Because annual cicadas emerge in July/August. We had a very cool June so they could be a week or two delayed. You should be hearing them soon. I just saw my first fireflies a few days ago, which is somewhat late, I think.

Periodical cicadas come out in June, but they only do it ever 13 in 17 years or so in a given area - clearly you do not live in a brood IX locale (which would be NC/WV/VA) because you did not hear them this year!
