How are dams erected when there's a river running through them? Do they create a temporary one in some fashion to keep the water away while they build the dam? I've always wondered how they made those things.

They usually divert the river, or build the dam where they want the dam to be, then divert the river to where the dam is. Damn it!http://www.photo.net/photo/pcd2882/hoover-dam-aerial-91

Watch the History Channel, they show the building of the Hoover Dam about five times a week. For the Hoover Dam they dug tunnels through the surrounding mountains to redirect the river. Then two small dam were built to keep the water out of the construction site. It makes more sense with visuals.

The building of the Hoover Damn was really interesting and it did show the temporary diversion of the water.
However, small damns, where the current doesn't run to fast, can be built w/o diverting water - like a beaver builds a damn.
