Yes, I'm ashamed to admit it. This is your standard Internet Book List thread

I just finished the third book in George R. R. Martin's Song of Fire and Ice series called "A Storm of Swords". I haven't really read any fantasy since high school since it all seemed to be the same story (*cough* Tolkien or Conan *cough*) with different names, but this series came so highly recommended I gave it a try. I now pass this reccommendation on to you. Totally different and unexpected plotlines, a nice fun read.

Now I am starting into "Prey" by Michael Crichton. I read Jurrasic Park, Lost World and Sphere a long time ago and they were all good, entertaining books.

For what it's worth, Sphere deserves to be on the worst Book to Movie translation top five list.

So what are you reading this summer, hopefully from a hammock just before naptime.

Reefer Madness by Eric Schlossinger

He wrote 'Fast-Food Nation' which was a Huge best-seller abut the modern food-industry. Read this and you will never look at food the same.

'Reefer Madness' is about 3 things:

1. The underground mariujana industry in the USA

2. The underground Migrant Workers industry in the USA

3. The underground Porno and Prostitution industry in the USA

It's really about...the underground. From the book:

'at its simplest, the American underground is where economic activities remain off the books, unrecorded, unreported, and in violation of the law...include moonlighting, check kiting, fencing stolen goods, street vending, tax evading, employing day laborers, child laborers, sweat shops; smuggling cigarettes, guns, immigrants...'

'By 1994 it [the estimate of the size of the underground] had reached 9.4 persent of GDP; Gross Domestic Product: about $650 billion.'

You can read the rest of this excerpt at the amazon site; I can not recommend this highly enough.

Right now I'm re-reading the circumstances behind one Mark Young, who as a middleman, brokered the sale of several hundred pounds of marijuana. Because of minimum mandatory laws and the 3-strikes rule,

'On February 8, 1992, Mark Young was sentenced by Judge Sarah Evans to life imprisonment without possibility of parole.'

'It's a sad day for everbody in the courtroom' she said. 'That concludes the matter.'

While it doesn't explain anywhere why in blue blazes a parent would saddle their kid with a name like "Cormac", it's still a very good read.

I got this one the week it came out. It talks about one of the attacks being off Spring Lake, NJ. That's a 5 minute drive from me.

Amazing how the NJ/NY shore literally strung up nets and cages to protect bathers. Scary as hell.

If you want more Shark Terror, there are several books out on the sinking of the USS Indianapolis. Forget the newer one that came out a year or two ago. Scariest, most horrific experience I can imagine.

Rough going, because of the detailed accounts of the atrocities but a well-written book about a chapter of history that shouldn't be forgotten.

Two lessons so far: 1. societies that let their war hawks run unchecked are sure to bring bad things to their neighbors and themselves and 2. a useful counter-argument to any guilt-tripping liberal who claims that the US should have (or could have) ended WW2 any differently than Truman did.

sphere was much more true to the book than either of the dino movies.

You're right, what I said came out wrong. Sphere was such a good book and the movie followed the events the book faithfully, but something was lacking. The problem is that the book was suspenseful because of the inner conflict, doubts and second guessing that accompanioed each plot turn...if I recall a lot of that was through inner monologue. And I thought, while the movie did follow the events of the book, the suspense was not there, never got inside the actors head, felt flat. Bad movie.

While the dino movies were very different from the books, they were still fun to watch. The scientific backstory suffered though.

I did read "American Gods" earleir this year. I enjoyed it tremendously. Sort of like Barker without the kinky sex, but it don't make you a bad person. So "Neverland" should the next Gaiman novel to try?

I have no idea what Barker is doing but "Sacrement" is the last of his novels that I haven't read, have to pick that up soon...maybe time to go revisit Weavewolrd or Imajica.

This is too weird, I read "Survivor" earlier this year as well. It was my first time reading Chuck P. and quite frankly I think it went over my head. Might have to read Fight Club to see if writing style sinks in. I was more excited by Fight Club being a David Fincher movie than anything else. People who think Fight Club is the end all and be all scare me a little bit.

As much as I can appreciate that this was a horrible atrocity that has been forgotten by history, I can't see it as the worst atrocity of WW2. I just think it's important to keep the perspective of 300,000 killed in Nanking, and more in other massacres in China and Southeast Asia, compared to 6 million Jews. It may seem that the savagery of the murders and rapes should give this case more weight, but it shouldn't be thought to overshadow the brutality of the Jewish Holocaust. Look up the SS's "Einsatzgruppen," the travelling death squads that roamed through Europe systematically massacring Jews and other non-Aryans. Nanking was horrible, but should stand out for it's lack of historical attention, not for being anywhere near the German Holocaust.

"Neverwhere" is quite good, but don't stop there. As someone else recommended, pick up "Coraline", as well as "Stardust" (either the graphic novel or his novelized version of it) and "Smoke and Mirrors", his anthology. If you're into comics, get ALL of the "Sandman" stuff you can. I can't say enough good things about Gaiman.

I have no idea what Barker is doing but "Sacrement" is the last of his novels that I haven't read, have to pick that up soon...maybe time to go revisit Weavewolrd or Imajica.

I could never quite finish "Galilee" (which came after "Sacrament") - I just got bogged down in the early chapters and never quite made it. I'll have to give it another go. I have also not picked up "Coldheart Canyon".

I like Barker very much, but unfortunately I think he peaked with his horror years ago (I personally think that "The Damnation Game" is just his crowning achievement in the genre), although a lot of his dark fantasy such as "Weaveworld" and "Imajica" is top notch.

"6 Days of War" by Michael B Oren. This is probably the most even-handed version of the Arab-Israeli conflict that has ever been released or will ever be released.

BLARGH.
"ARAB AND JEW"
"FROM BEIRUT TO JERUSALEM"

What a shame that, due to their hatred of Jews, people rewrite history to show the Jews as the oppressors. Especially now with Arabs killing innocent people all the time, and the Israelis specifically targeting the criminals directly, and yet we still see the blunt hatred of Jews. Very revealing.

The Goon Squad is the underground. Declaring war on everything... Declaring war on nothing. We are your children raised on ritalin and prozac, biting the hand that's reared us... pissing down our heros throats.

All we are is all you have made us...Given nothing. Taking everything. Making this world a place of our own.

I'm just finishing up Jeff Sharra's "The Glorious Cause"-it's the sequel to "Rise to Rebellion"-a good read for Revolutionary War aficianados- Love any books on history(even though this was a novel using historical facts)-highly recommended!!!

What?

I posted those books because they're by FAR the best, most balanced books on the subject and history of the conflict that I've come across. How did you get ANY of what you posted from my post? Hell, Friedman's "From Beirut To Jerusalem" is practically required reading in our government agencies these days...I offered them up instead of "6 Days of War" because I found the latter's larger historical scope to be pretty limited. The others cover almost EVERYTHING from the last 60 years.

If you feel the need to push phantom, horseshit agendas, go here instead.
