What a sad story he turned into. He could've been the best hitter who ever lived.

in the light of this current injury .....

who's the bigger disappointment: ken griffey jr. or grant hill ?

in terms of potential and promise ......

You beat me to it -- I was going to compare those two!

I'd say Junior since he came into the League at 19 with a lot of hype.

your nuts. at least griffey had a career. he almost has 500 homers and played like 9 or 10 solid years. hill woulda had a great career, but it was ruined by injuries, so thats a much bigger dissapointment

grant hill is a much bigger disappointment than junior. junior was named played of the 90s, how could he be a disappointment. if he doesnt play another game he will be a first ballot hall of famer cuz of his defense and the numbers hes already put up

very, griffey could possibly be a hall of famer with the numbers he has, but to say first ballot or even a lock to get in is kind of a stretch. but there is no way its as dissapointing as hill who we should be discussing whether or not he should go to the hall, but instead we discuss how many goddamn ankle surguries one man can have

he definately make the hall first time. 11 time all star, 10 gold gloves, player choice for player of the 90s, even with his 4 shitty seasons with cincy where his numbers have gone down he has 481 hrs and a lifetime 294 average.

ken griffey out for the season

deja vu?

I think Griffey's still the bigger disappointment because he was on his way to breaking Aaron's record and then he started having all the injury problems, whereas Hill didn't ever seem like he was going to be a huge star. And I would've really been pulling for Griffey, especially that Bonds now thinks he's the baseball god. Griffey seems more humble, but maybe that's because he never got the chance to be where Bonds is.

thats ridiculous. coming outta duke and into his forst 2 years of pro ball, Hill looked like he was on his way to the hall. he had more skill at guard than most in the league at that time. yeah griffey was chasing records, but its alot more dissapointing to have that much talent and never get a chance to even chase records cause of the injuries. at least jr got in a bunch of amazing years. plus he is only 33, and was gettin his stroke back, so he is gonna give it another go next year. where as grant hill can barely even stand up alone

even had griffey stayed the course, i dont think he woulda came near being what bonds ended up being. griffey wouldnt have sniffed 500 500, prob wouldnt have walked that much, and the OBP and avg is higher than griffey's were. somewhere in the last 4-5 years bonds became the best player to ever play the game. griffey or no griffey

Griffey may have broken 61 along with Williams if there was not a strike in 94

i have to agre with snoogans on this one cuz hill only had 6 really good seasons where he averaged 22 points 8 rebs and 7 assists which are very good stats and now it looks hell never play again. jr is comin back from his injuries which were very freak accidents.

yeah but thats irrelevant to the discussion. bonds may have already passed willie mayes if there was no strike, and the expos were lookin like they woulda won it all. now they suck, griffey is a scrub, and bonds dominates. and matt williams never hit more than 30 after that. to be honest, i think griffey would have been surpassed by alot of the guys now. i dont think he ever woulda had 97 RBI at the break and no one ever really even talks about delgado.

Bonds the best player in the Game. He is playing in the Era of poor pitching, smaller ball parks, steroids, juiced balls

when are we goin to realize that 294 doesnt mean what it meant in 1988. those numbers arent a lock for anything nowadays. and to respond to your juiced ball error, the ball has nothing to do with the offensive on slaught. it has to do with the fact that the players are bigger stronger faster, maybe juiced, and because now there are 30 teams that have to have 11 pitchers instead of 12 teams. so the pitching kinda blows *cough john franco cough*

one, the thresh hold was 500 knocks, he is a bit short. 2, eddie murray had better offensive numbers, and he didnt go first ballot. and as far as defense, your judged by your peers, and since i can probably come up with 3 just centerfielders who are better defensive players than griffey, the gold gloves dont lock anything. thats the problem here, you have to judge griffey against his era, not against what was done in 1970. 481 homers and a 294 life time avg in this day is whats called good, not nearly hall of fame stuff, especially first ballot

i doubt griffey will be a first ballot hall of famer, it'll take afew years ..... "what could've been" will haunt him the way it did for mantle ..... griffey's seattle years were amazing, but the last few years of playing half the season will hurt his legacy ..... that is, unless he comes back (and remains) healthy enough to run off a few more classic years .....

the cloud that hangs over hill's career is that he was proclaimed to be the (first) next jordan ..... great game, a college champion and great 'marketability' ..... and apart from a few sprite commercials, he never reached that lofty potential

i think that home run totals (500 plateau) do weigh less these days, but batting averages are just as valid as they were 30 yrs ago ....

there are more players that hit 50+ in a season in the last few years than ever before, but how many have hit over .350 or come close to .400 ...?

no they arent. everyone forgets the fact that PITCHING IS WATERED DOWN. 30 teams have 11 pitchers, they arent going to be as good. Granted the guys are stronger and do try to homer more, but still. i discount all stats based on the easier pitching. look at the all star game. best hitters in the league and the whole game they had trouble catchin up with the all star pitchers. but somehow when its not allstars pitching, carl crawford is hittin homers. and to respond, more guys hit 300 than used to, thats why 300 is the hall of fame benchmark. but id say more guys hit 300, and thats why you only hear big deals made when guys are hittin 320, cause its more common now

so are the batters -- the entire game is watered down ......

a large spate of home runs, has not meant that overall hitting has improved why haven't there been a .400 hitter since williams .....
