Energy conservation today? Not me, no way.

I don't give a crap about whatever They are saying about how we have to conserve energy today. Not me. I am not only going to go about my regular business, I am going to do whatever I can to use a lot of electricity today and every day.

It is my electricity, I pay through the nose for it, they charge exorbitant rates for it. And I am damn well going to turn it up. It is bad enough that my electricity was shut down yesterday for 6 1/2 hours, they are all goddamn lucky that the food in my freezer stayed rock solid frozen, and that is only because I did not open it like a dummy the whole time.

Same thing with the lies about the water. They decide that we have a drought, and I should conserve. Too bad, not me, I turn it up whenever they say to conserve. It is my water, they charge way too much for it, and I will damn well use it all up. They say they will somehow clean the sewage to make it into drinking water, like this will scare me. Then inevitably it rains, and the reservoirs are filled and overflowing.

Instead of spending all of My Money preparing to make me drink sewage, how about building the walls of all the reservoirs 1000 feet higher, so that when it rains for 200 days in a row this year, we can save more water to use, instead of feeding us sewage for billions.

Right now I will go around the house and turn on all the electrical appliances, I dare them to shut me off again, I do not need to participate in their propaganda hoax, especially since the huge big money companies are the ones that they allow and encourage to keep their power on 100%, No Way, not at my expense, I am turning it up.

I don't buy into any of this "power surge" propaganda either. Listen, I have everything going right now full speed, the toaster oven is fully operational with a baked potato cut in half stuffed with mozarella and avocado, Sinatra is cranking at volume eleven, the thermostat reads 67 and is headed south, the lights and lamps are brightly lit in every room, I am vacuuming one spot at a time changing the position of the vacuum cleaner every half hour, every outlet has a three-outlet extension plugged into it, with more wires coming out of those, I am using my can opener to open every can in the house, and I just to be radical I have the blow dryer on and placed in the tub and turned on the water as it is slowly filling up.

Car horns should only be used in emergencies. I have never used my car horn, since the age of 19. Let people live. If there is a person in front of me who has not noticed that the light has turned green, I just sit and wait. I enjoy the extra 10 seconds to do nothing. And if the person behind me gets antsy at the person in front of me, I purposely do not move my car. Even when the other person in front of me finally starts to go, I stay right where I am. What does the person behind me think, I should just plow right through the car in front of me. No, you need to learn a lesson. You need to wait your turn. Just before the yellow turns to red, Then I will go and let's see if you just get left behind again, you horn-user you. And if you squeak by the light, you are still behind me at the next light. If you try to swerve in front of me I will just block you or open my car door very quickly as an additional obstacle. If it is night and you put on your brights, I will stop in the middle of the road until you calm down and come to your senses. If I see you make any move to exit your vehicle and rush me, I will slowly inch forward so that you are further and further away from your car chasing me on foot. If you continue to use your brights on me, I will drive slowly so that you will pass me, and then I will be behind you and turn my brights on and off as I chase you for miles and drive dangerously close to you while you quickly recognize that I may just be out of control and will stop at nothing.

Fluffie, there is no "shock", I am very serious about the electricity, the water, and the car horns.

I do not need the authorities to dictate to me how I can use my electricity, water, and car horn, when all the major corporations are allowed to run rampant.

And I pay for the electricity! A lot! It is mine to use. I am not advocating opening fire hydrants, I am just saying that you can use whatever is yours. If you want to sit in the dark and heat today and keep all your appliances off, that is your own decision.

Not me. I do not believe that my usage will affect anything at all, and I will not be inconvenienced any more than the 6 1/2 hours they already shut me off for. And I better not be charged for the time that it was off.

Maybe you should consider fasting today also, since there are people in the world that have no food, maybe you can share their pain also.

Here is the answer for you: Whatever you call "shocking" I guess really means "other people's viewpoints". If this is the way you handle differing thoughts other than your own, I in no way want to upset that little order. But as the great Al Doogs once said, "This is not a bit", life is life, knowledgeie, and it is high time you recognize that not everyone will agree with you.

I am now making pizza in the oven, and I am onto my 3rd load of laundry for the day, and the dishwasher is on the rinse cycle, and I have opened and closed the garage door many times so that the thermostat can kick in and make it cooler, it is now 66 degrees and very comfortable.

Building the walls around the reservoirs 1000 feet higher than they are will fix the water problem. If the topography is not convenient for certain reservoirs, then they need to be dug 1000 feet deeper - this will take approximately 2 to 3 weeks per reservoir to get done. Problem solved.

