STARKE, Florida (AP) -- Paul Hill, a former minister who said he murdered an abortion doctor and his bodyguard to save the lives of unborn babies, was executed Wednesday by injection.

I heard on the news that during his final statement, he thought he was doing God's work and would be rewarded in heaven for this nobel act.
I love what religion does to some people.
Well, too bad there isn't a hell for this man to suffer in. At least we can all be proud of that fact that our justice system kills these people. I only wish that instead of some expensive form of execution, they's simply shoot people like this in the head 3 or 4 times. It would save SO MUCH money. All you'd need is a gun, 4 bullets, a Dr0p cloth and a mop for each execution.
And put a national lottery system in effect for the person who gets to walk up to them and pull the trigger!

[color=purple]Moe, this is a completely serious question, but could/would you actually pull the trigger?
And I suppose everybody else who seems to be celebrating this guy's execution should answer too.

That is a fiar question. I have posed the question to the board before. Could you kill? And if memory serves most people said they could kill a person who was threatening or had harmed themselves or their loved ones.
This guy took his religious convictions to a level where he thought HE was the great messenger that needed to take action for his God. He decided it was OK for him to end the lives of people who h didn't agree with. And because of this, I think I could easily pull the trigger. It would be hard for me even after all that, but not impossible.

celebrate, no. how does this douche contribute to the progress of humanity? perhaps putting the gun in the hand of any anti/pro- abortion advocate would level the field of opinion. there are certain people and certain instances were someone should not exist; same coin, different side.

[color=purple]See, here's the problem with this logic; who decides? You don't feel this guy deserved to exist, this guy didn't feel the abortion doctor deserved to exist.
We killed him for committing two murders, he killed the doctor becuase he believed he had committed hundreds of murder.
Obviously, I condemn what he did. And I certainly won't be shedding a tear over his demise. But there does seem to be some contradiction when a society says murder is wrong, and to prove it we commit yet another murder.
Of course I'm speaking purely philosophically here. As Moe points out, if I actually knew the victim, I don't doubt I'd be begging to pull the trigger. My brother's a police officer, and every time I hear of a cop being shot, or, as was the case in Brooklyn two months back, killed, I pretty much wanna kill the cocksuckers who did it myself.
But that's emotion talking. I guess this is just one of those issues, much like abortion itself, where even the right answer seems sorta wrong.

We draw the line at our laws. There's a reason religion was kept out of our government. It makes people LOONY!!!!
HIM killing was wrong. US killing was according to our laws that were made by elected officials. Laugh all you want at our system, but it's the best one in the world and I am happy when it works.

[color=purple]But laws are subjective and ever changing. In places like Saudi Arabia, the law demands that a woman be killed for dressing improperly. Does that make it right right?
In 1940's Germany, the law called for the death of all Jews, but it doesn't get any wronger than that.
Even in this country, it was just over a century ago where a black man could be killed with little or no legal recourse.
Morally speaking, what's right and wrong usually has very little to do with the law.

Death is an easy way out actually.
I think that hell is actually carrying with the guilt of your actions for a lifetime. Too many of these kinds of people want the death penalty, and as a society, we cop out if we simply allow them to escape their personal hell.

i would take a guess and say most murderers feel very little guilt. they are probably just bitter they got caught. it would save a lot of money to terminate these people right away. otherwise we are paying for their cable tv, meals, and library books...

So, it's cheaper to kill them?
I'd say many murderers eventually do feel remorse, and on another level, murderers accused of capital crimes are self destructive to begin with so we are just facilitating their suicides.
I suppose the basic question is, how is it that we want our penal system to work? Do we want to have a reform system, in the hopes of possibly returning criminals to society to function? Or, are we simply committed to punishment for crimes?
I lean towards the idea that the reason there are so many repeat offenders, is because we fail as a society to address the root causes of violence.
There are sociopaths that can never be reformed, but there are many more inmates that are simply victims of circumstance, included lack of education, poverty, skills, employment, etc.
In this specific case, there is a unsettling dynamic because as punishment for murder, we are murdering someong who committed murder based on his belief that he was punishing murders.
I'm not completely decided on the death penatly, but I don't believe in an eye for an eye, because then we'll just have a world full of blind people.

[color=purple]People have been sentenced to death row, and later found to be innocent. Given this, it's safe to assume that innocent people have been put to death under the death penalty.
We know that it doesn't serve as a deterrent. States with the death penalty, some of which are among the most active in actually carrying out these sentences, also continue to have the highest murder rate.
We also know that our justice system, while perhaps the best (and certainly best intentioned) in all the World, is far from perfect. For more on this see O.J. Simpson.
The rich continue to receive far greater legal representation than do the poor. That fact alone calls the entire death penalty system into question.
If you want to say that inmates convicted of violent crimes, the kind of crimes that would result in a capital punishment sentence, should be deprived of all but the basic necessities of life (food, clothing, shelter), I'm right there with you.
But for a society that prides itself on being so evolved, so above the fanaticism we see in the Arab World, there's something about coming together in the light of day to systematically take a human life that leaves me kinda cold.

We've got a built-in gulag in the form of Alaska.
USE IT.
The death penalty's negative points FAR outweigh the positives.
Keeping it active puts us in the company pretty much only the communist and terrorist nations we claim to hate so much.
The solution isn't in killing more prisoners, but actually attempting serious reform and cracking down on the prison system itself. 100 years ago, America's prison system was admired around the world and considered the perhaps the greatest created in modern civilization. Why don't we shoot for that again?
