My Guess from the behaviour of the grids:

This is Very similar to the NorthEast blackout of 1977; caused by a relay you could hold in your hand...

Long story short: A relay senses an overload, and trips, so as not to let the overload fry the electricity of a given grid. The system tries to dump this seeming [or real] overload onto another grid, so it does what its supposed to do, it dumps its power [so that grid goes out] to another grid which dumps, etc domino effect...next thing, before anyone can react the grids all over have taken themselves offline.

They keep mentioning canada. If you didnt know, NY City gets most/much of its power from the Adam Beck stations which use the power of Niagara Falls Ontario Canada [I swear!] to generate electricity. A single relay failed in November of 1965.

Minutes later; much of the Northeast was dark.

We live in a Technology Trap.

Wow...the footage they showed of the Manhattan at dusk (about 15 minutes of daylight left) across the Hudson River is pretty amazing; not a light on.

Any thought that since this may have originated in Niagra Falls that maybe Fezzie's fiance had something to do with it? Did he bother to tell her he's no longer in New York?

They were able to 100% off of the subways; they say that once power comes back to the city, it will take them about 6-8 hours to power it back up. It doesn't sound like any major medical issues.

They are now walking the entire route (!) to make sure there is no one left down there. Now THAT would be a good spooky movie!!

Imagine how unbeleivably uncomfortable it must've been to be on the subway during this! I'm not even clostrophobic or anything like that, but seriously... complete darkness, heat, underground, surrounded by strangers... I'd SHIT myself. It's also pretty wild looking out my window, and all i can see is a couple of candles in people's windows. That's IT.

Can't say it enough: NYPD, FDNY, EMS, local government, the people of NY... amazing job. We've learned a lot since 9/11. We come together like no one else... When this whole thing is over, casualties will probably be very low as well as crime/looting. Impressive.

I spent 6 hours with no power with my siblings, with nothing but a battery powered radio... if the blackout had lasted any longer we would have murdered each other. 4 hours into it my sister was beating my brother over the head with a book, I think violence was our only entertainment.

i live in secaucus and we got our power back at around 4:45. we even got cable back and everything. but around 9 or so the cable went back out, so the only thing i could watch were channels 2 and 4.

when it first happened, i thought the construction workers across the street fucked something up with the power lines and i was about to go out and yell at them. but, alas, it was the canadians who were to blame.

anyway, was anyone watching channel 4 last night and see that one chick who was doing a cheer for the power to come back on? how much of a DUMBASS do you have to be to do something like that? oy...that was the only thing that made me cringe during this whole event.

That was a little scary. power goes out. don't come back on, radio all mest up. Few anxious minutes there. 21 hours later power comes on. We'll hopelfully joke about this in 10 years. not now yet.

Im sure like everyone else, I thought it may have been terrorism. The second I got home I gathered all my emergency supplies, and then went out to the store, bought 6 bags of ice, and 6 gallons of water. All in all this power outage was a big pain in the ass. No cell phones, no TV, some radio, and most important NO INTERNET! Allthough I had AIM on my phone but I doubt I would be getting any IMs from anyone!

if anyone is watching the news right now you know what i mean when i say HOLY SHIT, if you dont have it on, look now. Its a live picture of peopler in new york waiting to take the ferry, AND ITS FUCKING INCREDIBLE.

I was in that mess. I bolted with a friend after people started getting angry and multiple collapses from the heat. I thought there was going to be a major stampede.

But, it was fun as hell to playing Snake Pliskin the rest of the night. Times Square and 42nd St. in the dark was surreal.
