Not to be a killjoy, but that's a dolphin in the first one.

But yes, I hate going swimming in the ocean. How does the quote go? "Once man enters the ocean, he enters the food chain."

Damn skippy. I done learned mah lesson from "Shark Week".

How does the quote go?

"You go in the cage, cage goes in the water, you go in the water. Shark's in the water, our shark!"

Speaking of shark week, it's starts Sunday night on Discovery Channel. I'm pumped to see the shark expert get bit on camera.

I'll lay on the beach all day but I'll only go in up to my knees or so to cool off and only if it's clear enough to see my feet under water.

i just went to sharkattacks.com and it was not pretty...

i'll go in the ocean and go in a little above my waist level BUT am always looking down and around. i am also always planning what i'm gonna do in case i see one heading towards me or if it's grabbing someone next to me...

hopefully the dump i take in my shorts will ward him off...

True. The horizontal tail gives it away sadly.

And if I was the surfer, that news would be quite welcome!

I just came back from a week of camping on the beach. On wednesday we watched a few different groups of dolphins riding waves almost onto the beach. Watching them jumping out of and in front of the waves was absolutely amazing.

I like how it says "Sharks are the Real victims" and it shows all these mangled corpes on the site.

I don't have a fear of sharks as much as an intense disliking.

Truly, they are the assholes of the sea.

Well, that, and seeing a 10+ foot tiger shark about 20 feet away from me when I was seven really made me think the ocean wasn't the place for me.

Well, I'm guessing you all know that the inspiration for the book and movie 'Jaws' was a real series of fatal shark attacks that occurred here, at the NJ shore, in the early part of last century?

yep. the history channel has run the documentary on those attacks many times. they never actually caught that shark, right? or did they...

Nope.

Of course, when you have guys hunting it by basically firing guns blindly and setting off dynamite in any body of water they see, things kinda have trouble working out that way. Didn't it eat a couple kids and a dog in addition to the other three or four it got?

Reseachers can only best conclude that it was a "rogue" shark...or even more bluntly, an insane shark. It was literally thousands of miles from where it should have been living and taking huge risks to attack prey that probably wouldn't feed it sufficiently, and then STILL attacking people after it had gotten a big meal. So essentially it was a serial killer shark.

Some sharks can actually live in both freshwater AND saltwater, so they swim up rivers like the Mississippi from time to time. I think the bull shark is one of them, and that's part of the "big five" that are most likely to snack on us...

Assholes.

Ya know, what if it the sharks were really loving creatures, but then Spielberg made JAWS and the shark community was like "oh shit, now we gotta live up to that."

So sharks can "breathe" in saltwater and freshwater.

The "Air Jaws" TV specials have shown even the largest great white sharks leaping a good ten feet into the air.

The next natural evolutonary step?

Air-breathing, flying sharks.

We're doomed.

Ya know, what if it the sharks were really loving creatures, but then Spielberg made JAWS and the shark community was like "oh shit, now we gotta live up to that."

if they saw the animatronics that went into the movie, they probably would've just laughed their asses off. (not badmouthing the movie in any way. just, compared to todays effects, and the fact that Jaws' tail only moved once throughout the entire movie, they would've laughed at the fact that we feared sharks cuz of that.)

if they did think that they had to live with up to the fact though, i imagine a shark wishing the be the king of all the sharks out there. and seeing the final scene in the movie when Jaws destroys the boat, I imagine a tiny shark trying to attack the QE II just to get that glory as "King of the Sharks".

Anyway, that rogue shark that attacked people back in the early 20th century was something to really fear. It seemed to go "coastal", instead of "postal".
