I saw Lewis Black perform at Great Adventure last night, and I have never had more respect for him as a performer. Everything that could have gone wrong did go wrong. He was performing in the "Showcase Theater" which is basically a glorified circus tent. It is right nest the The Chiller and Freefall, so every couple of minutes we would hear a whoosh that would obscure what he was saying. His opening line was classic: "It's always been my dream to perform in a tent under a rollercoaster."
He withstood the that first distraction. The second came about ten minutes into his profanity laced act when he noticed a bunch of young kids sitting in the first row to his right. He went over there and said something to the kids. But he went on, profanity and all.
Then once the rollercoaster shut down thunderstorms rolled in. So instead of gearing a rollercoaster every couple minutes we heard much louder rolls of thunder. To top that off a monsoon rolled in that produced a constant umbrella sound hitting the tent. And as if that wasn't enough, the tent sprung a leak and started dripping on the stage, right next to Lewis. After the 100th roll of thunder, the best moment of the night happened. He just had it and lit up a cigarette on stage. Then some old lady usher comes running down and tells him to put it out. His line: "I feel like I'm 15 again."
Despite all that it was a great show. The crowd loved it too, except the people who had children there who were horrified.
