View Full Version : Why isn't there any Chinese fast food places?

I know that places like Taco Bell and Pizza Hut aren't authentic to the real meals you would get from their respective cultures, but yet they're also good in their own unique way.
With that said, why is it that there isn't any fast food places that make Chinese type food? For instance, if you wanted Mongolian Beef in a wrap, or making sandwhiches that have an Asian type flavor to them. I know that things like breads and cheeses aren't common in the culture but it doesn't mean it couldn't be added to unique types of fast food meals.
Imagine going to a drive through and getting egg rolls, or a rice bowl with chicken and vegtables Chinese food style. Taco Bell makes these Border bowls with rice and chicken, etc. Why not the same approach but with an Asian feel to it.
I'm curious if there's a reasoning for it, is the public not ready for Chinese fast food drive-thru style type meals? Please discuss.

Panda Express (http://www.pandaexpress.com/default.asp)
There's on in the food court of Newport Centre Mall. I'd consider that fast food.

I've seen Panda Express, and it is as close as that comes to fast food for Chinese food, but I'm talking more along the lines of places that have their own stand alone building likes McDonalds or Wendy's and Taco Bell type places have. With drive-thru ordering of Chinese food.

I think the problem making chinese food "fast" lies in the food itself.
Burgers and tacos can be eaten on the go. Can you really eat much besides eggrolls on the go with Chinese food?
All the things I eat when I get chinese need forks. Chicken and Broccoli. Lemon chicken. General Tso's chicken. Pepper Steak. Beef with Snow Peas. Pork fried rice. Wonton soup.
The closest you're gonna get are Chinese buffets. I LOVE the one on Rt. 17 in Ramsey!

I'd like to see come creatively made type of sandwhich or wrap type thing made that has food cooked Asian or Hibachi style, imagine like a wrap with Teriyaki chicken or beef inside, plus whatever else. I mean things like the Chalupa are not authentic Mexican, but were invented for Taco Bell. I would like to some creative chef make up an Asian type meal that can be eaten on the go.

they could just make a larger eggroll casing and stuff it with the different dishes they have:
spicy broccoli eggroll
beef and pepper eggroll
one lo hung eggroll
two in the saki eggroll
etc...

Oh, OK. I misunderstood. You meant you thought with some creative re-packaging Chinese food could be marketed like other fast food. Not a bad idea. I like th Egg Roll wrap idea. I'd dig into a Chicken and Broccoli or Baby corn and snow pea egg roll wrap.
Let's brainstorm some more ideas, pool our money, open a store and get it frachised all over the USA.

I need to find the link or any information but there was this place in the Metro Philly/South Jersey area called China Jump (I think) and they had the drive-thru, food in a flash and this thing called Wokaroni and Cheese whoich was an Egg Roll with Macaroni and Cheese filling., That shit was good and just the best food ever made. Good thing they eventually went out of business cause those W & C's would have clogged my heart quickly.
They had a nice variety of wraps and Chinese Platters too. I have some info on there laying around my flat somewhere, I just have to find it. There was a take out menu I took but besides that, I don't know what else.

I have been to the Master Wok and it was pretty good. I know China Jump went out of business a few years back but it was some good shit. The one I always went to was in Montgomeryville right across from the Mall. There is a Kinko's there now.
This one friend of mine who is a fountain of pointless knowledge will remember everything about this place and I gotta email him about it. In conversation Wokaroni & Cheese will come up and we would always go apeshit about how cool the place was.

So where exactly are you from in the Philly area Fiesty? I grew up there (Perkasie) and remember the Roy's AND the Roy's on the bottom floor of the mall cause we used to play hooky from school there. I wrote my fountain of knowledge friend and I sure hope the Chinese Place wasn't a figment of my imagination cause if it was then I have a lot of explaining to do with what happened with those years that I thought I was eating there.
A year or so ago there was a girl who did the 6:00 Queif at the Mobil across the street and I had many fun times at the Adult World across the street too.
EDIT: I like Pat's but I really like Jim's but I really REALLY LOVE The (former) Philadelphia Pizza Company right underneath Fat Tuesday's on South Street. Their Cheesesteaks RULE! That place also has a mention is this wonderful song:
The Dead Milkmen - Punk Rock Girl
One Saturday I took a walk to Zipperhead
I met a girl there
And she almost knocked me dead
Punk rock girl please look at me
Punk rock girl what do you see?
Let's travel round the world
Just you and me punk rock girl
I tapped her on the shoulder
And said do you have a beau?
She looked at me and smiled
And said she did not know
Punk rock girl give me a chance
Punk rock girl let's go slamdance
We'll dress like Minnie Pearl
Just you and me punk rock girl
We went to the Phillie Pizza Company
And ordered some hot tea
The waitress said "Well no
We only have it iced"
So we jumped up on the table
And shouted "anarchy"
And someone played a Beach Boys song
On the jukebox
It was "California Dreamin'"
So we started screamin'
"On such a winter's day"
She took me to her parents
For a Sunday meal
Her father took one look at me
And he began to squeal
Punk rock girl it makes no sense
Punk rock girl your dad is the Vice President
Rich as the Duke of Earl
Yeah you're for me punk rock girl
We went to a shopping mall
And laughed at all the shoppers
And security guards trailed us
To a record shop
We asked for Mojo Nixon
They said "He don't work here"
We said "If you don't got Mojo Nixon
Then your store could use some fixin'"
We got into a car
Away we started rollin'
I said "How much you pay for this?"
She said "Nothing man, it's stolen"
Punk rock girl you look so wild
Punk rock girl let's have a child
We'll name her Minnie Pearl
Just you and me
Eating fudge banana swirl
Just you and me
We'll travel round the world
Just you and me punk rock girl

