I was reading yahoo.com current headlines (I would try to link you but I don't know how) and it stated that the clownfish portrayed in the movie Nemo has the ability to change sex and size! Wow, scientist do all the cool stuff.

I copied and pasted this from the brief summary of the article:
Clownfish, the aquarium pet of choice since the release of the animated movie, live in such a rigid social structure in the wild that if one of the dominant breeding adults is removed, the size, status and even sex of the other clownfish change rapidly to return the group to the status quo
So, if the movie were real, either Nemo or Marlin would change into a girl and they would fuck each other?

Many species of coral reef fish are "bisexual" or more properly, hermaphrodites, as are lots of other fish, for example, striped bass.

clown fish arent hermaphrodites. they are assexual. they are never both sexes, just one at a time but can switch

snoogans, you are wrong. asexual means "the inability to be either sex" like an amoeba. a Hemaphrodite means "the ability to be either sex" like as Too Cute said, many species of fish.
I generally take Too Cute's opinion as fact in this, as its her area of study (biology, not hermaphrodites)

we are both wrong, your right about asexual. hermaphrodites are both sexes at the same time, clown fish arent simultaniously, just one at a time. i guess i dont know whats its called

i always thought asexual meant that the organism could produce offspring without a partner . either through mieosis or mitosis i forget which .
Completely melodramatic since birth .

yea trashy your right, clown fish are one sex and need another clown fish to make offspring. they can just change there sex to even out the population

ok, i'll put my 2 cents in here.
The clown fish is male and then after the hatching or birth of the young it becomes a female and starts the cycle all over again.

Ha ha DH actually I DID study hermaphroditism for a good long while.
Sorry snoogs, but you need to learn that I'm basically never wrong, particularly not about marine biology. Asexual literally means without sex - eg bacteria are asexual. Fish are sexual reproducers (for the most part; there are a few examples of parthenogenesis, which is where a female has offspring without a male being around).
Clown fish (and most other hermaphroditic fish) are "sequential hermaphrodites". There are not as many example of simultaneous hermaphrodites (many species of snails are simultaneous hermaphrodites where they trade sperm and eggs according to very simple but cool rules depending on size etc.) in the animal world however many plants are simultaneous hermaphrodites.
