Calling Somebody by the Wrong Name

Okay so I was at a party tonight and had about seven beers when it was time to go. So I was saying my goodbyes, said bye to a friend, the host, a couple people I hardly know, then I say bye to a female friend and called her the wrong name.

Mind you she used to be my friends roommate and I called her the person that replaced her name. She walked away all pissed as I tried to apoligize. I just sent her an e-mail saying I was sorry.

This ever happen to anyone else?

The people I work for are Arabs and have funny-weird names and I dont know the name of one of them, so I do the whole "avoid calling her any name at all" gag.

I dont see why that female friend of yours got so pissed you called her the wrong name, it happens y'know.

I bump into people all the time- "Hey mdr55 what's up?"- and I actually conversate with them even though I can't remember their name. I usually just play it off- "It was nice meeting you again, maybe we'll run into each other, later".
But sometimes I call out a name and if it's wrong I just play it off- "Damn, that's right I forgot".
Or just tell them straight out- "I have a bad memory what's your name again."

But, and I'll always remember this (of a missed oppurtunity), a girl called my house and started talking to me (I didn't know who it was), she said stuff like "you know who this is?". I told her straight out I had no idea. She told me to guess. So I called out girls names, "Is this Deidre....Deanna.....Tess...etc?". She said no and agreed to give me hints- "We met at a party. Had food and drinks. etc. I told her I have no idea who it was and pleaded with her to give me her name alas to no avail. She was polite about it and hung up the phone. To this day I never guessed who it was.

If it's a person you've known for some time they will get upset. But with your situation, maybe that girl sorta like you and now she's hurt cuz you couldn't even remember her name. Send flowers, it might help. (and admit "I'm a jerk" for not remembering your name, I'm sorry)(it works for me especially after a fight, they usually fall for it)

I never remember people's names, unless they are people I see regularly. It is not really a slight against someone if you do not remember their name. If I had an enjoyable time with that person, I can recall exactly what we did and relate it to them to show that I care about them and yet I cannot remember their name at the moment, so it is not an issue unless you cannot remember the person at all. That is the point where you are in jeopardy of getting slapped.

but it bugs me when i forget my friend's kid's names...


and especially relatives kids, like my cousins kids that i don't see for a long time. or my Uncle Chesters three sons names, he's actually my grandads brother and he has sons Doug, Davey, and Danny. One of them comes over once a year for a birthday party we throw for my aunt and i give him the usual :"hi, how you doing" and never even try to address him by name until i confirm with another relative which one is he.

to be honest, i think if i somewhat liked him i would've remembered his name by now...
