How does a trombome work?

I don't mean the question literally, I understand how changing the length of the thingy changes the pitch of the sound. I guess my real question is are there things, like notches or something, inside the slide that tell the player what note he's playing or is it just a case of learning where to stop moving the slide to create the right pitch? If this is the case, I imagine that it must be extremely difficult to learn the instrument. I mean, the slightest mistake in arm position and you're flat or sharp. Sounds extremely frustrating to me.

No, there are no notches or anything inside. The pitch can also be varied with your mouth.

It's not really that difficult; just need to practice - it's the same idea as playing a violin or fretless bass - you just need to practice practice practice until you can play in tune!

I play the tuba, you do basically the same tequnique. You get used to pitches so you know that tightnening your lips will get you a higher pitch, and relaxing your lips gets you a lower pitch. When you're playing you're accually spitting into the instrument. When you play higher notes, you spit more.
