The same could be said for Clerks, it was good for what it was, but people were giving it way too much credit.

but hosp you gotta take it how it was. a $29,000 dollar movie with absolutely no effects, and basically 0 action. the allure with kevin smith back then was how well he could get across a movie plot with dialogue.
if you think about all the movies around then and since, none of them seem to carry that well without all kinds of actions and effects. the only action in clerks was running from a funeral home.
i actually have always thought clerks as a premise would have made a terrible movie if it was originally done with all recources cause it would have taken away from the script.
and yes zoolander fans, thats script, S-C-R-I-P-T, not a cocktail napkin that says derilique my balls

Aggie I bought "The Green Mile" for $7 without ever seeing, and watched it for the first time Early this morning. AWSOME movie. And it's more girly then manly I'd think, so I know you'd like it. Plus theres a huge black guy in it.
I havnt seen matrix and have no desire to.

Apocalypse Now - In my top 5. See it.
American History X - Excellent movie. See it.
Fatal Attraction - Notable more for reviving a psycho stalker formula that spawned a thousand clones, than for being all that good. If you were a guy I'd say see it, because it really freaks us out. But as a woman you might find yourself rooting for Glenn Close, and I just can't have that.
Rushmore - Excellent and original. Must see.
Schindler's List - Exactly the powerful movie you expect it to be. It's a must see.
Spinal Tap - I didn't see it until recently. I didn't think it held up to my expectations. You're on your own.
Taxi Driver - Come on! Don't see it with a Texan though. They won't get it.
The Graduate - It's excellent, but subject to over-expectations. Think of it as an enjoyable movie rather than a movie extravaganza and see it.
EDIT: I'm adding...
The Green Mile - I liked it but I thought it was a manipulative tear-jerker like Spielberg has been doing for the last 20 years. Put it in the middle of your list.
The Exorcist - Pretty groundbreaking for it's time, but now there's some cheese factors in it that might put you off if you see it with the wrong crowd. It's an awesome movie, but see it with someone who hasn't seen it or see it alone. Basically, make sure you allow yourself to be creeped out, and see it. SIDE STORY (don't read while operating heavy machinery): I saw the re-release recently at Union Station in DC, which is basically the black theater that comedians have been talking about for years. I was hoping to get into the creepyness because I hadn't seen it since I was like 14. My plan was ruined by the audience narration, but once I accepted that I wasn't going to be scared I laughed my ass off at the people around me. "Bitch you better get up out that bed and clean up this mess 'fore I put my demon foot up yo ass!" *White people are so scared of black people."*
Trainspotting - Pretty damn good, but I don't think I'd be any less of a person without it.
Deliverance - You might recognize some of your neighbors in it. I remember seeing it as a kid so I have no idea what it would be like to see it for the first time now. Alot of movies in the 80s ripped off the whole crazy hillbillies theme, so deliverence may seem stale now. I'm sure you won't be sorry you saw it, and you definitely won't ever forget it. Definitely see it, but remember, it's not a documentary!
Mine: (this is the list of "must see" movies I keep on IMDB)
Badlands
Hud, Harper, Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean, and any other old Paul Newman flick I haven't seen. I have a total man-crush on Paul Newman.
WC Fields movies (saw one or two as a kid, but I've been meaning to see some recently. I have a feeling I'm going to love the old bastard.)
Do the Right Thing
Lawrence of Arabia
Pornstar: The Legend of Ron Jeremy
Once Upon a Time in America
Missing
Rocky Horror Picture Show
Schizopolis
Zelig
Salvador
Nixon
Time Bandits
Biloxi Blues (1988)
The Conversation
Godfather II & III
M
Touch of Evil
Glory
I'm a freak about movies.

I've spent this summer going to the library and checking out movies (mostly from the 70s) I should have seen but never have, as well as seeing movies I've only seen once a long, long time ago.
Some were worth the hype (THE DEER HUNTER, CHINATOWN), others weren't (NASHVILLE, GIANT). The list is still huge...here are just 12 from the 70s and 80s I still need to see:
Taxi Driver
Straw Dogs
Marathon Man
Slap Shot
Being There
Mean Streets
Wicker Man
Gandhi
Once Upon a Time in America
Full Metal Jacket
Meet the Feebles
Lost in America
Does anyone use Netflix? I see an end in the stock at the library, and Alexandria's Video Vault's half price Tuesdays are the only real alternative.

I love Netflix. I've been a member for over a year and have been able to catch up on a lot of movies I hadn't been able to see. I highly recommend it. NO OVERDUE FEES! YAY! And if I'm good about watching them and sending them back pretty quick, I can see about a dozen films in a month. Not bad for $20.

Saw it a few years ago.
Bored.
To.

I'm convinced that the reason this gets so much smoke blown up its ass is that people back in the 70s just didn't have much in way of horror films back then.
Outside of the one scene from the "never before seen De1eted scenes!" version which has the incredibly unnerving spider-walk down the stairs scene, I'd rather take a Bava or Argento horror flick over this any day of the week. Scariest movie ever my ASS.

Outside of the one scene from the "never before seen De1eted scenes!" version which has the incredibly unnerving spider-walk down the stairs scene, I'd rather take a Bava or Argento horror flick over this any day of the week. Scariest movie ever my ASS.
Since many of the Argento films were made in the 70s, and many of the Bava films are also from that time or earlier, I don't know if I agree that people in the 70s didn't know horror movies.
The problem with this, and many movies on this list, is the hype. It's always better to discover these things on your own. Any movie that you already hear is suppose to be "The Scariest Movie Of All Time" will never live up to it.
THE EXORCIST's fear comes from a combination of the individual viewers faith, as well as universal themes of loss of control (who isn't just a tad freaked out that your mind could just snap?) or harm to your children. The movie is dated, but only in the way that any movie from that era is dated - pacing, plotting, styles. My favorite moment in the EXORCIST is when the doctor lights up a cigarette in the middle of the hospital.
I think THE EXORCIST can still be very effective. I saw it recently at a midnight show at the Uptown, and it was wonderful. It may not have the ability to shock or scare anymore, but I think it is such a well crafted, dark film that ultimately finds redemption and hope.
IF you are a fan of Bava, there is a crappy public access show in Fairfax County over the weekends that shows a bunch of that stuff. I know I've seen BLACK SABBATH, BLACK SUNDAY and even the Fulci ZOMBIE and HOUSE BY THE CEMETARY. It's hosted in that wacky Elvira/Zacherly fashion. It's great to catch those movies, even if the host parts slow things down.

I don't know if I've said this before, but here goes. Jurassic Park was a great movie. The Lost World was even better than the first if you exclude the last 20 minutes. The third is decent, but only if you go just to see some cool special effects. The first 2 had a message: don't fuck around with nature. The message of the third was: Don't parasail looking for dinosaurs.
