View Full Version : Why is electrical wire taped across the road?
bunnyluvsthem

While driving in my automobile, I sometimes observe that there are wires carefully taped across the roadway.
Most often, these are two wires one after the other, separated by about 3 feet, and always running perpendicular to the directional travel of the road . Sometimes it is only one wire. Sometimes it is two wires, but they are about 4 car-lengths apart.
Driving across these wires always makes a subtle "bump-bump" sound as the tyres of my automobile pass over them.
What are these wires and what do they mean, what purpose do they serve, who puts them there, who removes them, and why?
I love them! I Love them! Both of them! Both of them are good! BOTH of them! Both Ron, and Fez! Oh, they are good! mmmmm! Juicy! They are good! Creamy! Creamy! I love them! Both of them! Ron and Fez! Ron and Fez! Oooooo! They are GOOD!

Some of them count the number of cars passing daily i beleive, i think thats what most of them are, then again they could just be electrical lines.

Why would they need to count the number of cars passing by daily?
Why would they need 2 wires to accomplish this - wouldn't one be enough?
Who are "they"?
Why would "just" electrical lines need to be carefully taped across the roadway?
Why do you and others like you continue to disregard the ' "i" before "e" except after "c" ' rule?

"They" are your town officials, or government.
2 wires if probably to make sure they have the right amount.
"They" do this on a couple of roads to see how much traffic is there and such, dont ask me why its probably for their studies.
Electrical is how its spelled
and dont ask me why they would use these.
And again, im not even sure about this, i know some are, but others could be something completely diffrent.

The DOT is usually the one's doing this. They do it in order to estimate which roads will need expansion in the future. Also how much wear and tear that road takes in a given period.
And it's not just an electrical wire, it's a sensor attached to a counter.

Generally this is done for multiple purposes.
Such as: Counting the amount of cars in the area that pass through on the road. This is done for reasons such as...a new business coming into the area that will be on the same road or nearby and trying to determine the impact of such business to the road. It is also done for safety, if statistics or enough complaints show that a lot of accidents occur on a given road, the DOT will check to see if either more lights or traffic signs are needed.
Also, if the road is due to be renovated the DOT may want to determine the impact of cars being forced to use alternate routes, etc. This is generally what it is used for.
Usually you'll also see off to the side of the road will be a box that the wires are running to that is counting the cars.

They're actually hoses, or at least they used to be. When a car drives over them the air inside compresses and acts on a sensor. It's the same idea with the bell that rings when you pull into a gas station to alert the gas jockey.

Its actually a speed gauge of sorts. depending how fast the back tires roll over after the front tires do, thye can tell how fast the cars are traveling and the time of day etc. then They set up speed traps in high speeding areas.
Before you get smart, if cars are traveling fast enough to be speeding then the following cars would be several seconds behind so there is no confusion as to if the back tire is counted as the front and then the following cars front would be counted as the back, got it?

Usually when I see them, I get a knife out and cut them right where they meet the box that counts the cars. Typically, after you see them, a new traffic light or stop sign will appear in that area and slow you down even more, so cutting the hose will not allow them to count the cars and will result in your trip not being slowed down. Its your duty as a "concerned citizen" to cut that hose.

I appreciate all the truth that was told here, it has enlightened me greatly to the real reason behind these wires. I believe they serve a dual purpose of counting the cars, as well as functioning as a speed trap.
But, if I were to cut the "hose", as suggested, wouldn't someone see, and tell on me?
Or, couldn't they come and catch me at the very moment that I am in the middle of committing my crime?
Where would I keep my car, while this is all going on? Could they steal my car? Or impound it?
Could I be incarcerated as a result of being told on, and subsequently being caught red-handed? Could I be Detained?
And even if I was lucky enough not to get caught, or Detained, wouldn't they just do it all over again the next day, perhaps posting a guard for the wires?
Could they then look everything over using Binoculars?
And wouldn't I be risking bruises and being caught in the brush and bramble, in every case?
I do not think I will heed this particular advice. Too risky.

reefdwella's post covers it for the most part...
as far as Funkman...I assume that was a joke too.
But just in case....
2 strips are needed to determine speed.
If traffic counts are just what the DOT or traffic consultant is looking for, they can adjust the count accordingly.

The only way that two of those hoses could detrmine speed would be if there was only one car going over them at a time, but since I never have seen those guages in a single lane, it can only be used to count cars (what about 18 wheelers?? Wouldnt that mess up the count?), they divide the counts from both hose guages and get an estimate of cars that travel over the road. Thats why I cut them hoses, because the town must have an idea that a large # or cars are going down that stretch of road, and therefore some needed traffic control is needed. When you cut the hose, it cant count the cars and so they cant determine the # so they cant put up a new light or stop sign. If you enjoy stopping for light's and stop sign's, by all means, defend those counters and refuse to cut them hoses! Typically, when they are planning to put in a new store like a Home Depot or some other large store or office building, they need to know how the addition of this will affect traffic flowing through an area, so they need to count the cars before and after the construction. Then, they simply add whatever traffic control (aka light/stop sign) will be needed to alleviate the traffic. The hoses count the cars, without the count, they cant tell how traffic was affected. No count = no traffic control. Cut the hose.

first off anyone who censors themselves on a message board i start suspect about. say fuck, its alot easier than readin and seein ef and wonderin if someone fucked up and tryin to figure out what it means. as per this thread, the reason sometimes there are 2 wires is cause one is for traffic and one is for heavy traffic, vehicles over i believe 7000 pounds. that way they can see what highways are more commerically used for toll or for legal purposes as well as road expansion and to find out how many cars come by incase they have to do road work and detour everyone through residential neighborhoods

Why is electrical wire taped accross the road?
If it wasn't taped down or otherwise secured it would get lose and pose a potential hazard. :)
BTW, electrical wires aren't necessary. It could be just a pressure sensative wire, like the kind in the gas stations that ring a bell as you go over them to let the attendant know there's someone at the pump.
