Im reading this book

http://www.frenchculture.org/books/pix/aldermeasure180.jpg

And it deals with these two astronomers in the late 1700's during the French Revolution who were put to the task of measuring the meridian to determine the size of the Earth and then use the Earths size as a basis for a new measurment system that became known as the Metric system. Apart from a swipe at the US near the beginning for being the only nation in the world not to have this system implimented as a standard, it seems a pretty interesting book so far. The Metric system seems to be an easier system, conceptually, as its based on 10, which is easier to calculate than what we use. In theirs, they simply move a decimal or whatever. In my mind, growing up as we did here with gallons and inches and feet and miles, I have a good grasp of measurments, but I see where ours isnt that good when you ask someone how many feet are in a mile (5280) or ounces in a gallon (128) and no one seems to know. But where they use the Metric system, if you ask a kid how many meters are in a kilometer, they know it (1000), even millimeters (1 000 000) and it seems very simple. I grew up not have a good head for math and struggled with that my whole life. Im just wondering if anyone knows why we never implimented it here. I guess I would hate to have to make that transition of paying $1.89 for a gallon of gas now, then have to pay who-knows-what for a liter of gas!

We don't use it, but yet we're the richest most powerful nation in the world. Maybe THEY should move to OUR system. We're not Eurotrash fucks who need to kick soccer balls around and call it football. We're red blooded Americans and we kick ass!!!

There are efforts (http://lamar.colostate.edu/~hillger/) under way to convert the U.S. to the metric system, but I don't think it will happen any time soon.

Here's some websites that discuss and teach the metric system...

Based on $1.89 per gallon, a liter would only cost $0.50!

I've always wanted a Stanley metric system tape measure for my tool belt.
Not to use, mind you, but to toss to the next asshole that shows up on my jobsite without a fuckin' tape measure who comes around borrowing.

Funny thing is, in Europe, they pay a little less PER LITER than we pay PER GALLON.

It comes out to somewhere around 5 bucks a gallon!!

Now you know why most of the cars in Europe are little 1.6-liter-engine economy cars, with manual transmissions. Unless you're really rich, you can't afford more than that.

If it was that expensive here, there would be riots...

U.S. Council of Standards and Measurements
explains the "Decabet" the new metric alphabet consisting
of 10 letters. "A-B-C and D, our most popular letters, will
remain the same. E and F, however, will be combined and
graphically simplified to one character. The groupings G-H-I
and L-M-N-O will be condensed to single letters.
(Incidentally, a boon to those who always thought that L-
M-N-O was one letter anyway.) And finally, the 'trash
letters,' or P-Q-R-S-T-U-V-W-X-Y and Z, will be condense"
to one "easily identifiable dark character."

Napoleon officially established the metric system as the
measuring system of France. And I think Hitler was like a big fan
of it. That tells you about that dirty system. Dirty metrics.
