Oh man I get so depressed...
I got to see Van Halen on the 'Diver Down' and '1984' tours.
I can not impress upon you the intensity of Van Halen in Top Form. They had really peaked by then actually, and yes DLR would do a lot of bullshit antics, but on that Diver Down Tour, they were still pretty hungry.
Tough to describe in words, but when VH1 came out; Everything about rock guitar changed. I mean metal wasnt like this. DLR always said the best rock songs are the ones you can dance to, and sheesh; theyre could right a great song.
And then there was EVH. When VH1 came out; and people heard the instrumental 'Eruption' they thought a lot of it was manipulating tape or using guitar synthesizer effects. The Floyd Rose was brand new stuff, and here comes Eddie, two handed-tapping, and dive bombing the strings a full fucking octave down. It was insane. It was all very New. And 'new' isnt a term often associate with metal.
And for christ's sake, here were heavy metal guys wearing capezios, parachute pants, and loud bright colors, and Eddie throwing in Pinstriping his guitars. And if that sounds like real bad taste, within a year everyone else was doing it.
I won't even go into what happened to VH, they were great, they sucked, DLR is arguably both the best and worst frontman/singer of a metal band, and this is all just my opinion so flame away, but first...
Get the 'Fair Warning' CD and crank 'Mean Streets' or hell, throw in Hot for Teacher, another song most bands only Wish they had the chops to play.
Sigh...

Fair Warning is in my top 10 albums of all time.
this thing could still pass as a kick ass cd if it came out yesterday..
Van Halen made more money and had more commercial success with sammy.. But now they are a joke...
Daves out to lunch. his videos are still a blast to watch.
rock em out .

I also went to a 1984 concert. By that album, they had already introduced the keyboard/synthesiser, in my opinion they already had begun going downhill with that album, veering greatly from their distinction as a guitar band. Certainly, when DLR left the band, it was never longer an incarnation that captured the magic up until that point.
I don't know why you choose to classify them as a metal band, which they were never.
Speed-wise, Eddie is/was the fastest most accurate guitar player, and finesse-wise Clapton is/was the most eloquent and tonal.

Interesting Trivia Note: they were called "Van Halen" because "Van Heflin" was allready taken.

Interestingly enough, Van Morrison came about much the same way, Van Mefrison was already "taken".