The rate they charge is unfortunately out of my control, it will always be exorbitant, and there is nothing I can do to change it. Today the issue is usage vs. conservation. If they say that they want us to cut back our usage (thereby according to your valid logic, they will earn less money today), that means that to be against them, we Should Use More Electricity today, now more than ever before.

Again - you are right - on the basis of less usage = less billing = less profit for the companies, Why would they want us to use LESS?

Answer: There is something going on here that makes them tell me they want me to use less, but in reality, if I use More #1) I pay for it anyway, it is my electricity and I can use it as I see fit, no one can stop me #2) It will cause the problem to be fixed, just like the water problem contrived to make them more money, just like the claim this week that Americans/New Yorkers are obese (I say, keep on eating) #3) The more resistant you are to do anything contrary to what they have told you to do, the more they have Won, they have Convinced you, big-time.

That is exactly what I am trying to tell you - they make a ton of money by NOT turning it on. They create extra energy, with no demand (since they squelched the demand at their own discretion $electively), and then their supply increases thereby making it a less expensive cost sold to us at the same price - even in fact at a HIGHER price, because I will bet you dollars to doughnuts that very soon they will implement a surcharge, or just plain RAISE the rates, claiming that this is needed to fix the problem, improve the "infrastructure", prevent the problem from happening again, etc. blah blah, what lies they come out with.

Bill, you make an interesting argument, but the fact is I understand that it will cost me approximately $50 to $70 more this month due to the extra electrical usage, and that is a price I AM WILLING to pay for making my point. It is my electricity, and when I use it, I pay, I understand that. Please recognize that if everyone would do the same thing, at the same time, the electric companies would realize that they now need to take notice.

Birdie, you missed the point that the person behind me used their car horn to beep me, when it was the person in front of me that was still stopped for a few moments after the light turned green. The person behind me needed to be taught a lesson in patience and kindness, and so if you make those missles I would like to buy some that are pointed backwards, and instead of paint contain little notes that flutter all over the person's car that read "Love".

You know what, I posted in this thread twice. Before I continue, for the record, I am NOT a regular poster on this board, I am a regular reader, that's just because I am a poster on wackbag.com.

I dealt with the blackout in my town all night on Thursday. I got lucky and only had to deal with it for a hour, but I have alot of friends who dealt with it for longer than your precious 6 1/2 hours. I have friends who lost power from 12-15 hours, including a couple of businesses that had to close early.

You want an actual discussion about this, fine let's have a REAL discussion. No name calling, no nothing. (But I would like to note that "Fattie" is the oldest gag in the book, I've heard them all)

Now, let me get this straight, and this is for the electricity rant, not anything else.

#1, will reiterate what alot of people said, you do NOT, and I repeat DO NOT, pay for electricity YOU DO NOT USE. MEANING, if you turned off every light, computer, etc., you will not be paying for it. There is no fixed rate for your electricity, and while I think that one day there will be, right now there isn't. So for your precious 6 1/2 hours, you ARE NOT PAYING FOR THAT. BUT, you will be paying up the ass for all the stuff you turned on the next day.

#2, you realize that, as I said before, there are people who had their power out for longer than the 6 1/2 hours that you had to deal with. People in New York who didn't have power till mid-Friday morning/afternoon. The point of conserving energy on Friday was to help out the people who DIDN'T have ANY power AT ALL, so that they could get their power back faster.

Finally, and this one I find funny. I went out on Friday after I posted on here, went up to my girlfriend for the weekend, and then came back about a hour ago and saw this conversation was going on, two days later. Why??? I don't get it.

Okay that's it from me. I'm done with this discussion, just wanted to get that out.

To respond to your points: #1, what you fail to realize is that I am on budget billing, which means I pay the same amount per month, regardless of usage. And twice per year the monthly amount is "reevaluated" and wouldn't you know it always goes UP, strangely enough (this is the most profitable thing for them, no). So don't be so quick to think that you are right. I called them on Friday and finally got through, I had to wait on hold for a long time, but I put it on speakerphone, but I was able to speak to a representative and told them I will in no way be paying for the time that my service was down, and the representative noted my account.

#2, You are not looking at the big picture here. For every minute that there was no service, the energy companies were in fact doing all the conserving necessary, big-time. Stop and think for a minute: Do you know how much money they saved every minute that they did not provide electricity to 50 million people? And by Friday mid-day it was still out to about 26 million. After about 15 minutes on Thursday afternoon, there was absolutely no need to conserve any power, it was a moot point.

