View Full Version : Can I get a scanner to work without software?

OK. My father was given a scanner from his company. They were throwing it out because they were updating all the conputers and shit.

He brought me home a box full of serial connector cables and a Hewlett Packard Scanjet IIc. The thing is REALLY Heavy and bigger than these new, streamline scanners I've seen lately. So that probably means it's a few years old.

Now I haven't even plugged it into my comp yet. But my question is what can I really do with it? I guess I can go look at Packard's website for a driver, but what can I do without its program?

Is this thing garbage? Or is the only way to get it to work so round about and time consuming that it's not worth it?

no go without the cd. call hp and they could probably send you the software if you can't find it on their website.

but the scanner might be crap; they've come a long way in the past few years, especially speed wise.

Sorry. I really should have just checked the HP site before I bothered to post this. I'm downloading some software as we speak. Or rather, as I speak. Or rather, as I type things I would have spoken if we were talking about this face to face.

It also suggests that I try to just plug in the scanner, then turn on my comp and windows may recognize it and use a generic scanner driver. I think I'll just download the software 1st. I'm not quite sure if I'm downloading software to use the scanner with or hte driver. I think it must be software because it's like a 5 MB file.

I am a little concerned with the fact that it says HP is no longer making Upd@tes for this scanner. I guess that means it might be older than I thought it was. But since I don't have money for even the cheapest of scanners, I will have to make due with this one. I wonder how the specs are on it? I'll have to look that up on the site too. It BETTER be a good one! It's huge!

Generally I have found HP to be pretty good with their drivers, so if the latest version hasn't been Upd@ted in some time, it's usually because the last version has worked very well on various platforms without incident. Download whatever driver software they have and give it a try. Also, if you have Windows XP I'm sure the driver for that scanner should be on the CD.

My only concern is the program I need to make it work. Drivers and program software are 2 different things, right?

I know my grandmother's scanner has a whole program to get the scanner going, or open it in photocopier mode for instance.

If I can't get that then every driver in the world is useless.

If by program software you mean something like photo editing software, than the answer is yes. If you have a photo image editor like Photoshop and something along that line, than as long as the scanner driver is installed it should work the scanner drivers.

I just mean something to work it. There are no buttons on it, so I need on screen commands to start the thing and fix settings, you know? The one my grandmother has came with software that starts the scanning process, sets DPI, shit like that.

I have never used Photoshop to do anything like that. Will it open some sort of command panel for me or something? And will it display the scanned photo in Photoshop for me to edit?

under file -> import -> "scanner name"
the scanner sw will open the image in photoshop, and give you options like dpi, and image %, etc...

Oh SNAP! So Photoshop will act like a control panel for me. That's sweet. All I need is to set it to a decent dpi and SCAN! Then I can do the rest when I get an image in Photoshop.

My grandmother's scanner had a photo editing program that sucked anyway. I always ended up taking the images into Photoshop anyway.

Bitchin. So I got the driver, and now I can use Photoshop to operate the scanner.

Now all I have to do is actually plug the thing in the wall and see if it turns on, then plug it into a serial port on my comp. Just my luck! I finally have a comp with like 6 USB ports and I get an old scanner with only serial ports.

Son of a BITCH.

I looked into the info on the Scanjet IIc and it says the drivers include the software DeskScan II, which would be the control panel you see when you're in Photoshop and tell it to scan.

Once you're in Photoshop you should be able to go to the File menu and click Import, and from within that sub-menu see the scanner. Clicking on the scanner should launch the control panel for the scanner (the DeskScan software). At least that's the way it appears for me in Photoshop 7, I don't know what version of PS you have, but it should be similar to that.

Moe, I think that you still need scanner drivers to recognize the scanner, even if you're using photoshop.

as stated above, you need a driver to talk to the scanner, and s/w to handle the pic once scanned. Photoshop will do the second part - the first part you need the drivers from HP, or, if you have a MS o/s that's win98 or later it MIGHT recognize it when you plug it in.

fatylvr, go to their website and see if you have the latest drivers. If you've Upd@ted OSes, you will need the driver for that OS.

Well blackbird, my foot is a lot better. My limp is almost completely gone and my foot itches around the area where I was stabbed, so I guess that means it's healing. I've been playing the drums with it and the pain I had last week is almost completely gone this week. So I'm pretty happy about that.

As for my Scanner, I got the software and installed it. Now I am having a problem getting my computer to recognize the scanner. It says something aobut a SCIC card. I don't know what that is.

I have a cord plugged in from the scanner to a small serial port in my comp. And Photoshop recognized that I have a Scanjet II, but when I $elect to import it, I get told it can't recognize my scanner. I'm pretty sure it's a driver problem. I THOUGHT the driver was in that download bundle I got from Hewlett Packard, but maybe it wasn't.

So now it's just sitting there on my floor. It has power and is unlocked. Anyone have anymore ideas?
