With the advent of computers and home video gaming systems, are people still playing board games like they used to? When was the last time you played Monopoly, the Game of Life, Risk, Clue, Chutes and Ladders, Trivial Pursuit, etc.? Or what board games are you playing now and what was your favorite?

Ron and Fez need YOU...to be the #1 thread on this board!

Define "board game". You've got your mass market Milton Bradley stuff like Scrabble, Monopoly, Risk, and Stratego. No one's been able to reinvent that wheel in quite some time.

...Unless you go to Germany, who they are so uptight that can only have fun competitively. Fortunately for the adventerous, it's led to some great games, like Settlers of Cattan, Puerto Rico and Carsacone. You'll have to go to dedicated hobby shop like the one I work at to find them.

Then there's your social games like Pictionary, Taboo, and Apples to Apples. They probably get more play than MB games nowadays.

I don't know where you put card games like Uno on that list. From there you can easily get into stuff that's not derived from Hoyle's, like Fluxx, Munchkin, Management Material, Lunch Money (for the excessive violent), and Guillotine.

On the outskirts of all this is Cheapass Games. CG looked at board games and made an observation: "These things are two fucking expensive." So they set about making board games as cheaply as possible, by printing single color boards and cards on regular card stock, and leaving out the dice, tokens, and pawns that you have from the dozen other games you have sitting in your closet. Up until last year, they wouldn't even spend money on a box, instead packing all their games in envelopes. For seven bucks, you can get an excellent board game from Cheapass, if you don't mind scrounging for parts.

Can you tell I sell this shit for living? And yes, I get alot of people looking for it. If you really want to go nuts, try http://www.boardgamegeek.com/.

There's one called Imaginiff that's great for groups. It won the Mensa $elect prize a couple of years ago.

Basically, you pick a person in the group to be the object of the "Imagine If..." card you read. So the question would be like: "Imagine if Nick were a superhero. Which one would he be?"

Everybody secretly picks one of six choices. You try to pick the most popular answer. Great game, but you really need to know the people with whom you're playing.

wow, Stalker Catty beat me to Settlers of Cattan....

I love that game, I think I've played it 50 times and actually won once, but still an awesome game. I Must have "longest road"

I don't think Apples to Apples and Uno count as board games, more like card games... and Munchkin is closer to Magic: The Gathering than it is Uno, except without all that "collecting" stuff

I absolutely love the Lord of the Rings board game... though I have yet to be in a group that can beat Sauron

but I enjoy Monopoly, Stratego, Trivial Pursuit, Risk and Scrabble... and I LOVE Clue, but nobody in my circles seems to own a copy. I may go out and get the Simpsons one.

I also want to try those new stratego games I've been seing in the past few years, with the high fantasy stuff.

Yeah, but I don't know anyone that takes Munchkin seriously enought to try to make a living at it. As for it's nature... well, yeah, that's what a Munchkin is.

I LOVE Clue, but nobody in my circles seems to own a copy. I may go out and get the Simpsons one.
I agree with you on Clue. It's actually one of the easier to acquire MB games out there, with the licenced versions and all (Dungeons & Dragons Clue? :quest: ) I also get a kick out of Cheapass' Kill Doctor Lucky, which is a sort of prequel to Clue. Instead of trying to deduce the killer, your actually all running around trying to kill the victim, Dr. Lucky. At tonight's game, he sure lived up to that name.

I'm trying to remember a board game from my childhood. I'm guessing it had something to do with elections, because the board was a map of the USA. All the states had their number of delegates printed on them. That's the only thing that I can remember about it. I just got to thinking about it, because it obviously had a good effect. I can still remember (for the most part) what states have the most delegates because of that game. Anyone else remember this game?

This isn't it, but it's a cool game. [Is there any chance it was "1960: The Making of the President" that you were talking about? It might be too new, but it is really similar to what you were talking about. Linky Linkerton (http://www.zmangames.com/boardgames/1960.htm).]

I remember one of the questions in Trivial Pursuit was if you called this number what was the location of that phone number. The answer was the White House.

I called that number backed in the day to see if it was true and it was the White House! I hung up the phone real quick, hoping they wouldn't be able to track my number. I was pretty young back then and all I thought about was that the FBI, Secret Service would come knocking on my door or something.

Now that I think about it now, it was probably the public phone number to the White House that's listed in the phone book.
