What do those balls on power lines do?

To stop squirrels from invading... the other side.

And to let small planes know that there are powerlines there.

I am certain that this is not True. These wires are very low, too low for planes.

But I too have also wondered about these wires with balls.

What are they, what purpose do they serve, why do they need more than one on each individual wire?

I love them! I Love them! Both of them! Both of them are good! BOTH of them! Both Ron, and Fez! Oh, they are good! mmmmm! Juicy! They are good! Creamy! Creamy! I love them! Both of them! Ron and Fez! Ron and Fez! Oooooo! They are GOOD!

I am certain that it is true. These "balls" that you see are near major thruways and small airports.

No. You are Wrong, unfortunately. They are not even higher than regular power lines, why the special hanging balls?

i heard they were there so if a line went down due to weather conditions or such it would hit the ground and bounce right back in place. this way it doesn't become a hazard to people who live in the area.

and sometimes the electrical workers use them to play volleyball...

They are called aviation balls. They're for planes and as well as birds. To prevent tradgedy, power outages, and even wild fires.

Those balls are used on long straight away roads that can be used as a landing strip if theres some problem at the airport and a craft needs to make an emergency landing. They serve as marker lights basically. The planes are equiped with a certain thing that ties into the components within the ball and tells the pilot how to adjust to make a proper landing on the road.

Mad props to Fluff for the sig and C.O.soup for hosting!

Isnt aviation balls what pilots get when they spend too much time in the cockpit on those transatlantic flights?

Bill, only if their pants are too tight or they don't use a condom during sex.

The balls serve as notice to pilots about the location of power lines. The lines are hard to see from the air at high speed. The balls are not.

They also protect the birds during migration.

"The multiple spheres are spread out along the length of the power line so that pilots can get a good idea of the length and location of the line. Other creatures benefit from the warning spheres, too. A paper published in 1985 showed that use of the orange spheres on power lines in South Africa decreased the number of collisions between fledgling vultures and the lines. Several other studies have shown that the use of the spheres (or other, similar warning devices) can help reduce bird mortality due to collisions with the power lines during seasonal migration. It turns out that installing, replacing, or locating the spheres along the power lines is a rather difficult and dangerous job, often requiring a helicopter to hover very close to the line while a technician works with the spheres." From a site with an interesting name (http://www.docwhatsit.com/archives/orange_spheres.html)

First, am I the only one who looks for hidden white text in djeviled's posts?
Second, the Aviation balls are for planes as you will generally see them near heleports, airports and prison's, believe it or not. They are also to keep squirrels from trying to cross the lines.

They're there just in case it floods. If like 30 feet of water were to cover the area, the power lines would float.

I have some of the "balls" near my house. Its nowhere near any airport, but it is over a river area. Maybe it is to keep those Granite State squirrels from crossing the river.
