When I was at work today, My son, Mike, called me to tell me that he is worried about getting laid off from his job(NYFD). I talked to him for awhile and basically told him not to worry, things will work out, blahm blah, blah. Now I have something else to worry about. A few days ago, my daughter, Janine, tells me that she is having problems with her fiance and can I give her some advice. More worries for me- that's my job!!
Well, on the way home from work, I was thinking these problems over and I started to do something that I haven't done in years- I started to pray, specifically the Hail Mary. This is something that I used to do as a kid with my Grandmother- she was a very religious person and tried to impart that in me and my brothers and sisters. Well, lo and behold, as I finished my prayer, a feeling of peace and solace came over me. No, my problems and my kid's troubles weren't solved but I felt that this wasn't the end of the world for us and that we would get through these trials. I couldn't believe that I felt better by putting my trust in a power that I have neglected these many years (especially after my wife died).
I know that there are alot of people on this board who don't believe in God but tell me- How do you get through the daily grind of life and all of it's pitfalls? I know now that I can't do it on my own and can use all the help that I can get!!

My three steps to feeling better:

1. Praying, As much as other wouldnt beleive it does work.

2. Playing Video games, nothing takes your problems away like hijacking a car and running people over in GTA.

3. Overthinking the prolbem, worries, etc. Often times if you think of the problem or whatever your worring about you'll see that it isnt that bad.

But thats just me, may sound wierd but it works.

Agreed... doing somthing that makes me feel good about myself, like that I have ultimate power with my machine guns, is always a good feeling when I am down or very frustrated.

Humor and the comfort of friends helps mor than anything else.

And even if you don't believe in god, just stick you r head in a church. Tell then you're not looking to get converted, but you just need someone to listen.

It's good to have someone who listens.

I do think that churches are very relaxing and open to everyone, but I think that I'd feel more comfortable to have a friend comfort me. although, I dont think I'd be able to comfort a friend, because I always try to make a joke out of somthing, which isnt always a good thing.

My cats.

When I come home from a shitty day, they're there for me. No judgments, no complaints. They nestle next to me, play fetch, and make me laugh.

And, this time of year, my fire escape. It's 5'x5' and I have flower pots and chairs. I go out there and enjoy the evening with the cats.

Reeshy, hope everything works out for your son and daughter.

My wife and son always provide the comfort that I need. But as far as personal comfort, I always turn to music. Nothing like a little Kiss, Aerosmith or Black Sabbath to ease the pain. I can also always get lost in a book while at work. Preferably wrestling books or even wrestling magazines and newsletters. And at home, I also love watching my favorite movies that I know by heart or watching old wrestling. Any of these will usually make me forget about my problems for a while.

Used to be that going to gym let me work out all of my vent-up steam, encouraged me to live a healthful lifestyle, and helped to look good.

Haven't gotten my ass there regularly in a while, but I know it would help me a lot to do so right now.

It's a chicken-egg problem -- I need a little bit of motivation to get back in the gym but I need to go back to the gym to get back that confidence and motivation.

I also like to eat shrimp.

The things I rely on now for comfort are not terribly good.

Putting the problems of life into God's hands helps because He can do more than you can, especially when you are overwhelmed. Im not particularly religious, meaning that I dont often go to His house, but when anxiety's or stresses are beyond my ability to cope, I place them in His hands and say the Rosary and somehow, it seems to help. Giving it over to a higher power is very comforting and thats where you are getting your peace from. There is nothing wrong with it, thats what God is there for. You dont have to be a religious nut, just go to Him when you cant support yourself alone.

sometimes i pray...i go out onto my deck in the backyard, look up at the stars and just ask for some relief of the pain i am in.

it also helps for me to talk it out with people...but before i talk to anyone about it, i write. over the years i have found that when i am most upset the only thing that gets me through it is just sitting there and writing out everythin thats on my mind. then i talk to a few friends and get their input.

i listen to songs that make me cry, i hate to cry but it makes it worse if you keep that inside. so i just get my one big cry out.

and lately, my b.f. has been such a great help with something that has been going on in my life.

My girl, my friends, and family can be a big help.
At lot of times I tend to be creative to take my mind off of things, so I'll design something, or do work on my website or whatever. I have prayed on really dark days, like for instance when my mom had open heart surgery it was scary enough and I love her so much that I wanted to pray for her. In the chance that God exists and if my prayers could be answered and be of help to someone than I will pray. As for comfort though, it's generally having good friends and people who love you around you to help you get through and comfort you.

Reeshy, I hope everything works out for your son and daughter.
