Where does the phrase "digging for China" originate from? I did a google search and really found some irrelevant info.

Do you mean like digging a hole in the ground deep enough to make it all the way to China?

Or is this more of an archeological dig for china, as in the plates and tableware kind've thing?

It comes from the Civil War.
Invading armies knew that folks would bury their valuables at the approach of enemy troops, who would try to loot the fine china and silverware and stuff.
