View Full Version : What did you do during the blackout?

Well the power was out for about 17 hours over here. First thing i did when the power went out was turned on a radio to accompany me while i went to check the breakers. Of course I heard that power was out in Cleveland, Detriot, Toronto etc and I decided it wasnt just my house. When I heard all these citties were out I thought terrorism was as likely a culprit as anything else and my first instinct was to grab a kinife and stab an Arab in the heart, but soon after this, they ruled terrorism out. So, i took a quick shower and went outsidewith my radio and sat with my nieghbor out in front of his place. I actually ventured out for ice about 45 minutes after the blackout hit, but the lines were outside the friggin doors already! fuck that. So anyway nightfall was upon us and i listened to the Yankee game and drank alot of beer. Then I went in my tent and fell asleep I woke up at 5:30 with a chill so i came inside, and a radio woke me up at 7 when the power came back on.

Mmmmmmm, let's see.........I played my electric guitar while watching TV, cruised the internet on my computer while sitting in my air conditioned home..............there was a power shortage ??
Seriously, most of the Jersey shore was spared. All I had was a 1 second outage when it first happened that tripped my circut breaker, and all I had to do was reset. I watched TV all night and marveled at how well the people coped with this, and hoped for the best for all those people stuck in elevators and subway cars.

Given the choice between sitting around and talking to my family like they did back in Pioneer days or sleeping, I chose sleep. I did get to make a bitchin' oregon trail joke, but alas only my brother got it. My comedy was wasted!
We couldn't even make dinner last night cause someone in my house thought having an electric stove and oven was a "super sweet" idea. Asshat!
We got powerback at 1245 am and I was forced to come back into work this morning. Feh!

There was a lunch-in thing at a firehouse after my uncles funeral( :( ) when the blackout hit Jersey but the power didnt go out there. When my family left that we went to my aunts who didnt have power so I went in the pool and played with my 2 year old cousin.
When my family got home at like 9 we saw all the alarm clocks were blinking with the time "5:07", so im guessing my town only lost power for a lil bit.

[color=purple]Drove around town with a couple of friends, the city was absolutely awesome last night. Probably my favorite stop was Washington Square Park, where we spent some time hanging out with all the other freaks.
The scene was one I'll never forget. People playing guitars in the middle of the night, me and another guy starting impromptu sing-alongs. Candles everywhere, girls dancing and doing the hula-hoop. Everybody just having a kick ass time. It was like the world's funkiest block party. They should black out the city once a week.
<marquee><b>Now let's see what some of the critics are saying about GaryWyze... Ron Bennington, one 1/2 of the radio duo Ron & Fez, <u>"Gary Wyze is a funny, funny comedian"</u> ... IrishAlkey, one 1/2 of the drunken sex duo Alkey & Silera: <u>"Gary = God"</u> ... Rory Hampton, former radio producer and well know Aryan: <u>"GaryWyze IS the Godfather!"</u> ... Chairman Kaga, Chairman of the RF.NET Message Board: <u>"Gary is hysterical, absolutely hilarious, he truly is The Don</u> ... EastSideDave: <u>"Forget Jesus, GaryWyze is my Savior"</u> ... Winnie Copper, best female vocalist of the entire RF.NET Message Board: <u>Gary is a total genius, call me a Garyite, I am converting to Garyism"</u></b></marquee>

Watch t.v. and turn on the lights to the envy of my neighbors who had no electricity. They busted out the small grill and barbequed food.
Later when I walked my dog I got a flashlight cuz the rest of the neighborhood was pitch black. Oh, an check out Ron Fez.net.

I sat around in the blaring heat outside. Then I got out the flashlights and solar powered lanterns when it got dark. I also sat outside looking at the stars. At about 10 my mom went to get my dad from queens (he was walking for hours from midtown) and I STILL sat around, this time inside. My sister got her laptop out and hooked it up to the phoneline and used an AOL demo, so I was online for a few minutes. At about 11, I played a little cards with my family, then at 12 I turned on the radio and layed in my bed. at 12:30, to my surprise, I heard my neighbor's central air start up, and I noticed my halway was lit... and sure enough... we got power. I turned on the light and the tv and watched until two, when I decided I've had enough of this heat, and I went to bed.

Yeah, five years ago. Today's my son's birthday and we spent the early evening looking for a place selling ice cream cakes. We lucked out as there was one down the street from the house that was looking to just the rid of them so we got one for $5. Of course, we couldn't eat it until my wife got home from Manhattan. It was a little melted.

I was just past the very edge of the blackout. I lived on the Quebec side of the river in ottawa and we're not on the Ohio/NY/Ontario grid, we had quebec hydro. I worked 5 minutes away in downtown ottawa where they also lost power.
I didn't have to go to work for a week, I got paid, and I had full power and AC at home the whole time.
I sat on my lawn drinking, listening to music with the AC unit blowing nice cold air in my face as all the sweaty ottawa refugees walked past my place going to the store to buy ice.
We chanted "Joyeux Fin du Monde!" to the refugees who were jealous of my abundant electricity.
It was the best week of my life.

I walked 15 miles from wall street to the north bronx. It took 10 hours and I had blisters not only from my very uncomfortable work shoes but also halfway to my knees because of my socks. I had $1 in my pocket and all the ATMs were useless. My cell phone died. My family was on vacation and couldn't help me. I saw looting in Washington Heights. When I finally got home I had to walk up five flights of stairs to my apartment in pitch black.
... it was a bad day.

My husband and his brother were working in NYC at the time. They were both in publishing. I was listening to O&A and watching CCN. Hubby called me from his office that was in the middle of the office. My A/C , TV and PC was off and on. I finally had the TV come back on. I told him about a shortage. They hitched hiked outside of the tunnel. A couple picked them up and drove them to Giant Stadium where bro in laws car was parked. Hubby and bro in and the lights came on.

woo hoo!
I had just gotten home from "Sergeant School" to find the elevator out.
I thought it was just my building, and climbed the 6 flights.
I played scrabble by candlelight with my neighbor and his mom.
The next day, they sent my whole class down to patrol Bed Stuy
and of course we all got in on the Overtime.
Cool thing was, unlike the rest of my class, I was already promoted to sergeant,
so my classmates ended up being my first roster as a boss.
Oh yeah, thats also the day I found out some guy sent me white powder at my former precinct in the Bronx, hoping I'd think it was anthrax. My partner called me while I was in Bed Stuy and told me there was an envelope for me with no return address. I told him to open it for me, I still can hear the hesitation in his voice....uh...Chris...there's white powder in here....
GOOD TIMES!

I was on the phone with a Friend in Detroit who said...my lights just went out and the last thing she herd before my work phone crashed was...move out of that hood and come back to NYC where the lights never go out.
I left my office in Parkchester (Bronx) and Walked to my brothers Apt in Soundview(Bronx) and spoke to people I havent seen in years because my brother lived on the 19th floor...nothing like walking 19 flights in the dark.
His lights came on about 7ish so he drove me back to Yonkers where I assumed I would get my lights back any second now. Wait for it...
Wait for it........
I waited till 6pm the next day....
Thank fully my apt in Yonkers was only 7 floors up and has a deck. I drank all the beer I had with my neighbor who added a couple.
It sure was an experiance.

Spent hours in traffic, ate a PB&J sammich because we couldn't cook. Drank the beer out of our fridge and invited a friend over to play boardgames until the power came back on at 11pm. We were able to watch the news until bed time at that point.
