I was listening to the July 14th show, when they were discussing sad pet stories. A caller had just talked about a pet dog he had, that ate a piglet. Ron made this intriguing comment, "There are no natural deaths in nature. You never hear about an old lion retiring. There is no fish in the sea that dies of old age. They all die in some horrible murder." I would never in a million years have thought up something like that, but when you think about it, that's a very interesting idea. That "natural death" is not actually natural. Violence is in every living beings' nature. That idea is very comforting to me, especially in the violent times we're living in. That's one of the reasons I love listening to the Ron and Fez show. They make reality comforting. And Ron, in my opinion is a genius. I can't believe the brilliant things he says sometimes.

First thing that comes to mind is an Elephant's quest for a natural death in the "Elephant Graveyard" if I am getting that name correct. Secondly, the nature we are exposed to is from television which concentrates on action and violence. No one would watch National Geographic for the animals that die naturally.

Ron Bennington is one of the sharpest people I have ever heard, this is why I listen and am a fan. However, that is an old bit I've heard before and actually one I stole and used to tell at parties, big laughs.

Hey Floyd

How else would he be able to pull off so many characters on the air? I just can't believe how many he retired of late. Some of the best posters here are really Ron at his finest. Guess that clues you in that I'm not one of them.

He's one of them!

*points finger*

I think a lot of deaths happen naturally but are just not lie down and die stuff.

Natural would be more like freezing to death from inability to find shelter because of brain trouble from age, starvation from lack of energy to obtain steady food, straying from the pack, etc.

Humans don't have it much better by doing the opposite. I've seen plenty of miserable people in old age homes going thru years of unpleasant (putting it lightly) existance. Not to mention burning thru their families funds and life energy which I don't think would be their wish if they had their minds clear.

That "natural death" is not actually natural. Violence is in every living beings' nature. That idea is very comforting to me, especially in the violent times we're living in.

It comforts me also. It makes me realize that I'm NOT a bad person, and that when I kill, it's only natural. If I was ever caught, which of course, I never will be, I now have my defense.... It's basic nature. :)

"natural death" is not actually natural

First, define "natural"

Is it natural that teleromes shorten as we age and the cells ability to accurately reproduce themselves declines? Ultimatlely it is this failure (and its sequala) that cases death. Is it natural that people die at all? It's the normal course of events, but natural to me implys that something is inherently and demonstrably correct. Merely because we're used to things happening a certain way doesn't mean that it is the "natural way."

Is it natural that people are murdered or die of disease?

Is this "nature" genetic or environmental?

Theists might argue that all that occurs is part of some grand design and that there is a purpose to everything. If so, than nothing is "natural" as it's part of some divine beings directed plan.
From a strictly evolutionary perspective anything that happens after one has kids is irrelevant, as one has already passed on their genes to the next generation. Those best suited to the environment will live on to pass on their genes. Is it natural to live past the point of fertility? Remember that evolution is not directed but subject and caused by random events.

Ron is not smart...he's brillant. He only has to look at the nature $election process in his own environment. How many interns has he eaten and disregarded? I wonder if he will be as fucking ponderous when the process comes he and Fez's way.

Eat my monkey.

i jst like the fact that all the books he quotes, or makes anykind of reference to...are all books i've read. vonnegut-slaghterhouse 5, catch 22 by heller. he talks about steinbeck, but not the good one's like tortilla flat or canary row. but he's very well read. he even brought up reading stephen hawking, a brief history of time. cool stuff...
