View Full Version : The structure behind roadsigns

The signs used on roadways have this metal structure with a crisscross of beams and metal to hold the whole thing in place though adverse weather and other conditions. Is there a term for this design that's used? Also is there a history of how that particular design ultimately came about? It seems to be some form of geometry at work.
I've included a picture of one such road sign in case it's hard to understand what I'm talking about.

I don't know what the design is called or it's history, but it's strong and lightwieght. The openess of it allows wind to go through without taking the whole thing down. Suspension brigdes are a similar design.

Its called a "Truss"
Basically, its very similar to how a bicycle gets its strength. A bicycles frame is a flattened diamond shaped structure. The opposite points of the diamond, upon being stressed, cannot compress the diamond shape easily, and that is where its gets its strength from.

The design is also used at concerts and wrestling events when they put up the lights. I would imagine it having a name, although i dont know it.
And to comply with DMMoe's image game:

Sure you can, just either change the link to the existing image within the code, or just De1ete the entire code itself and start over. You'll probably have to move the code though, so it's above your sigpic though (copy and paste).

SR71's got it, it's called a truss. You can spot them all over the place really... one that springs to mind is the towers of the GWB, and the road bed.
