Can someone explain the point of it?

I had always thought that the people freezing themselves had cancer or something and were freezing themselves until a cure was found. Butt then today I was reading an article that Ted Williams body was decapitated and his head was seperated from his body and both were frozen. Whats the point of that?

Article on Williams for you sports fans (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20030812/ap_on_sp_ba_ne/bbo_ted_williams_body)

Butt

huh huh huh...you said BUTT.

Anyway, I think people who want to be cryogenically frozen are weirdos. They are probably afraid to die or be dead, considering that we have no idea what dying feels like. Usually its either people that want to be brought back alive someday or just want to see how the future is going to be like.

I think they're all loony.

Makin' my own sigs cuz I'm still unknown on this site and too lazy to ask anyone else to make them for me.

Probably because they wanted to keep his brain seperate in a different climate controled area.

ok...

Some people wanna live forever. Some want long lost relatives back. Some want an infant taken from them brought back to life. All of this is quite understandable. And all quite impossible.

I will lump cryogenics and cloning here. Whether the cell is right off a living body or from one frozen 10 years ago, it goes like this...

HOW TO CLONE

An Egg is taken from a woman. This contains the womans chromosomes; half of the 46 your body cells have. Instead of a sperm penetrating this egg, adding its half of the chormos and depositing and becoming a baby...

INSTEAD...

Cloning procedure = removing the
nucleus of the egg taken from a woman and
replacing it with the nucleus of an adult cell, or whatever you wish to clone. The egg is placed in the female, hopefully implants; resets the developmental clock of the adult cell back to its embryonic state and gives rise to a new organism that is genetically identical to the donor adult.

Sort of. This is where the trouble begins...

1. It's not going to be geneticaly identical. Even identical twins dont have 100% the same DNA. Radiation, chemicals and many many other things cause small changes in your DNA all the time. Most is harmless. The DNA is very very very close, but not 100% identical.

2. Thats just the 'nature' part. The 'nurture' part now comes into play. The health of the woman carrying the clone, what she eats and drinks, etc come into play. Basically the egg is being fed whatever the Woman is, and this will be different from the development of the thing/person you're trying to clone. More changes possible/likely.

3. It's born. Now what? This clone will be in a different environment, eat different things, catch different diseases at different times, have different injuries. It's early stimulus from the 5+ senses will be different, all while the brain continues to develop speech, language, recognition, and the 1000s of intangibles No One can measure that we call 'personality'. As to the 'soul' issue; I punt.

This is horribly simplified and skips many many things, like the real barriers to human cloning [mostly, the cell has so many problems dividing correctly that it...doesnt.].

POINT:

Anyone who thinks Ted Williams the human who hit .400 is stored in his DNA is living a fantasy sold to them by those who sell this service.

A Ted Williams cell is not Ted Williams the Human, and it Will Not become the Ted Williams that it came from.