From that point forward, the best message to send them was to turn all the electricity back on. My only regret was that while my power was out, I did not have everything in the on position to give that first big immediate surge (once the power was out, I did not know what was on or off on most of the things, except the light switches which I did leave in the on position).

Also, the reason that this was still a conversation was because 1) people care about electricity 2) the controversy brought out people's feelings pro or con about the issue, and although the mind of the American public tends to move on rather quickly, and forget about something like this, it is important to recognize what happened to cause the power failure last week and to prevent it from happening again.

i tried 4 times to explain that they didnt. they made power, which they paid for, and no one bought therefore profitting none. they dont stop making electricity when that happens, so no money is saved there. Now, yes - I have budget billing, but as I am sure you know, it is based upon their estimate of your usage, so that every month, you either 1) owe them more money than they thought, or else 2) you used less than your budget that month, and they owe you.

I have Never had a month where they owe me.

A "fixed rate" as you say is not true - it is a convenience thing of apying the same thing every month, but every six months I think they reevaluate your usage - mine Always goes up, they Always seem to - surprise - underestimate my usage. And every bill shows you the amount you owe which is the budget amount, and the actual amount you (will) owe, based upon actual usage. It is just that they do not settle up with you until the reevaluation period.

And, again, I will check my bill as soon as I get it for this month, because they better not have charged me during the time I had no electricity. That is that on this point, I cannot make it any more clear, you did not "trip me up" in some convoluted notion of a "lie".

Yes, the reading does determine the usage. But it is electricity we are talking about here, I expect to get a refund for the time we had no electricity, and if they do charge me as if nothing happened, then I will call them up for credit during the period I would have been using it.

For example: If you buy 12 doughnuts, and eat all of them, you got what you paid for. If you instead buy 11 doughnuts (when you normally buy 12), you cannot claim a credit for the doughnut you have not eaten. Doughnuts are optional, they are not a necessity, doughnuts are luxury items.

However - electricity is mine. Let me ask you, if they decide to turn off the service and not to restore the service for 2 weeks, would that be fine with you? Obviously not. But, according to you, the electricity company could say "too bad, you did not get anything, so you are not being charged, that is all we will do for you." (Meanwhile just stop and think for a minute and realize all the billions and billions of dollars they would be saving, ergo, earning as profit without having to service you with electricity during that time. By billions I mean if it were the entire community in which you live, obviously not just your house.) And if that happened, you would have every right to make sure you get a credit for those 2 weeks. So in fact they are charging you for the time you had no electricity, big-time. But electricity is not doughnuts, electricity is a necessity, electricity is not a luxury.

No, I didn't. And I am sure that your point is that there was no electricity, nothing was running, so I owe nothing, they charged me nothing during that period.

Wrong. By not providing electricity, and then turning it back on, they saved money, yet did not lower the rates as a result, and in fact did not issue Anyone a credit for the downed period! And moreover - they announced today (surprise!) that we will now be charged $50 billion for this! As I predicted! You can look at my earlier message where I said this, before today's announcement.

Well, as to electricity...

No one owns it. It is generated, and people pay for it. Anyone is free to buy electricity to use, but no one is entitled to it just because it is there. Many live without electricity. They are owed nothing. They didn't buy anything. There are many other ways of getting electricity then buying it from a utility.

As for the electric companies making money while the power is out; how? They generate electricity, And when the system fails, they arent. They arent making anything, hence nothing is being bought. If they store huge reserves of electricity somewhere to tap, where is this?

As to stating that there is no way to conserve electricity, not to the point of making any real impact. This is exactly what rolling blackouts are. And they happen all the time, to do exactly that conserve. Why must they do this? Because the huge reserves that are made when the grid is down do not exist.

So; the utilities do it all the time.

So do consumers. They can. The amount of energy that has been conserved over the decades due to increased consumer awareness as to how wasteful people can be with electricity is quite amazing. It's easy, and it can slash a person's electricity bill. The timing of AC, heating, and outdoor lighting can slash an electricity bill. The computer models used to show how something as simple as leaving on a single 100 Watt bulb running when it need not be is stunning.

That single light uses 100Watts/hour. Every hour.
2,400 Watt/hrs a day. That's 2.4 Kilowatt-hours. A day. One bulb.

