View Full Version : question about Porn Pop-ups
Im not sure whether or not to believe my step mother, but she claims, its against the law UNLESS you've vistited a porn Site, for there to be any type of pornographic type of pop-ups on your comp. Is this true?

Don't know about that but I recently downloaded the google toobar that has a popup blocker built and its much better than the popup stopper I used to rave about.
Google Toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/)

That's the silliest thing I've ever heard. That's like saying Playboy can't buy an ad in a magazine.
But I've been using the old Google bar for over a year, didn't know about the 2.0 beta with the blocking. Just upgraded.

I don't think there's any regulation of porn advertising on the internet. It's certainly spread via spam every day.
Regarding google toolbar 2.0 beta, a word of caution from Google:
Important: By installing the 2.0 BETA version of the Google Toolbar you're agreeing to test software that is still being tweaked and perfected by our Toolbar Team. We encourage you to send us reports of any difficulties you encounter, along with your thoughts and suggestions....Note: No technical support is offered for the Google Toolbar 2.0 BETA.

I thought it was a bunch of bull shit. My Stepmother never knows what shes talking about. <p>My parnets comp has this bug, I dont even think its worth calling a virus, and its powered by this company that calls themselves Odyesus(not to sure on the spelling) that no matter WHAT I get a popup advertising this hard core porn and its fucking nuts. Im getting blamed for going on sites and according to them those are the reasons for the pop-ups. <p>Now my brillant father seems to think its that AND because you're connected to the internet all the time. He doesnt quite understand the concept of the cable modem yet. He seems to think that you can simply turn "turn the internet off" Now I figure the only way to do that is to A. turn off the modem, or B. go to files the $elect "work offline". What do you think?

First off, download Panicware's free version of Pop-Up Stopper at http://www.panicware.com/product_psfree.html
It blocks nearly all pop-ups and pop-unders.
Also, if you don't have it already download and install spyware search and destroy and run it to remove all the spyware on your computer. When you're finished, innoculate your computer against known spyware. Check for Upd@tes frequently.
It's available for free at http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download
Tell your dad that the people who inudate your computer with pop-up advertisements are very similar to the unsolicited spam that everyone receives every day. Recently one of the computer magazines estimated that 1/3 of e-mail is spam! Even non-computer saavy people have heard of spam. Perhaps this will mollify him.
Finally, if your dad disapproves of your going to porn sites that's his perogative. But if you do frequent these sites, there's no reason for you to feel guilty about it. These sites exist for a reason - people like porn.

use mozilla; there's a popup blocker built in and in the right hand corner it will notify you each time a pop up is blocked. but it woun't block those java popups.
there's legislation regarding spam in certain states. hopefully, popups will follow.

I loved Popup Stopper, it works great. But I think the google toobar is much better, that disclaimer isn't really anything, all BETA's have that. I've had zero problems.

2 days, 0 problems. And I was able to set RF.Net to allow pupups (for rfmail), but leave it blocking every other site. And Google is better at discerning which popups I want and which are popup ads.
