Probably a dumb question, but this is bugging the hell out of me, there's this band releasing some music i really want to get it. It's listed as CDep format, now i know what vinyl is but what the hell is that? I'm just a young unknowledgeable kid so please tell me what it is and what I need to listen to one of these! I've searched all over the internet btw, this is my last refuge.

Basically it is just a short play CD. Bands would either release a 7" record and then it would later come out on CD or not at all and it would be a CDep or sometimes even a 10" or in some caes a 11" record and it would be a CDep as well and would have a few more songs on it but not quite be a full length.

There were also the Mini Cassettes and the Mini Albums which would come out on a 12" record as well.

CDep's or just EP's in general would also be released as a teaser or sorts. In Indie circles just as a filler inbetween records. Like, "OK,we have these few songs done and they don't really fit but our fans want to hear it so here, an EP." Or in some extreme cases when it comes to major label bands EP's are used as an extra money maker if the band is reallt popular and they have a bunch of pointless leftover songs from the bands prior recording sessions that they can marke as another CD cause all the sheep will buy it.

I have all of mine in my collection broken down by size and format cause I have no life. I just lump my CD Singles in as CDep's also.

Some of mine are:

REFUSED.......THE NEW NOISE THEOLOGY E.P.......BURNING HEART/EPITAPH.......CDEP

CELTIC FROST.......MORBID TALES.......METAL BLADE.......EP (Vinyl)

There were also Split EP's that came out too.

AT THE DRIVE-IN & SUNSHINE.......BIG WHEEL RECREATION.......SPLITEP (Vinyl)

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE/BEAVER.......MAN'S RUIN.......CDEPSPLIT (4 Songs)

LEATHERFACE/HOT WATER MUSIC.......BYO SPLIT SERIES/VOLUME I.......BYO.......CDSPLIT (10 Songs)

Orety much it is all over the map as far as format but to answer your question, CDep is a short play CD. Bottom line it is all music and format doesn't reallly matter.

Unless of course it is some bizarre size record or a die cut CD that just makes you wonder how the hell they made it.

I have a 5" record from The Melins where they cover Flipper and a few CDep's where it is a 5" CD but only 3" diameter of the disc is used and the outer 2" diameter of the disc is clear. NOFX's The Decline was like that and I thought it was the coolest thing I ever saw. Until of course I discovered the mighty Waifle and they had blood splatter over their transparent CD. INSANE!

EP's are coming back and I couldn't be happier.

I've bought nine in the past few months and they all kick ass.

I think it's a great thing for bands to put out to still show they're around and for them to test a possible direction change in their sound...I don't know why they kinda went out of vogue in favor of splits for a few years.

Splits are a bit fun when they have both bands covering each others songs.

The Casket Lottery and Small Brown Bike has a split this past year where both bands collaborated on writing and playing all of the songs on the record. I thought that was a really cool idea to hear both bands gel as one.

Sweet, thanks for the explanation fluffernutter! Helps out a lot

And Refused is basically my favorite band, the CDep i wanted to get is 93 million miles from the sun(Some of refused mixed with others). Listened to a small clip of "this party sucks" off of it and I just need to get it.

Thanks again, seeeeyaah.
