I work for a utility, and I dont know all the answers. The question I have been asking and for which I have not been getting a a straight answer is about our power plants. We have a few power plants in my locale, and I hear that the public gets mad everytime it is suggested that a new one be built. The "not in my back yard" argument and all that. The question I have, and correct me if Im wrong, is, With all the power plants that we have, how does a failure in fucking Canada or Ohio affect us here? I understand the idea that all the lines are connected, and that many plants and their power lines make up the power grid, and it is their interconnectedness that strengthens the grid as a whole and all. But why then, do we need to have power plants nearby? If the public has issues with them because they dont like to see the wires and towers stretching across the horizon..why do we need them locally? If the power companys argument is that they are needed, why were we without power down state, when the problem was upstate? Beyond their interconnectedness strength, which they tout, I think their argument fails in the face of the fact that having the plants local doesnt mean shit when there is an local outage. Youd think that if Manhattan has power plants, and a surge in Ohio happens and it temporarily knocks out Manhattan, then a switch should be thrown that cuts off Manhattan from upstate and New Yorks power plants come back on and New York has lights again, generated by its own plants. Right?

They're not giving you one cuz they don't know either. If anyone knew the answer, the blackout wouldn't have happened.
But aside from all this, what about the plans for "In the event of a nuclear missle attack" all the government ideas of missles shooting down missles, protective shield to protect us. Why waste money on all this if we don't even know if it's going to work properly (theoritically-maybe). Like they said steps were insured to prevent that the blackout of the 70's would not happen again and countermeasures were put forth to prevent it. They even had an agency that NO ONE even knew about (the North Eastern something..). Can't think anymore than 2 minutes sorry....

I need more candles.
In Africa, they use animal fat in a coconut shell with a bit of twisted jute as a wick for candles. They even light it by banging rocks together. So clever! :p

So in both places they use primitive tools to provide the lights.
