Outside I hear these sounds, Im assuming its an insect, Ive always heard these sounds my whole life in the summer, but cannot identify what it is! Its in the trees, it makes sounds in groups of 3s or 4s, like zzzz, zzzz, zzzz, and its seems like another creature in another tree is responding with a slightly different pitch. What IS it thats making these noises? I dont think its a cricket, becuase it seems like its well above the ground level. Crickets seem to have this continuous sound, higher pitched and not nearly as staccato. Anyone?

i just did a yahoo search with the power of zeus and the speed of Apollo and found this:

cicada

http://www.desertusa.com/mag98/july/papr/photos/cicadis.jpg

That humming, buzzing chorus of insects heard on summer nights is usually due to cicadas -- small, stout-bodied, large-headed insects with sucking mouth parts. Cicadas are usually green with red and black markings. They are an inch or more in length and have 2 pair of wings. Cicadas also have a 3-jointed beak, an abdomen of six segments, prominent compound eyes, and three eyes (ocelli).

you welcome!

Well, actually, I was the one who posted one on cicadas, but it wasnt about this sound they make. I didnt know that they had made different night noises, but now that I think of it, it makes sence, sice I dont hear it after their season is over. It seems like they are communicating or at least trying to locate one another because ther calls seem like they are answered in repetition.

Funkman, I am so totally grossed out by those cicadas and seeing that picture posted totally made me sceeve. I was actually at a Greek festival on Friday night, and a cicada flew down and landed on a jewlery case I was looking at. If that wasn't bad enough (and I never knew I could run so quickly and scream at the same time), the man selling the jewlery picked it up with his bare hands. I thought I was going to pass out from the grossness of it all. They are nasty filthy bugs. Needless to say, I did not buy the piece of jewelry I wanted. Ahh, but I didn't want a bag of jewels anyway... I just wanted to suck his cock.

Cicadas are cool.

After they leave, they leave thousands of dried-out husks that you can run out and scrunch.
