I was actually schocked when i heard Dave Chappelle use the N word on his show. I remember looking dead serious at my brother like "Did you just hear that?" I didn't know you could speak like that on T.V.

When exactly I don't know, but modern society and culture have changed in their thinking enough to know that such words are hurtful and offensive. As a result the media when necessary will refer to it as the "n-word" so as not to offend anyone.

I heard the "n-word" when the USA channel showed Friday a couple months ago and I wasnt too surprised because it was a black movie and blacks are the only ones who can say the "n-word." It's stupid but whatever. I dont say nig....the "n-word" that much anyway so it doesnt effect me.

Refering to the hateful word "nigger" as the "N word" is certainly politically correct.

But as has been pointed out above, blacks use the term amongst themselves all the time. I find this analagous to women who call themselves "cunts" and gays who call themselves "queer." In their opinion, taking a word used for a long time in a derogatory sense and making it your own dispells some of the power of the word to hurt. Some even see it as a form of empowerment.

In the book "Nigger - The Strange Career of a Troublesome Word" by Randall Kennedy (and others with similar titles) a point is made that the word is still widely used. However, Kennedy, a Harvard Law School Professor opines that now when he hears the word nigger, he figures they're just advertising his book.

Anyway, I hear the "N" word all the time. At school, around my neighborhood, at the Indian gas station when the owner gets in a fight with an African-American driver because he supposedly jipped him of gasoline (which the owner does)...

I don't understand why it's censored on TV anymore. I think it's just to save suburbia from the obvious - that the "N" word exists and is still used. White people do get shocked by the fact that black people use it only cuz white people created the word and now it's like their not allowed to use it anymore. Any other race can use it for some reason, as long as they act black. At least around here, anyway. And some white kids too. America hasn't necessarily gotten soft. It's (and I'm referring to the powers that be) just gotten scared cuz of the fact that the minorities are having more influence in views and politics then before. I dunno...I just think this country is screwing up. We're trying to please everyone at the same time and that's just going to fuck everything up.

Well, it really depends on the person. I know some white guys who really grew up in the hood and around only black people that say it and everyone is comfortable with them saying it. But in general, especially in Texas, you just don't do it.

But I got special permission to use it from my boyfriend (yes, he's a 'n word') so ha ha, I can say it and you can't. :p

I believe that term was started by the media during the Mark Furhman........errr, I mean O.J. trial.

I heard Patrice on Tough Crowd last night, and he told a story about a show he did where his punchline was "nigger in a Buick", and he was amazed that they bleeped "Buick", and not "nigger". Comedy Central did not censor nigger or Buick, but bleeped heavily on the "C-word".

Accually, I think BASIC cable has some guidelines. I think that there is a time on basic cable that you can say those words... for example... The South Park Movie. I assume that that was one late. If you pay for premium channels, they can say or show what ever they want... ie: HBO.
