View Full Version : Johnny Depp to play Willy Wonka

According to today's NY Post, Johnny Depp and Tim Burton will team for a fourth time in this remake. While Gene Wilder's performance in the original is classic, I think Depp is the one actor who has the chops to follow in his footsteps.

Johnny Depp would play a pretty good Willy Wonka I guess.
For some reason I'd like to see Robin Williams play Willy Wonka. It would just seem right. Of course Robin would have to be serious funny and not just goofy. I'm sick of the goofy Robin Williams. I can just see Robin playing a good Willy Wonka for some reason.
And nobody can beat Gene Wilder's performance. His acting in this and Young Frankenstein was great.

as much as i hate to say it, i agree. i hate Williams but i could see him being a good Wonka. and if he sucks at least i would enjoy bashing him. its one of my favorite movies. Gene Wilder was awesome.

Even though i hated Willy Wonka i'd have to say that Depp is a very good choice. I think he has the range and of course if you dont think he can be nutty enough you should check out Ed Wood.

Allow me to explain why this chaps my ass...
There used to be this great song by Queen, an Epic really, called Bohemian Rhapsody, and now when I hear it all I see are Wayne and Garth and dammit can't there be like a Total UN-Recall where I can hear that awesome song again and not see guys in a car air drumming?
In fact, there used to be a really cool skit on SNL about two guys who had a cable access show; and now when I think of That I see that no-talent chick [what's her name, the 'bass player'; I've blocked it] from the Wayne's World Movies.
Coneheads.
Ladies Man.
The Superstar molly shannon chick with the armpit thing.
Stuart Smalley.
All once either fairly funny, or hilarious bits; now ruined in my memory by the movies.
And the movie remakes/sequels?
Rollerball
The Blob
Planet of the Apes
Godzilla [oh fuck me im so pissed at this one still]
I once saw Chuck Heston and a movie that scared the shit out of me; now in my mind...ack!
And speaking of having the shit scared out of you; the boat sequence in Willy Wonka just ruled...
LEAVE IT BEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee......

i say "why not?" you will always have the first one...
i think Johnny Depp sounds good... i wouldn't think Robin Williams just because he's too energetic/whacky... the 1st Willy(Wilder) had a 'controlled' whackiness to him...
i'm more curious to see who plays Charlie... that kid was "perfect" and was the key character, in my little book, in my little world...

a quiet, more sophisticated Robin Williams might work. One that is controlled and easy to understand, but also being crafty and witty. I'd like it if he was as calm and collected as he was in "Insomnia", minus the whole killing-a-teenage-girl thing. That just wouldn't work right...
And Mike, I would have to agree with you. Remakes of films never work. And they always suck. But most of the time its only because they rewrite the film and call it a "remake" when they really just screwed up the storyline and stole the name for publicity. Damn those people in Hollywood.

Do I think they should remake this movie? No. Was Gene an amazing Wonka? Absolutly. But if anyone, and I mean anyone, could play Wonka and do a decent job I believe it to be Johnny Depp. It's gonna be a tough job to win people over with this movie, but I think Depp has the acting ability to do it.

I'm torn.
Depp is probably my favorite actor and easily the best of the last 15 years or so.
But I love Wilder and think his turn as Wonka is in my top 5 of ALL TIME movie performances.
But then again, outside of the brilliant comedic elements (The teacher telling the kids about the new test schedule? CLASSIC), I thought the first Wonka film was unable to depict ANY of the fantastic wonders from the book outside of the Oompa-Loompa's. I think a modern remake of this film can work in that regard, especially with someone like Burton. Even when I don't like his films, they LOOK spectacularly bizarre and interesting. "Sleepy Hollow" is pretty uneven, but it LOOKS fantastic and I can't take my eyes off of it...and Depp is great in it.
For a director and a leading man, I'm satisfied. The two films CAN co-exist if they're both good. But this new one can ONLY be sold if they pull in a top-notch screenwriter or two. I say go balls-out and get Charlie Kaufman and make this thing as subtly and wickedly INSANE as Dahl wanted it to be.

Brad Pitt is a close second. Maybe. Actually, he's only good if he uglies himself up or plays crazy.
He did a damn good job bucking that "pretty boy" thing.
Same with Depp.
And I stand by the "easily". It would have been Penn if he hadn't pretty much stopped making good movies after "Sweet & Low Down".

Please please don't let it be that kid from the Sixth Sense.
Also Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka is an insult in comparison to Gene Wilder, first of all I loved the first one and there is no need to redo it. I'm certain now that Tim Burton will ruin this movie.
I can think of a number of better people who are much more versatile than Depp in this role. I'm not saying Johnny Depp is a bad actor, but he is not nor could be Willy Wonka.

