View Full Version : At what point does size matter?

A couple of caveats to begin:
1. This is not about penis size. I only used that to sucker people into reading my dull, boring post. If you want really unfunny, really stupid, sophomoric, thinly veiled innuendo, go talk to Alkey.
2. This is could get pretty messy, so some pronoun clarification might be in order. Whenever any words appear in the first person or any derivative thereof (I, me, us, ours etc.) I am referring to humans of all the size ranges that we come in. When the third person is used (he, his, her, them, theirs etc.) I am referring to humans of immense proportions. That is, of course, unless the antecedent makes the sentence obviously have a different meaning (e.g. The dog licked his balls.) Remember these things, they're important. On to the fun.

At what point does the size of an organism matter related to the distance it travels? If a human walks a mile, it's a mile. If I walk a mile, it's the same distance as if Kareem Abdul Jabbar walks a mile, and it's the same if Vern Troyer walks a mile. A mile is a mile is a mile. Now if an ant, on the other hand, walks a mile, (our mile) it certainly seems like a lot further to him. The obvious answer is that it doesn't matter. A mile really is a mile, is a mile is a mile. But that's not true. If a being was big, I mean really big, like thousands of miles big, he would be able to transverse thousands of our miles in a single bound. If he was even bigger than that, so big in fact the he could travel 186,000 of our miles in a second, he could break the speed of light. Since that is impossible, his distance traveled must be relative to his size. Or maybe it's not.

What if a creature of that size was moving at 186,000 of our miles a second, would he indeed break the speed of light relative to us, but not himself? Would he travel beyond our dimension and not realize it, all the while thinking he was just out for a morning jog?

So that brings me back to my original question, at what point does your size matter relative to the distance you travel? What is the watershed point? Is it different for people of every size, is Kareem's mile different from mine, we just use the standard mile for convenience? Does my cat hate me for making it go upstairs to shit? It might be the same distance to her as it is for me to go to A.C.

I hope this makes sense.

a mile is a mile, no matter how big or small the person/animal is. an ant still has to go the same amount of feet that you do to reach a mile. the only difference is the length of time it takes.

I think size really matters to people when they write ridiculously long posts about it to explain why it DOESN'T matter.

"I feel like I'm Han Solo, and you're Chewie, and she's Ben Kenobi, and we're in that fucked-up bar."

Ah...the greatness of Jay & Silent Bob

So what you're saying is that your penis can fly faster than that speed of light?

The lad obviously put some thought into this post. I think we owe him more than snide replies. I believe that size begins to matter at every incrimental step of which you describe. Forgetting for a moment our friend, the ant, or even your cat, let's consider human beings of different statures. Using your examples of Vern Troyer to you to Kareem Abdul Jabbar, who (let's assume for the sake of argument) are all human, a mile, although still a mile for each, would be a different experience for each of you. One can assume that Vern would be more tired, having expended more of his body's energies in order to reach the measured mile, whereas you may be less tired and Kareem even less tired than you, perhaps not even breaking a sweat, ommitting the variables of light and heat temperatures, and other biological uncertainties. The point being that among humans, size proportional to a desired distance goal is certainly beneficial to a larger model than a smaller one. Certainly there are variances, ie; weight, physical health, etc, but as a general rule a taller man who, naturally has longer legs, the appendages required to accomplish our stated goal, the walking of a mile, has the ability to accomplish that goal not only faster than a shorter man, but also easier, by expending less energy to do so. So, in humans at least, it is easy to say that size does indeed matter, relative to accomplishing distance measured tasks. As for the remaining part of your question, in my opinion ants and giants dont matter; I have yet to meet an ant that I couldnt take, and giants, well they just dont exist.

well faster than light travel in teh conventional sense is not possible. einstein pretty much set that in stone. but its all cause of relativity. light is a constant but time is a variable. as we speed up time slows down. however we dont notice it unless we go extremely fast. even if a person that large could move that fast the moment he got to the speed of light he would freeze. and once he slows down, time begins to move again. but if he was moving close to speed of light that person would age extremely slow as compared to us. since times exertion on that individual would b slower than its exertion on us. its all relative. all our theories that involve faster than light travel now, are not really breaking the relativity's laws, their just working around them. like wormholes theories. its like finding secret passage ways through space. however our best chance at time travel lies in black holes. the theoretically pull in time just as it does light and all other matter.

now that im thinking about it however, since light exists in both particle and wave form just as all matter, if it were possible to transform matter to light it would mave just as fast as light. but my knowledge of theoretical physics is limited, so maybe we should await Mike the Teacher.

I dont care how big you are, you're going to have to travel 1 mile to get there. How ever long it takes you or how fast your going doesnt change distance.

This question is the result of over thinking.

I suggest you numb your mind by playing Virtual Pong (http://www.pdmedia.net/games/curveball/index.htm)

If a person was as big as, let's say, the solar system. They would be able to reach the other side of the milky way alot faster that we would at our size. Does it matter that it's millions of miles? God is God because he's the biggest, fastest motherferraller out there.

Can something be small, real small, beyond neutrinos, beyond strings&frequencys, so small that it opens up to something huge like infinity?

Does my cat hate me for making it go upstairs to shit?

No, but you need to change the cat box NOW.

Anyone got the lyrics to that Laurie Anderson song from the early 80s, something like "Mach 20"?
In it she drew a parallel between the relative distance and time it takes for sperm to travel to an egg. She said if the sperm cell was a whale and it was swimming to Japan from the coast of South America, it would be travelling at mach 20 [or something] and said it would arrive in just a few hours [she'd figured the time, but I've forgotten what it was, now]
I think she went on to wonder what the whale would say when it got there.
Damn, it's been so long since I heard it. I sold the record years ago....