I've had drive through thai food in Nashville, TN. It doesn't work that well in the car though.
But if you're going to talk about wrapping up the food and changing it so much... why not drive through ethiopian food? That's already eaten with big, spongy, flat breads - much less of a stretch to wrap it in that rather than mop it up with it!

There is actually a Panda Express drive thru in Falls Church. Fast food chinese would not be easy to eat while driving. Maybe an egg roll, but everything else you would need 2 hands to eat.
I can imagine someone trying to drive down the street with a chinese food container in one hand chopsticks in the other and trying to drive a car. Sounds like a disaster to me.

I'm gonna have to do a little test where I get some shredded beef, or hibachi chicken and put it in a flatbread kind've sandwhich. I bet it'll turn out to be awesome.
Also, to clarify again, I'm talking about a stand alone fast food chinese restaurant with drive-thru's. Not ones in the malls or in schools. I do see that other's have noted seeing the kind I'm taking about in other states. But I wonder why it hasn't caught fire.
Also, along the lines of wrap type meals, there's a place over at The Source mall in Westbury/Carle Place called PF Chang's China Bistro (http://www.pfchangs.com/) that make these great Lettuce Wraps with chicken or vegetarian style things and they're awesome PF Chang's Menu (http://www.pfchangs.com/cuisine/menu_main.jsp#apps).
If executed properly with good creative meals made for on the go, this Chinese fast food - drive-thru concept of ours could be a huge success.

OK, I think we're all having good ideas in here.
A concern I would have in opening a place like that would be diversity of products. We couldn't just put EVERYTHING in a wrap and sell it. Maybe a good portion of things, but not everything. So we need to talk about what actually will be sold there that can be eaten by hand.
Chicken wings are a good choice I think. Someone already talked about fried wontons. Shrimp Toast can probably be made into bite size pieces and fried like fries. Egg rolls are a no brainer.
Moo Shu is already made in a wrap, so that's a lock for fast food.
How about meats on a stick? That's pretty "On the go" if you ask me.
Think what McDonalds sells. Mostly things on buns, so I guess it would be OK for us to sell things mostly in wraps. Then you could offer a lot of other things that most Chinese places offer, like soups and bowls of food for eat in.
It's an interesting idea, but would take a lot of refining to make a bunch of investors bite.

So my good friend Jason gave me this info on China Jump along with some memories to boot.
This is from The Dealmakers Issue Number 39 for the week of November 3, 1995
China Jump, Inc.
dba China Jump
Steve DePetris
c/o Legend Properties
1xxx Crawford Place #1xx
Mount Laurel, NJ 08054
609-231-xxxx, Fax 231-xxxx
Food
The four-unit chain operates locations in NJ and PA. The restaurants, serving Chinese fast food, occupy spaces of 1,500 sq.ft. to 2,200 sq.ft. in freestanding facilities and strip centers. Preferred anchors include Blockbuster Video. Plans call for as many as 12 openings in the coming 18 months. Expansion will take place in FL, GA, MD, NC and NJ. Preferred demographics include a population of 50,000 within three miles earning at least $45,000. Leases running at least five years are typical and the company prefers a vanilla shell.
Memories include (care?):
Here's what I remember...China Jump was a "fast food" Chinese place in Montgomeryville, 1994-96? It's now a Kinko's. I remember going on one of the very first nights it was open and nobody was there. We talked to the one manager who came there from Kentucky. They were (hopefully) starting a chain, and there was that one and one in South Jersey somewhere. I remember there being 3 or 4. They had great business, at least early on, and I'm not sure why they went under. The food was good, and generally cheap. The "platters" were generally either $3.99 or $4.99. But whenever I mention the place, Wokaroni and Cheese always comes up in the conversation. Mac and cheese in an eggroll shell. I hate mac and cheese probably more than any other food, at least the common ones, but I have to admit that Wokaroni and Cheese was quite an invention.
I am hungry for something unhealthy now.
Kindest Regards, Your Fluff

I'm pretty lazy in that I'd rather drive up to a window and get the food than to go into the restaurant, order it, get it and go. I'm sure the same thing was said before Taco Bell came along, or Subway. It may sound weird and unthinkable, but with some creativity I'm sure it could be done.
And done sucessfully.

I LOVE PF Chang's! Their Mongolian beef is the best and the lettuce wraps are really yummy. I like that you can make your own sauce at the table at the spiciness you want it.
There are tons of free standing Panda Express restaurants around here, no drive thru though.
In Houston there was this place called Timmy Chan's that was the best, greasiest take-out. They were famous for their wings and the fried rice. Mmmm.
