Theyre calling her the Queen of Salsa. Theyre blocking off roads days upon days for her. She's having wakes in 2 major US cities. Who the hell is she??!!! Now, I'll admit that I'm not the biggest salsa fan, but I know some names --Ruben Blades, Tito Puente...ya know--famous people. I truly had not heard her name until 3 (4?) days ago when she died. But this lady is getting the send off of the century! Tito Puente, who EVERYONE has heard of, didnt get this kind of turnout. What's the deal???

celia cruz scared the ever-loving shit out of me. that soda commerical when that really hot chick spanish chick is dancin and then they change the shot to celia cruz "singing" ruins everything for me. that one chick is hot, but celia cruz is so manly and...ugh. nasty.

Celia Cruz dominated latin music for 40 years and managed to do it without focusing attention on anything but her amazing talent.
She wasn't pretty by regular standards I guess, but her humanity was the amazingly beautiful thing about her.
She just recently performed on the Latin Grammies broadcast on CBS, and was well over 70 and about to have surgery on a cancerous brain tumor.
It's ok not to have heard of her, if you don't listen to Latin music she didn't have many English hits. Wyclef Jean (Fugees) featured her on his remake of "Guatanamera" in his solo debute album "Carnaval." If you want to you can check out her website (http://www.celiacruzonline.com/).
Now we can all resume insulting her because I doubt her amazing success is worth commenting on.

I had never heard of her before like 3 days ago either. It turns out she's my sister's boyfriend's godmother. They apparently have pics of her all over the house. Why?? I could barely look at the one in the paper.

That's how I found out who she was. Then I started seeing her on TV and on the Latin Grammy's or shows featuring Latin artists. She was very talented and it's too bad people don't really know who she is.

I didn't mean to offend anyone by not knowing her, I've just never heard of her. I've listened to lots of Latin music and know plenty of musicians, but I never heard of Celia Cruz.
I did read up on her in some articles I found last night though. I'll be checking out her website when I get home as well.

I had heard of her for years, but just never actually listened to any of her work outside of a few guest spots.
Fuck everyone else. They probably think J-Lo is too "Latin" for them.

No need to get snippy, folks. I asked a question. There is no doubt she has lots of fans, I was just wondering why if she's so huge, I hadnt heard of her til she died. (Selena's death was big cause it was murder and she was a cute star on the rise). The biography on Celia's website helped a little; she was recently in 2 big movies, altho I didnt see em. And I think Ive actually heard her sing Guantanemera; if it's the song I'm thinking of though, it's not very salsa-ey. I do not wish to take away the obvious outpouring of love she is receiving from her fans. Everyone should get a send off like this. But one of my original questions remains--why didnt Tito Puente get this treatment?
<img src="http://rfcop.50megs.com/images/aggiesox.gif">Go Saux!!! Thanx Aggie
I recognized her from Univision (where I drool over the gorgeous women) but I wasn't aware of who she was and her place in Latin music.

why didnt Tito Puente get this treatment?
Well, for one, Tito had a two episode guest spot on "The Simpsons", and really, IS there a bigger honor than that?
And secondly, Tito was nowhere near the star that Cruz was. Them's the breaks.

wha?? wha? what??? again, I'm not a fan of the genre, but i wudda thought he was bigger, simply because he had an english-speaking audience as well--not to mention, I had heard of him. Poor guy. He's probably controlling the weather--pissed that people are mourning her so well--"what about me??!!!!" (pushes the thunder/lightning button) "glass horse-drawn carriage?!!" (heavy rain/flash flood lever) "2 city tour??!!!" (tornado).

Actually, Celia was bigger because she was a singer. A lot of Tito's success came from collaborations with other artists and writing.
I wasn't snippy. It's just she was a lot more than just ugly. I'm by no means an expert, but I do know that it takes an immense amount of talent, perseverance, and quality to dominate an entire genre and endear yourself to people from all over the world for 40 years. She was a really amazing individual by all accounts.

As a person who has some familiarity with Celia Cruz, I'm surprised to find that I am in the minority on this board. But then again, American culture tends to ignore lots of artists who have great impact and influence over other cultures.
Culturally, I always recommend looking beyond what's directly in front of your face every so often. You'll find there's some great stuff out there that you never had any idea about.

My friend Carmen and I were at a Cuban restaurant a few months ago. There were pics of Celia Cruz everywhere. She told me how much she was revered in her culture.
To be honest, I had never heard of her, either, but she was a cultural icon.
This article left me a little sad. (http://www.nydailynews.com/front/story/103180p-93336c.html) The church couldn't find it in their hearts to understand her political situation.

She will be missed, celia cruz was one of the leaders in salsa music, yet it is too bad not to many people do not know her and her music until now. Unlike Tito puentes who was able to reach both english and non-english audiences with different artists with the music played with and the music he created.

I don't want to shock anyone, but there's some people who don't know who Bob marley, the rolling stones or the beatles are. Hey, sometimes, it's good to not know something, because when you finally learn something about it, you might get turned onto it.
All I knew about her was that she was this ugly old lady who sung in a language I can hardly speak. Good enough.

You're just trying to be a dick which is fine, but you're not funny.
What you are is one of those misinformed assholes that won't bother to ever look beyond what is fed to you by the media but somehow believe you are informed or cultured or superior to anyone else.
Instead of listening to the Rolling Stones you could just listen to N'Sync, they're obviously more attractive and therefore a better group musically.

Oh, because she's dead now, we have to pretend like we can't say anything negative! I apologize seriously if you held Celia Cruz up higher than I did. I know who the woman was, and I've heard of her before her death. And I thought that she had a huge, unattractive nose. villify me. I guess I deserve it. I'm the meanest guy in the world.