If I want electricity, despite the handful of providers that I can choose from via recent deregulation, I have one phone number to call - my local electric company, who is in business now and forever, mandated as the only game in town.
Many live without electricity. They are owed nothing. They didn't buy anything.
Those that are used to getting no electricity are indeed owed nothing, but using my doughnut analogy above, it is akin to walking into the store each day to purchase zero doughnuts, and therefore when there is one less doughnut available, the loss does not affect that person at all.
There are many other ways of getting electricity then buying it from a utility.
And solar cells are far more efficient, economical, and environmentally-friendly than our current energy production that generates our electricity (with the exception of water and wind power). So, why - if it is indeed cheaper in the short-run and long-run - why does the US government not implement an energy system that relies primarily on solar panels, both community wide and positioned on every residential dwelling? Because of the big bucks that the electric companies want to make, thereby paying off the government, thereby fleecing the individual.
They arent making anything, hence nothing is being bought.
Here is all the proof you need: On a regular day, the electric company says nothing, they make profit. On the days after a huge power failure, the electric company says "please-oh-please cut back a little, everyone pitch in and conserve". Do you mean to tell me that the electric company, in business to make money and profits, is going to advise its customers to do something that will cause them a loss of revenue? No. THey are advising it because AT THAT POINT IN TIME, they make more money by having people conserve, it bolsters their cause to do so. In order to counteract this, obviously the answer is to USE MORE ELECTRICITY. I have said this over and over again here, please read my prior posts on this point.
As to stating that there is no way to conserve electricity, not to the point of making any real impact.
Although apparently speaking of Rush Limbaugh is taboo here, it was he who made that comment directly, so I think this lends credence.

thats a decent point, but its cause they are all together, sorta like run by a governing body to keep electric companies from inflating prices.
Its kinda like sayin you can choose cereal, but you cant choose your municipal law provider and thus pay taxes that suit you. its called a fact of life that you cant do anything about, and if you went to another electric co if you could, the prices would be just about the same

There is A)something you/I/we can do about it and B) the prices would be just about what we want to pay -fair, reasonable for the services provided, and just about MUCH lower than they are now. Especially with solar (& water & wind) "alternative" energy sources.

Rush? Rush the band is great. Rush the radio host? I've been listening to him since day one. He's great. I don't always agree, but...

Anyway, one thing perhaps we all can agree on:

We're about 6% of the world's population; and we use about half of the resources, natural and otherwise, of the earth.

One thing I can do without: The layers and layers of plastic they wrap Everything in. DVDs, Lunchables, Aspirin bottles.

Ah. You get your Aspirin in a Nice Box, open it up, there's the plastic bottle and a piece of fold-out paper with all the info on aspirin [or Viagra or Shit-No-More, or whatever...]. Then there's a plastic seal around the cap. Then you open the bottle, take out the cotton, and look to see the 20 Aspirin bottle you have could hold at least 100.

Now who's fault is it that they have to wrap everything up a zillion times? Well, it's ours, I guess. For every CD/DVD that's ripped off, when assholes fill tylenol with poison, we all suffer. Security tags. Plastic Wrap. It's all oil.

And as to why do we keep using oil even though, as is said here quite correctly, it's unclean and non-renewable? Because it's cheap as hell.

Solar is a fantastic idea. It's not being used enough. Are the oil companies keeping us down? Of course. But as far as effeiciency vs cost, for now, you can't beat oil products like gasoline.

Gasoline is cheaper then bottled water, orange juice, and most sodas, by the gallon. For all the griping at the pumps; people pay more for just about any other liquid.

Solar is free. renewable. Perfect. But until they design a 100% solar car that can go from 0-60mph under 8 seconds, and travel 100s of miles before needing a charge, it's gonna be gas, sadly.

The start-up costs for solar, wind and all the other excellent alternatives are the big block, I'm guessing. Until people/companies/inventors invest the time, money, and energy to really get it going, to replace the mostly oil driven system we have...

We need a Manhattan Project size investment for this. We had a fantastic Fusion Research program going; I've even been to see the Tokamak Fusion Reactor in Princeton; it's the size of a large house, but the funding was basically slashed. Along with the Super-Conducting Super-Collider in Texas, also cancelled, we could learn to control a sustained fusion reaction.

That's a Huge, safe, almost inexhaustable, Power Source. And someday, someone will get it right. And that country will be the new Superpower. Energy-wise, at least.
