I was in Jersey yesterday, and after paying at least 6 tolls to get 65 miles away, I started thinking about the state. The roads do seem to be well kept up, no pot holes and what not, but I was wondering about other stuff regarding the state. As I was going, I heard this commercial, must have been from the DOT or DMV or something about "Bob" and a Check Engine light on his dash, and how he will fail his inspection if its on when he brings it in. The state seems to place such a large emphasis on "safety" by having jug handles to prevent people from making left turns, strict vehicle inspections and the like...how come with all this safety and smooth roads, the fucking insurace is so high? Youd think with all these steps, that it would be cheap! Florida, where they have NO inspections, and where insurance is not even mandatory (which I think is stupid) has roads with no pot holes, no toll booths, and people seem to live good, for making alot less money. Whats the deal? Can it just be a states greed? Id be pissed living in Jersey if I had to put up with all this bullshit.

It couldn't possibly be that he took the first letter of Jersey and the first letter of New and placed the N in front of the "ersey" and the J in front of the "ew" could it?

Please don't tell me you're actually looking for a deeper meaning than that. Unless it's to try and make it seem like an anti-semetic thing when all sr71 did was invert the letters.

The point made is that there seems to be WAY too many toll booths in New Jersey. The only time I deal with toll booths in New York is when I'm going over bridges or through tunnels to get to Manhattan. There's always a parking lot around certain toll booths in New Jersey and lots of congestion that could easily be avoided with less tolls. Before they go and add another six lanes to each side of the Garden State Parkway why not try and remove the toll booths to see if that clears up congestion.

Also it can't be that road rage in New Jersey is caused by impatient people waiting on long Toll lines trying to get somewhere. When people get impatient and start creating their own lanes with the shoulders on the road, or cutting in and out of lanes without signalling. New Jersey is famous for lots of delays and horrible accidents which I hear about several times a day on the radio. If there wasn't so many accidents there wouldn't be such high insurance rates.

As much as there are roads that need to be fixed in New York, I'd rather drive though the various highways, parkways, and the expressway without paying a toll. Not that I'm cheap or anything, but rather to just get to where I'm actually trying to get somewhere within a reasonable amount of time. I'm happy to pay for roads to be kept up but I'd rather not have to deal with toll booths every time I want to get on a major road. They might as well install traffic lights while they're at it then.

Welcome to the State of Jim Florio and, more importantly, Christine Todd Whitman...

The tolls are quite simply a joke. The original purpose of the tolls was to pay for the construction, not the upkeep, of the GSP. Of course, the tolls were never removed as planned.

The money generated by the tolls is huge; and 70% of it goes to the cost of setting up the tolls, the EZ pass, the collectors, etc. So, for the most part; Tolls in New Jersey are collected to keep the Toll Industry alive.

The tax structure of the state, and the horrific state of the DMV, combined with shitty drivers; and the surcharges, lead us to be, I believe, #1 in the nation for cost, per capita for auto insurnace. Not sure how we rank on State Taxes, but I'm guessing top 3; I think Connecticut holds that honor.

Yep there are tolls in florida; but why, once I get into virginia, north and south carolina and georgia I can go all the way down to Maimi and not pay a cent.

Just bill me. It's unfair, but just take the cost of the tolls and add it to my bill. This will suck balls, but I will GLADLY do this then the alternative: Took me 6 hours to get from the NJ shore to Dave and Busters, and every single delay was a huge backup at each toll, big volume on the roads yes, but we were moving quite nicely, until...another fucking toll...

Fair enough, but I ask, why there? I forget how far the whole FLA Turnpike goes, but I only used it to get to Orlando from the Stuart area. I-95, if I'm not mistaken, is toll free, though I've never been south of Miami.

I guess the whole issue is consistency. I-95 what? From Maine to Key West? Beats me, I'm not sure. Someone suggested using non-tolls roads. No problem, but If you're traveling through the state on the way to somewhere else, its gonna be tough to not use the turnpike, which is I-95. You get slammed with tolls here, as well as delware and maryland, while in VA, NC, SC, GA, and the FLA part of I-95, I believe, is a freebie.

Other states where people pay tolls:
Florida, Ohio, Maryland.
So NJ is not the only place where people pay tolls.

He was saying - negatively, and also stereotyping against Jews - that New Jersey is acting "Jewish", i.e. taking a lot of $$$ from the public at large. He was using the word "Jew" in an obvious negative and disparaging way, much the same as Michael Jackson's song where he says "Jew me" in reference to getting ripped off in some fashion.

So, don't add fuel to the fire Reefdwella. It only serves to make you yourself look like a Jew-hater as well.

Obviously my play on words was taken by some to be far out of the contect to which it was meant. The inversion of the letters wasnt anti semetic at all, but a play on a concept of things being backwards. Maybe I should have entitled the Post as yesreJ weN and you wouldnt have had any issues with it. If you got offened, Im sorry, it was a joke. On the other hand, if I say something in a post some of you start, its ok and I have to take your diatribe if I disagree with your soap box tactics, and spout my own beliefs. The point of my post was, as Reefdweller correctly pointed out, the backwardsness of the states highway system. I note that no one really mentioned the other aspect I mentioned, regarding the high insurace and the apparently super liberal safety attempts at traffic flow, that I would assume would create more public safety, and Im puzzled as to why, after all this, that the car insurance rates are the higher then in any other state in the nation. Its a beautiful state with good people. I have relatives all across it, and Im not taking a swipe at the state at all. I was travelling back home at 12:30 at night and there was traffic, and thats rediculous and the only reason for it is to pay tolls. In NY, we pay our taxes for road upkeep. It comes from the tax from purchases made. I feel bad that people are being hosed and I was merely trying to show that I feel your anguish and sympathise with you. Nothing more, and I regret any distress my title may have caused.

Maybe I am seriously the only one fucked up here but after driving the hell out of the PA Turnpike for the last 10 years, I LOVE the Parkway and the way i see it, I don't care about having to pay the tolls cause they are cheaper than PA and the roads are a hell of a lot nicer too. For 75 miles to Harrisburg I would have to pay at least $5.00 and the roads are a bit shitty as well. Jersey Turnpike though is a bit of the same pricing but also a nice drive.

Thank you for agreeing with me. I must clarify what I said, because it was taken out of context. I was not accusing reefdwella of hating Jews. I know he does not hate Jews, and I am glad he had the opportunity to say so himself (see above).

Furthermore - in my opinion - NOT to antagonize anyone (take special note reeshy), I felt that the title of the thread was NOT innocuous, as if he meant to just as easily say the whole thing backwards i.e. yesrej wen. No, that is not going to fly, if you will. I think that we all know that the word "Jew" is used very carefully to have the same connotation as I quoted from Michael Jackson's song.

That's it. No trouble-making, no fighting, just stating my OPINION, if it is still ALLOWED.

actually... from going on tour with many of bands... i can tell you that nearly EVERY state has some sort of toll to their roads

maine, new hampshire, massachusetts, connecticut, new york, new jersey, pennsylvania, deleware, maryland, virginia, west virginia, ohio, kansas, missouri, oklahomo, texas, florida, north and south carolina, california, nevada, arizona.

those are the ones i know for sure off the top of my head.

and the ohio tolls are f'n expensive too. they do not go by axles there. they go buy the weight of the vehicle. so normally, we would pay the price of a normal passanger car... being how we have all the gear loaded into the van and like 7-8 people. but nope... they weigh you in ohio. i bitched them out for that... because the price went from like 12 bucks to 26 bucks like that.
