I remember renting this thing when it first came out on video, not expecting much. I was so blown away by this film.

I can watch this movie a hundred times and love it. He's better than Leatherface with the chainsaw. (and sneakers)

Good movie but they left out good/ideal parts of the book that you would want to have in there.

******SPOILERS******
LOVED the movie, mainly for Bale's performance, which was criminally not awarded ANYTHING. The movie looks beautiful and is wonderfully paced and directed, but like NIN said, the movie left out so much from the book that it kinds messed up the impact of the ending and made it much more vague for the average watcher. The book Dr0ps hints along the way that the murders are just in Bateman's head, but in the movie it just comes out of NOWHERE, and it kinda fucks everything up. Like a VERY similar movie (In both twist endings, excellent dark humor and a mangled Jared Leto), "Fight Club", the movie has a great twist ending, but unlike "Club", the ending isn't as skillfully foreshadowed. And DaFoe's presence was fucking WASTED in this thing, and that's AWFUL.
Other than that, it's brilliantly hilarious.

***MORE SPOILERS***
Mojo - I disagree. I think Fight Club is an awesome movie, but I can't see why you feel the forshadowing was done more "skillfully". To me, it's quite the opposite. Fight Club gives you very blatent hints at its twist ending, basically to cater to a dumber audience. When they made Fight Club, they wanted everyone to walk out of the theater understanding what had just happened. That's why they even put together a montage segment replaying all the scenes where Jack was interacting with himself (Tyler not present). They wanted to make it very clear what had happened. In fact, I feel the forshadowing was a bit TOO obvious, as half the people I went to see Fight Club with had already figured out the twist before it even happened. You shouldn't be able to predict a plot twist.
American Psycho on the other hand displays several pieces of evidence pointing toward the murders being in his mind, but they aren't even memorable. You need to go back and watch the movie a second time and a third time until you say "Holy shit... that's clever. I didn't even notice that the first time." You have to be the detective in American Psycho. You have to do the work. You have to put together the little hints to draw your own conclusion. When you look closely enough, all the the evidence is there, it's just not shoved in your face as boldly as it is in Fight Club.
As far as Willem DaFoe being wasted in this film, I guess you could say that. He didn't exactly have a strong character role, but then again, his role as the Detective couldn't really be a very powerful one because Patrick's character was the real overwhelming focus of the film. Yes, they could've just got someone else to play the Detective, but it was nice to have DaFoe's name on the bill.

The movie should have had a scene with the RAT, like in the book.

You may think "Club" to be more obvious for a "dumber" audience, but I like what they did more because it's more true to the book. "American Psycho" the book Dr0ps the hints MUCH better and isn't nearly as subjective as the film was. The ending of the book IS suprising, but it "feels" much more natural and ultimately expected. The suddeness of the ending revelation in the film doesn't make it "smarter", at least not for me...it damages the rest of the film because it's SO out of leftfield and basically cheapens and practically negates everything we've seen so far. Sloppy direction/writing. Film school 101.

Such as?
Yes, it's great when a movie suprises you and there things you can look for along the way, but ultimately a film's basic "job" is to tell a story that comes together and makes sense no matter how many crazy twists and turns it's gone on...it's NOT the audience's role to do the thinking FOR the film. That's the unfortunate mark of a flawed script, at least in a direct narrative sense
Don't get me wrong, I love the film...I think the satire is absolutely fantastic and as a whole it's one of the most intelligently funny films I've ever seen. "Fight Club" HAD to be a little more obvious because they've made up an entire character, whereas "Psycho" is simply illustrating the delusions in one character's head. As a writer myself, I could hide that MUCH easier than trying to believably show that two characters were actually one for the entire book/film.
And again, Dafoe's character had more to do in the book. Like the ending, this is something that didn't have be used so poorly since it all already existed so perfectly in the book...hence why it's so frustrating to me.
Either way, I DO love the film. Maybe that's why I criticize those specific aspects so intensely. I want it to be perfect, dammit...
