Wow,
I know there's a 'here's the band' thread, but dang!!!... no on'es reporting in...
At 8:30pm I say what the hell and head into manhattan; good night for the city; the heat and humidity were pretty low for a late July.
Wow, it sucks not drinking. I don't mean the not drinking part; I just feel like an ass walking around with a water bottle; they need to make a water-in-a-beer bottle looking thing. I mean besides Budweiser...
The stage was a bit smaller then the stage at the Hard Rock. Wait the entire room was smaller. Just kidding.
But it was a blast; I caught the Eggplant Queens last few songs. Two? Three lead singers?
Harry Elvis: the kid went up and did his stuff. A polite audience, and an honorable stand-up. Teacher knows #1 phobia is speaking in front of a crowd. Harry did his thing and I got some laughs and didn't get some laughs, but he hung in there and did something that's extrememly difficult for a comedian to do; not ramble or go super-blue or insult the crowd if/when a joke falls flat. Like gunnery Seargant Hartman said of Private Pyle: He's got Guts, and Guts is Enough...
He did have an interesting stage gimmick of actually standing three feet in front of the lights so no one could see anything but a silouette. Is this what the New Comics are doing?
Was he good/bad? Um I was standing next to two professional comedians [insert joke here] during the set, so I will defer to them if they wish to comment elsewhere.
The keyboard player was next. He got up and said somethings into the Mic. I surmised it was a comedy routine about 4 minutes in. I won't judge him either, but Harry Elvis looked better and better everytime this guy spoke. No offense! [Rodney Dangerfield eyeroll]
Crankcase: A great show for a unit [insert next joke here] that has some new musician's in it. Jersey Rich; Bass was loud and clear. Nice bass line on that Pretender's song [Brass in Pocket?]. Friday, way to go! Everyone else sounded great. And they played some easy to play songs [sweet home alabama] and some not easy to play [london calling, the STP song that escapes me]. Great guitar work on that one. Mikey D as usual: the Man. But what, no drumsticks chucked into the crowd by the dozen? Wassup wit dat?!
You'd think two guy who have been doing comedy and live gigs for the majority of their lives would be jaded by now. Nope. One is 5 feet from the band checking them out with the others up front; the other is hanging; being as enthusiastic as one can when I'm told he's utterly exhausted; didn't look it at all, but these guys have the schedule from hell at present.
These guys making the gig Made the Gig.
Best part = a nice intimate setting; I have a feeling next Friday will be a teeensy bit crazier.
Worst Part = A shadow I saw. Not happy. Not good.
I had a blast.