I love the original, but I think I am going to love this one even
more. For one thing, Tim Burton is one of my fave directors (as
long as I try to forget what he did to Planet of the Apes). Also,
supposedly this time around they are going to make the movie
from the book, not do a remake of the first film (which wasn't
true to the book, and which Roald Dahl hated).
i heard about this remake about a year ago there first
pick to play him was and i;m not lieing Marilyn Manson.
I remember hearing that, too, and though I was psyched, I
couldn't believe it. So I researched it. At the time the rumor
surfaced, Tim Burton wasn't even slated to be the director.
Some guy named Gary Ross (I think) was. And the stuff about
Marilyn was baloney based on something he had said in an
interview about how he'd love to play Willy Wonka and thought
he'd do a damn good job in the role.
I have to wonder if the rumor wasn't a self-fulfilling prophecy
now that Burton is going to direct. I'm still a little
disappointed Marilyn won't be Wonka, but if it has to be
someone else, I can't think of anyone better than Depp. Except
for maybe Gary Oldman.
Let's not forget, Wonka's a sadist. He was my first crush.

zackly. what's the point of remaking it? was it done poorly the first time? no. Did the movie miss the book by that much? (imo) no (yeah I know the book was darker - wooo!). will it be made better by remaking it? maybe
This is actually good because when folks think they have created everything and need to go back and recreate things, it's a sign complacency. This, historically, has allowed new stuff to bubble up. Maybe this will be a decade after all.
The remake RnF story is a better bet. I loved hearing it the first time.

Exactly.
These people who try to remake Godzilla and Planet of the Apes don't give a shit that you can't remake a Phenomenon, which both of these movies became. Hence, the remakes were piles of shit. Movie by Commitee.
Ron's spiel on the 1970s movies? I was real doubtful, actually didnt believe it at all; but I went to IMDB and compared the top movies of the 70s, with the top movies of the 80's. Please forgive the lists, but they are edited down from 100 each:
Top Twenty IMDB Movies of the 1970's Decade:
1 Godfather, The (1972)
2 Godfather: Part II, The (1974)

17 Conversation, The (1974)
18 Sleuth (1972)
19 Young Frankenstein (1974)

19 Platoon (1986)
20 Fanny och Alexander (1982)
----------------------------
Now, I don't know if it's just me, but i see a HUGE difference in the type of movies made in the 1970s that were so popular; they were filmed not by commitee, but by some peeps who had some great ideas, and a script, but that was about it. How it got shot was the Director's job, and he gave the studio the movie, and the studio, I guess, judging by the lists, the studios trusted the Directors.
That 1908s list is great but come ON, look at the Godfather, Conversation, Cuckoo's Nest, Python, Annie Hall; those are movies that are basically a collection of scenes of people talking. Sure there's action, fantastic stuff, but think of the quotes that have come from that list of 1970s movies; obscure, individualistic. Like the movies, like the Directors.
You can't re-create that dialouge. Godfather? Who'd even imagine a re-make. Cuckoo's Nest? Can't be done; not Jack describing that ball game, not in a million years by any actor ever. Wilder's Wonka? Not a chance in the world.

Not at all; in fact it shows, for these dialouge and acting-based films, it's more individualistic. I mean the movie the Conversation may well be the most boring movie ever, to watch. But there it is, up there.
Beat's me, it's 2AM and i'm fried. Why do these stupid fucking lists suck me in? Every time they bring up a list of 'best of' movies or albums or guitarists here or on R+F I try my best, but I end up debating the finer points of crap like this. And I don't know crap about movies, just what I like.

I understand your point and agree with it, but looking at that list, aside from having both Godfather Movies which I think are the greatest films made, the 1980's list doesn't seem to be lacking as much as you say. Now when you expand and include all the crap that was made by commitee, then your point is proven.

I'm not a big fan of the original Wonka, so I'm looking forward to what Tim Burton can do.
As for the lists, remember that the movie industry was in an economic slump through the mid-70's and it didn't turn around until Star Wars in 1977, and it may be my fave movie, it introduced alot of the excesses that Hollywood based itself off of through the late 70's to today.

Yeah I was wondering how many of each list I should put there; I saw 'Network" at 21 and was like, grrrr....
Anyway; I'm sorry I forget who mentioned what but:
-As tho the budgetary thing? See, there ya go! I had no idea. I do know that Coppola had to do something like mortgage his house to get funds to finish Apocylypse Now. There's a great documentary of what a cluster-fuck making the movie was. I think the studio actually said No, no more money. If you can't finish the film? No film.
As to the difference in the lists; I agree the Godfather's skew that list, and maybe it's simply the Nostalgia factor that the 70s movies are simply older. And it's not like there was some new Laws of Cinema adopted in 1980. I could have Sworn Alien was an early 80s release.
And another big deifference I see that perhaps means nothing, just a statistical blip of these top twenties, but looking at the 1970s list, I dont see many [any? Grail?] foreign films; and the 80s list is chock full of them. Or am I wrong on this too?
I'm too skewed; I like depressing films, dark films...

