View Full Version : Take Out Tipping

A while ago Ron and Fezzy were talking about tipping in restaurants. I always tip well when dining in a place where I'm waited on.
I was wondering what do you guys do when you call ahead and order Take out food and pick it up at the restaurant, pay with a credit card and they have that tip area on the receipt?
When I pay cash I don't tip (for carry out) since I'm not being served and that's what I tip the wait staff for.
What do you guys do?

[color=purple]I tip, usually a dollar or two (depending on the complexity of the order). Even when it's to-go, those orders don't just put themselves together.

I generally take whatever the tax is, and double it. So if the tax is $3, I give the server $6.

take out I tip nothing. It'd be the same as tipping a guy at McDonald's.

I agree. These people are on a salary or an hourly wage. It's not as if they were making below minimum wage and living off tips as a waiter or waitress would be.

Whoops, I misread this topic, for takeout maybe a dollar or two if it's being delivered. If I'm going to the place to pick up a take out order though, I don't tip.

I didn't want to get into a "Mr Pink" discussion. Lets say for those of you who would tip if being served in the same resturant, would you tip if you were just picking up the food.
I personally feel the price you pay for the food itself (the amount on the menu) is the price for the food. Many place automatically add a gratuity to the bill for larger parties (Like 6 or more) but when they don't I do tip for the service.
I bring this up because I use my Visa Check card for take out and they usually use the same credit card machine as the Waiters use so that "Add Tip here" area is there.

Yea, I give a reduced tip. Same thing at the walk up counter at a diner for instance. They're only walking a short distance and not giving you water or utensils, but they are getting it all together for you so they deserve something.

[color=purple]You can't compare take-out from a real restaurant to that of a fast food drive-thru. The people working at McDonals are paid a hourly wage, albeit the minumum wage, and a big part part of their job description is handing out take-out orders.
But at places like Chilis or RedLobster, the bartender or waitstaff has to get your order together. These people work primarily on tips.
Obviously, you're not gonna give the the same 15% you would if you were dining in, but I can't see just stiffing them either.

i tip for service provided beyond the price of the food. as in a restaurant, the waiter brings me the food. I don't have to get up and get it myself. so i tip the waiter for the service he's providing. at takeout, I have to go and get the food myself, rather than having a delivery guy bring it. him i'd tip. but if no service, no tip.

Take out, if it's a diner, I'll tip the waitress or waiter that brings it to the counter, because they need tips.
What I will not tip, however, is the paper cup with "tips" scribbled on it that you find in Dunkin Donuts, Subway, etc.

If I go to the place and pick it up myself, I don't tip. If I have it delivered to my house, I usually give the guy $2 (more depending on the weather).

I never tip when picking up food that was ordered "to go". And I do not believe that this is wrong.
If it is a delivery, then obviously a tip is in order for the delivery person. How much? A fiver. No more.
There are two sushi places near me. One is less expensive, is take-out only, has less depth to the menu, and the no-frills sushi is not the main attraction. I never tip here.
The other is closer, more expensive and upscale, has many variations of sushi to choose from, and is primarily a restaurant, although a lot of business is take-out as well. I only tip here when dining in. And they are so expensive as it is.
But when sitting at a sushi bar, not only are you expected to tip the waitress, you should tip the chef. If you have a rapport with the chef, he often will make you some special things, free of charge, and be very liberal when tallying up the total at the end (giving you like a 6 for the price of 5 deal), just because he likes you.
Also, Sapporo is loads better than Asahi.

I tip only with meals that are served. I dont tip for takeout... all the guy is doing is pressing the buttons on the cash register and handling the money. The cooks deserve it more.
If I'm at a resturant, I usually double the tax, but if the meal was complecated, and it's been a long night, and service has been fast, they get a lil extra.
At a bar, i'd probably tip about a dollar for a simple drink, and more for a mixed.

I feel better now. I don't tip for carry out, but I still feel funny not writing something in that tip area on the credit card recept when I pick the food up. I should just stop by the ATM and get cash so I can stop thinking about it.
Thanks everyone!

What about when you go to a place like Outback and they bring the food out to your car? I always tip a few bucks then. But what the fuck am I doing at Outback in the first place? I might as well just eat a shit brick to cut to the chase.

So to walk inside and pick it up myself is literally no more than ten feet. If I did that I SHOULDN'T tip them? You're saying ten feet of carrying a bag IS somehow more worthy of tipping than having everything done and prepped for you inside, except I just open the door and grab the bag myself?

yes. you've already paid for the food to be prepared, wrapped, and prepped. that's built into the cost of the food. having someone bring it to you, wither it be at a takeout counter, or at the table in a restaurant is extra.

Yes. You also have to throw out the styrofoam container that takes up so much room in your garbage can thus then making impossible to fit anything else in the can so then you have to walk another 10 or 15 feet to the outdoor garbage to get rid of the garbage bag. You end up wasting a whole garbage bag on the togo containers which is like 10 cents or something. It's a whole process, really.
Not to mention if you use your own fork and knife that at some point you have to wash them putting even more time into this whole take out experience.
For all that work I deserve a god damn tip!

But the server had to walk the bag from the kitchen to the take out area, which is probably 2 or 3 times as long as the ten feet to my car. How come those thirty feet don't count? Technically, they could have just left it sitting outside the kitchen if that's all I'm paying for.
