The octane scale in gasoline is a measurement of how efficiently the gas combusts. For a regular engine, 87 is fine for everday use. 89 usually gets you slightly better combustion, as well as a detergent. 92 combusts really well, and is mostly for high-compression engines that need to explode the most amount of gas in the shortest amount of time.
