Everyone knows some sort of myth or legend about where they live. For instance, on Long Island there is Amityville Horror House, Mary's Grave, the Legend of John Smith and Whisper the Bull etc.

I went to see Mary's grave with my friend today, and we thought it would be fun to take pictures and explore a little.

I was just wondering about other popular legends that people know about.

Here is the site I made that has all of my pictures from today, and the legend that made Mary's Grave popular on Long Island:

Wow, I live on the Island too and never knew that, cool! I use to live in Glen Cove and was walking in the woods down by the water one day and found this huge tombstone and it was for a horse that must have died on the spot and which belonged to a wealthy land owner that once owned many miles of the town and it was freaky becuase it was like someone had gone through all this effort!

How about Mount Misery? That's a freaky area. It got the church with the upside down crosses on the doors, some boy scout camp or something, and the bridge where a bunch of people got killed.

There's also the "haunted" house in Massapequa. Kind of spooky, but not really. I don't know anyone whose ever seen it during the day. They used to have a really nice 442 in the driveway.

that was a pretty blouse!

can't remember anything haunted in Jersey City, some of the people were damn scary but they were alive(I think)... hung out in a few of the local graveyards but no ghosts...

i really enjoyed visiting Salem Mass last year, what a cool story that was with the Witch Trials... Remonds me of an old horror movie with Christopher Lee named "Horror Hotel". It was about witches in a town called Whitewood in Mass...

Where is Mount Misery located? We are on a mission to hit all the haunted sites on the island and take pictures. I live right down the road from the Kings Park Psychiatric Hospital. I was in it once visiting a friend when I was a senior at Smithtown High School-- she was diagnosed with schitzophrenia. It was really freaky with bars on windows and doors with alarms. They locked me in the room with Becky. They let me give her the cookies that I baked, but kept the bottle of patchouli oil that I brought for her. About a month after the visit, she escaped-- ran away! I haven't seen her since, but have heard stories about "Becky" sightings. A few months after she ran away the entire place was shut down. We tried to go there last summer, but the security guards cornered us in a small lot and kicked us out. Maybe if I go in the daytime by foot, they won't kick me out.

Not a haunted legend but a real one for the folks of Long island...

The very largest Great White Sharks ever caught, are caught in Australia, off of California, and elsewhere, But some of the very biggest, over 25 feet in length, and weighing over 2,000 pounds, are caught off of the waters there, Montauk if memory serves.

Mount Misery is in I think Bethpage, maybe Melville, somewhere on Long Island. I'll look at a map and give you a better answer. The whole area is really fucked up.

Kings Park hospital is really creepy. I did some work there a few months ago. It was snowing at the timeand there was a bunch of perfectly straight melted areas connecting all the buildings. That was weird.

There's also a school in Levittown that got shut down probably like twenty years ago. Me and a couple of friends broke into it a few years ago and it looked like everybody just got up and left. There were books still sitting on desks, writing on the chalk boards, everything like a class was still going on, but covered with dust.

OK; my apologies, this is off topic in the thread I guess, but I wanted to get it right about Long Island. Holy shit the size of these fish:

In 1961 Capt. Mundus caught a 3,000lb great white off the bathing beach of Amagansett (Amity?), NY. The following year he caught a larger great white off Block Island.

His greatest claim to fame came in 1964 when, after a 5 hour struggle, he captured a 17 1/2', 4,500lb great white 10 miles off Montauk, Long Island. The shark required 5 harpoons, each attached to a beer barrel by a 400' rope, before it could be towed to shore. Benchley refers to this incident during his interview on the 20th anniversary edition of JAWS, but doesn't mention Capt. Mundus by name.

In 1986 Capt. Mundus and Capt. Donnie Braddick caught the largest fish ever taken on rod and reel, a 17', 3,427lb great white. Capt. Braddick was the angler, while Capt. Mundus baited the shark, drove the boat, and supervised the capture of the shark."

Mount Misery is in Huntington off Jerich Tpke., right by West Hills Park. I suggest you take it easy if you're driving at night.

There's also a place out in Famingville, the 7 somethingorothers, can't remember. Both are the two highest places on Long Island, so who knows.

And if you think Kings Park is scary, try driving into Pilgrim State - yikes!!!!

okay in ozone park they had a lady that was raped by a priest years ago, and she lives in this corner house. everyone around there refers to it as the 'witches house.' and ive seen this with my own eyes, everyday the house chages colors. i mean ive seen the house sky blue one day, and then stark white the next. the last time i saw it it was black.

alright strong islanders, anyone ever been past the munster house in massapequa? atleast it kind of looks like the munster's house, kind of fashioned after a haunted castle or something. it's kind of near the 2nd 135 exit, off of 107- it's near a closed hospital.

ps- what's that wacky military base out in montauk where the alien operations took place?

I've been to the Amityville Horror House, but I've never heard of Mount Misery and I work and live right over there. I'll have to check it out.

As for Mary's grave, I never knew of that one either, and I know exactly where that area is.

we had a train tunnel we called "dead mans tunnel"... it was pretty long and you had to focus hard to see the light at the other end... there were no lights inside and there was one platform to walk on. the stone walls were dirty/greasy.

it was kind of creepy and loud when a freight train went by us, we were scared of getting caught and hung close to the wall which meant alot of greasy/dirty pants...

one day i had to go shopping with my parents and when i got back i couldn't find my friends so i went to the tunnel by myself and walked it from end to end but never found them...
