WASHINGTON - Tom Daschle is coming soon to a blog near you.
The Senate minority leader and South Dakota Democrat will post a daily diary on his official Web site as he drives around the state next month during Congress' annual August recess, he said Wednesday. The diary is modeled on the growing phenomenon of the online journals known as Weblogs, or blogs for short.
"At the end of the day, wherever I am, I can just type up some thoughts and tell stories about things that happened," Daschle said. "I'm always up for trying something new."
For years, Daschle has made a point of visiting all of South Dakota's 66 counties annually, stopping in most of them during August. The senator drives through towns and chats with constituents, Dr0pping by county courthouses, grocery stores and steakhouses.
This year, Daschle - who is up for re-election next year - has decided to focus his tour on health care, asking voters to discuss their concerns and ideas to improve medical care in the United States. The tour will kick off Monday in Rapid City.
The blogging idea came from aides, inspired by the growing popularity of the informal journals. Hundreds of thousands of people around the country write blogs, many using free Web-based software. The writing is usually informal and chatty, often linking to other blogs or articles that the authors are interested in.
"My staff told me a while back about a blog," Daschle said. "I learned a new word. ... This new blog concept appealed to me."
The first posting in Daschle's blog - which will be called "Travels with Tom" and will be linked to the front of his official Senate Web site - should go up Thursday, spokesman Dan Pfeiffer said. Aides will post Daschle's entries as he writes them, Pfeiffer said.
"He will be only one who knows his experiences," Pfeiffer said. "He always comes back with stories from these trips. This an opportunity to share those with everyone else."