No Mizzle, you're right. And for good reason.
Yes, there were many fine foreign films produced in the seventies, many from old sixties standbys (Truffaut, Bertolucci, Rohmer, Bunuel, Wadja) as well as many fantastic films from a new breed of German directors (Wenders, Herzog, Fassbinder). However, American filmmaking was at its zenith in the seventies, so it tended to overshadow international cinema.
By the time the eighties rolled around, American filmmaking (with some notable exceptions) had been reduced to limp formula. Therefore, we started to see foreign films get wider distribution and reach larger audiences. Most of the year-end best of lists I remember reading from the eighties were dominated by foreign films.
Speaking of Willy Wonka and foreign films. Where the hell was the movie supposed to take place? Wonka, Charlie and his family are American, yet everyone else in town has a British accent. The town looks like it's in Germany. What gives?

Another reason why I hate Hollywood.. Why mess with the original?? Do you really have to remake an old, excellent, classic?? Aren't there any original ideas out there??.......... I forgot.. its California...
They're not remaking the original. They're doing a new adaptation of the book which the original was based on. That won't stop people from comparing it to the first one, though.

I wonder what the movie would be rated if it came out today. Lots of creepy and psychadelic scenes. But probably the most frightening scene for the Red States would be this:

They're not "changing" the movie, i mean they are but they're not. Burton is just completely remaking it out of the book by Roald Dahl, the book the first Willy Wonka strayed from.
So whatever.

I don't care that they remake the movie. The old move was good, but Gene Wilder was great in it. I think that's the main problem. The surrounding cast, I'm sure, could probably do a better job, depending on casting. This is a perfect movie for Tim Burton, especially if he reverts back to his Pee Wee's Big Adventure and Beetlejuice style. I just can't imagine a better style of Willy Wonka than Gene's.

I stand by my last post on this crime against celluloid.
Youd think all the creative talent that will obviously be poured into this, one, or a few might go: hey, were the best here, how about instead of copying some stuff, we actually use our brains and think Original Thoughts and Ideas on a Original and New movie about...
Just like the music industry; there was a time major labels welcomed albums that sounded unfamiliar, or had something new and different to offer; the industry now, like the movie industry has two choices:
-make a film thats aim is to be a good film
-make a film thats aim is to make a lot of money
sometimes, rarely, the two meet in the aim of a movie. I think.
What the hell, its all our faults anyway; we eat this shit up.

Beetlejuice
Mars Attacks!
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Pee-wee's Big Adventure
Edward Scissorhands.
I will admit, I wasn't the biggest fan of Planet of the Apes, nor the attitude that came with it, but this movie looks like it could be a throwback to the films I love.
Throwbacks to previous styles seldom work in my book, but an old fan can hope, can't he?

Oh you can tell this is a Tim Burton film just by the trailer.
With Depp at the helm of the acting core though odds are this movie will surprise people at how good it is. (remember Pirates and the oscar nod?) I will say this has the odds in it's favor.
I'll go see it.
if for anything....Depp is a great actor.

You know, it's very possible for a film to be simple and ordinary and not as visually stunning as someone like Tim Burton can make, yet still be leaps and bounds better than the remake. It's possible for the simple reason that it wasn't so much about the effects and stylings as it was about telling a story. The original did that, my prediction based upon seeing the trailer so far is that this will be nothing more than an empty movie with lots of style and weird Johnny Debb facial expressions.

Thats always the case. Add 25 years and people call it a classic. Alot of the movies on AMC were the mundane, tripe of the day. Now there considered "Period Pieces" and classics. And really innovative, artistic old films (Fellini, Film Noir) are never played. Even though the whole 70's trend toward darker, more realistic films (Now considered a golden age of film) would not have happened without them.

What made the first one so good (at least to this fan's eyes) was the satire of the first one. How people can be so caught up with something material, that they're willing to set aside their own humanity to obtain it. A lot of those scenes were wickedly funny ("Did you hear me? It's the Wonka Bars or you Husband's life!") But the centerpiece was Wilder's performance, and the writing was genius. It was witty, yet referenced a lot of classical literature. Based on that trailer, it looks like Wonka will be some hip, ultra modern guy with a lot of that attitude that kids love so dearly today.

You kinda missed the point of what you quoted me saying.
It could be Burton...it could be someone else...WHOEVER is directing it, I just want to see a version that tries to be like the book. The original film, outside of sharing the overall situation and character names, seems like a completely different entity. People can think it's a good movie on its own...but it is NOT the Charlie and The Chocolate Factory I loved reading a quadzillion times as a kid. Not by a longshot. Maybe this one will be.
And outside of the Oompah-Loompah's, NOBODY better be fucking singing.
Of course there are funny parts in the first one. Wilder is perfect throughout, and like GFM, there are some hilarious little bits during the contest....a Nazi war criminal finding the last ticket in South America, the ransom scene...and best of all, Charlie's teacher. That guy rules. But once they hit the factory, I'm sorry, but if you really loved the book, it's a MONSTROUS letdown, and not hardly just in the visuals.
