I was watching Dateline NBC and they were talking about the South Beach Diet. The way they described it sounds very simiar to the Atkins diet. I'm surprised the interviewer didn't raise that question to the person who formulated that diet as a result of reducing heart disease in people. Did anyone else watch this or know how it is different from Atkins diet that was discussed on this board 2 months ago?
thanks.

Wasnt this on ABC? I saw it too. I'd stick with a self made diets, especially since they said that most of these publicised diets dont last.

It was about 8:30 or 9:30 p.m. i'm pretty sure it was NBC cuz it was the same channel I was watching the day before for the blackout information. (which was NBC)

Ahh, network tv programming is crap. I looked it up and we were both right. NBC ran Dateline at 8pm and ABC ran 20/20 at 10pm, both with the same story.

I'd stick with a self made diets, especially since they said that most of these publicised diets dont last.

Except it seems like every single week more and more studies about low-carb diets (this include Atkins, which I guess is more recent than some of the other low-carb diets that have been promoted; see Jeffrey Steingarten's "The Man Who Ate Everything" for an inetersting chapter on a French low-carb diet by a fellow whose name is escaping me ATM...) are coming out that suggest how healthful they are and how they do indeed work.

When I know that the Dean of Harvard Medical School is a huge advocate of Atkins who's gotten a bunch of the medical school faculty to try the diet, I'm willing to give it a shot :)

Has anyone tried Xenical ? A prescription medicine that is supposed to stop your body from absorbing fat. Apparently makes a hell of a mess if you overdue the fats when on it.

Atkins is the greatest diet I have ever come across, its the only diet I've lost 50 lbs. on, so God bless it.

Are there websites that discuss in detail the Atkins diet?

I've been interested in trying it, but I don't know enough about it.

from what I read the author of this book and Atkins were colleagues (sp?). They among others came up with the low carb diet in the late 70's or early 80's but it was refuted at that time. The gist of this book is that certain carbo's affect you differently, and there are a lot of hidden carbo's in things. One of the worst things for you to eat is high fructose corn syrup. It apparently spikes your blood sugar, initiating an insulin reaction. The end result is your blood sugar plummets, and you get hungry. Try reading labels - that stuff is in a LOT of things you might think are healty. The problem with Atkins is everyone just assumes it's all high fat meat. If you read this book, you'd see that he researched why some people get heart disease and get fat while others do not, when they follow the food pyramid. He also stresses modifications to your diet that you can do over the long haul and live with...

That being said, I modified my diet slightly - little or no carbs at breakfast and lunch as often as possible, and smaller carbo portions for dinner. I avoid drinks and foods that have high fructose corn syrup. I Dr0pped 8 pounds in 2 weeks and have kept it off for months. I also try to pay attention to how I feel when I eat certain things. I used to have pancakes or waffles every couple of sundays (alternated with eggs) thinking they were better for me than eggs. Well between all the carbos, and the high fructose cs in the syrup, by noon I was sleepy and cranky. I stopped that practice and notice I feel better on Sundays.

If you don't read the whole book, at least try to download a couple of articles and make some small changes and see how it goes. Pay attention to how you feel an hour after you eat something, and avoid those foods (not eliminate but cut down on) that make you tired or hungrier later on.

seems good in theory, accept who cares who says what. there have been high profile people, im sure including harvard people, who have been wrong. if ou wanna try a diet because you've read about it and seems like it would work for you, fine. but i wouldnt do anything because they said it was ok.
Remember the guy who came up with stacker and the people who brought ephedra to the mainstream didnt seem to be to right, and alot of people tried those products based on people saying how good they were
