What Happened?

I speak to people all day from various parts of New York. I find that if Im speaking to a person from Brooklyn especially or certain areas of Queens that they say "What happened?" if they didnt catch what you said!! It always throws me off because when someone from where I am from says something to me that I didnt hear, I ask .. "What?", or "What did you say?". How is it that an entire area (city/town) uses the same odd phrase when they simply want you to repeat yourself?

I used to get that a lot when I was on the phones as a agent, I'd ask "Okay, can I have your account number?" they'd be doing something and would respond "what happened??", instead of "what was that?". I just wanted to jump through the phone and strangle people sometimes because they were just fucking idiots.

It is another one of those black things. It is also no longer cutting edge kewl to say it.

But the blacks started it. The confusing thing mid-thought was just a bonus to an otherwise juvenile phraseology. And so of course whitey wants to copy, as usual. Which led to the phrase being quickly Dr0pped from the black lexicon. Today it is sharing space with words like "homie", "you go girl", and "up the yin yang".

I never noticed that up there, but in Texas the first time I heard their phrase I was completly lost. Now it just pisses me off. So when the rednecks want something repeated they say 'Do what?' or in their accent 'Dew whaa?' or 'Dew whaa now?' But I'm sure I sound like an ass to them when I say 'you guys' instead of 'ya'll'.

I dont necessarily think its a "black thing" per se, I do notice hispanic girls using it alot and real "`hood" Italian guys in Brooklyn. They dont seem to be aware that they are saying it, it just seems to be a local slang way of saying "What?" which is strange to me because usually slang isshorter not longer or more complicated!
Or am I saying it as slang and they are right??? Hmmmmmmmmmmm
