Obesity epidemic: Mere Propaganda?

So is there REALLY an obesity epidemic like everyone believes there to be. You've all seen the news and headlines re: legislation for a fat tax, keeping junk food out of school cafeterias, various research studies regarding the increase in obesity in americans, etc.

But yet on t.v., especially with the age of "reality television", it appears that there are more and more "healthy" people on the tube. So who am I supposed to believe? If reality television is supposed to be a cross representation of the current society, where are the obese people at? They're not in any of the "work-out" commercials, they seem to be all fit. They're not on any of the current "reality" shows. They're not on the cover of magizines the newstands.

Sure there are obese people out there, but not in the vast proportions that the media make them out to be. And to compare standards of obesity to past generations seems to be off-base due to changes in society and culture. So why are we being misled?


An aside from all this....Do all athletes, movie/t.v./music stars have beautiful/handsome spouses/significant others?

OK, TV executives like pretty people, and America likes watching pretty people. It doesn't matter how few you see on TV, because even "reality" shows have screenings and tryouts, and odds are they never want more than one or two fat people, if that. They just aren't stereotypically "pretty" and people usually don't like them except as comedy relief.

Meanwhile, go to the local mall or restaurant or ANYWHERE in public. Look at the fatties galor. Fat as far as the eye can see. Hell, if I didn't work my ass off, I'd probably be fat, too.

15% of 6-19 year olds are classified as verweight. This number has tripled in the last 20 years.

The American Public Health Association did a study of Californians; and from their findings, as also reported by the CDC:

59% of Californian adults are overweight or obese

27% of Californians reported getting no physical activity

My husband was in California for about three weeks a littl ewhile back; he came home and reported that he did not understand why California was supposedly home to "The Beautiful People," because he never saw so many overweight--and "supersized" people in his life.

Yes, we don't just have overweight people any more. We have so many overweight people in america, we had to come up with a term to describe the ones we once thought would only be seen trucked around on a slab on The Jerry Springer Show: Supersized.

There is a growing market for items such as clothing sized 10X and up (that's XXXXXXXXXXL size) and items such as "extenders" so that supersized folks can do things like reach to wipe their own rear ends & wash. you attach the toilet paper or a sponge to the enxtender, and wipe your behind with it, if you can nolonger reach uyour own crack.
