What a stupid ass Jeffrey Lee Parsons is. This idiot could make millions of dollars creating computer programs. Instead he causes millions of dollars of lost revenueand major headaches for computer users.

Im sure he is a smart kid, but did he realize that everything done online can be traced?

There are a lot of "book-smart" people who absolutely don't have a shred of common sense.

This future-Unabomber is one of them.

he caused us some major headaches and alot of additional work... once the worm attached itself to our desktops it started sending out massive amounts of "ICMP" packets(Internet Control Message Protocol) or pings, which saturated all of the circuits/wan bandwidth.
i worked from 4pm til 8am putting filters or access-lists on the majority of our routers. The list blocked these ICMP packets at the LAN interface so it wouldn't hit the wan interface and saturate the circuit. The filter counted how many times the router got hit with an ICMP packet and a regular data packet. After a few minutes of setting the filter the count was over 1 million (bad)ICMP packets and a few hundred data(good) packets...
It affected our International sites in Asia and Europe as well.

A big pain in the butt but i got to learn a few new things.

Really, do we need to know the exact middle name of every freak who does bad things? Is this a sick deal, or what? Every single one has to have three names, every single one. It is like an obsession of the media to Make This Happen. They absolutely love when this is the case. It makes it Big.

It is like an obsession of the media to Make This Happen. They absolutely love when this is the case. It makes it Big.

It's how the news has been reported in this country for almost a hundred years now.

When someone is arrested and the authorities make a public statement, they always release the person's full name for clarity and identification purposes. It's not the media's call. They're just reporting what they've been told by the cops. It's not like they're gonna get up there and say, "yeah, we arrested 'T-Bone' McDougal"...

18 year-old arrested in Blaster case (http://www.msnbc.com/news/958852.asp?0dm=C217T)

While the original MSBlaster infected over 1 million computers, the government alleges Parson's variant infected some 7,000 computers - raising questions of how significant his role was in the overall crisis that Blaster caused for computer users.
But McKay insisted that Parson's alleged activities had a profound impact. The 7,000-computer figure, he said, "`is, I think it's fair to say, a limited estimate of what we think the impact is." Investigators were "convinced that it's quite a bit more," McKay said.

You wouldn't know this watching 90% of the reports about this case. He wasn't responsible for the original worm, so if you were affected by it it's very likely that this kid's worm wasn't the cause.

Yet I have heard many reports, even on the big cable news outlets that have more time to devote to the story, that this kid is responsible for the Blaster virus. That is wrong, and is just another example of the shoddy, lazy, incompetent journalism that has infected this country. Is it really any wonder that the public is misinformed? The fucking MEDIA is misinformed!

BTW, I'm not trying to defend this idiot. Just because he easn't successful in his attempt to fuck up our computers doesn't mean he didn't try. Fuck him.

maybe if he spent a little more time on the treadmill, and a little less time in front of the computer...he might get laid.

i think we (those of us who were affected by this) should be allowed to line up and each one throw a boot in his genitals.

No. They are not "just reporting what they've been told by the cops". Instead of reporting, they decide and choose what to name the guy.

Factually, do we say that Don Mattingly hit a homer, or Donald Arthur Mattingly hit a homer? We call people by their names, not constantly referring to their formal birth certificate driver's license passport names, but what we call them, nicknames if you will.

So in this case - as every other - the media thought it would fit in well to give this nutjob extra notoriety by falling all over themselves to call him by three names.

If that's the case, what's the deal with Jeffery Dahmer, Ted Bundy and David Berkowitz?

All pretty notorious, yet all known by two names.

But then you have Lee Harvey Oswald and John Wilkes Booth. Never known by their full names in life, but in death that's all they're known by.

Some people dont have middle names. And only in the opening paragraph of a news report do they state the full name. The rest of the time it's either a media given nickname or last name.

Bunny,
You'rre doing it again. Whenever someone says something, you come right back at them like only you have possession of the absolute truth!! What the hell difference does it make if they use 2 o 3 three names-that's their friggin' name, dammit!!
I think you were already warned by an administrator about this...and didn't you say you were going to turn over a "new leaf"??? Or is this just more words to buy yourself more time on the board

The media thought it would fit in well to give this nutjob extra notoriety

Yeah, right, because with merely the standard-issue notoriety, the story would be buried on page A32 and be barely mentioned on t.v.
So immediately after the arrest, thousands of radio, t.v, newspaper and magazine editors had this colossal conference call and decided on a plot. It's easy to imagine them all simultaneously wringing their hands fiend-style.
They would all scheme to give this guy "extra notoriety" by giving out his middle name.

Middle names aren't given to differentiate, say, a James Earl Ray from a James William Ray.
No no no no no.
Middle names are given as part of a fiendish plot by the media.

Good call there, Sparky. Uh, by the way, who are you picking in the football pool this Sunday?
Just wondering.

First of all, I think you took this too personally, no? Directing your comments at me as I am "doing it again" - doing what again, exactly? Stating my opinion on the known fact that criminals are very likely to be called to include their middle names by the media should not get you all huffy, and I think you know this reeshy.

I think you were already warned by an administrator about this...and didn't you say you were going to turn over a "new leaf"??? Or is this just more words to buy yourself more time on the board Have a nice vacation!!!

I think it is better not to comment on this statement you make. I do not believe it is correct or fair for you to make such judgements - if you have a complaint with something I said, please take it up with me here on the board in a cordial way, as I have been with you. I do not think it is proper or correct or fair for people to make false accusations, either. Oh, and I do not use foul language, and it does not faze me in the least. I am all about fair play and niceness - I have no argument with you, only discussion. So, you would do well to please act in kind. Sorry if you took it the wrong way, obviously.

Middle names are given as part of a fiendish plot by the media.

Good call there, Sparky.

Not exactly what I said. There is no "conspiracy" here, it is a given practice that when a person accused of a crime happens to have a middle name - especially if the middle name is a little off the beaten path, like "Lee" - the media's practice factually is to make sure that they call that person by all three names - it is a fact.
