pisses off the worng people, the station won't take the hit, you will be summarily fired.

Unfair? Incredibly unfair, but the way it is these days. Piss off the wrong people, and next thing you know, everyone wants you fired. And even if your GM and PD stand up and support you [they won't]; it will do no good whatsoever when the pissed-off get the Nationals to pull their Ads, and then it's simple money.

Simple, but in the cases of O+A, Maher, and Savage, some substantial big money. And between money and a Host, the parent company, irrespective of what Anyone says, or what is Right, will Dr0p the Host.

An Aids comment like that? And then Savage challenging the person to sue him? In 2003? Right after Supreme Court decisions that struck down anti-gay laws? And new WHO estimate that AIDS deaths could reach 70 million?

Fair or not, the moment I read that he had said it, I was like, "He is SO Gone."

Not off topic at all; almost exactly the same thing happened to Maher.

In short, because of the story linked above about comments Maher made post- 9/11, he was, not too long after, fired by ABC.

He didn't get fired because of the comments. He got fired because his television show was a failure. He's much better on radio.
