How are the boys doing in the DC area? What's their ranking now and where can I look to see how they are doing ratings wise (if there is a site).

And do they have rankings for which show had the highest ratings thus far? (while they've been in DC)?

Thanks.

No word yet, but the next BIG book should be out later in September (I think), and then it takes some time for the info to sprinkle out.

Someone should look into buying some ad space somewhere (or taking up a pool of like minded people) to congratulate R&F - somewhere like Radio and Record, or The Washington City Paper - or should something like that wait until they do hit #1.

Great head's up with the ratings hyperlink!

Hopefully a solid ratings book will give Ron and Fez the opportunity for more control and better support from management. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.

I know other books in the past have not meant much due to the shows newness at that D.C time slot so is it safe to say this is the book with a large impact for the show?

I'll admit full cluelessess here as I know NOTHING of radio ratings.

What's a full rating's period? And is this the first full one R&F have had moved to DC?

Hopefully a solid ratings book will give Ron and Fez the opportunity for more control and better support from management.

Exacta-mundo.

Or in other words, a "staff of their own".

And while I love the 11 AM show, I'd hope they wouldn't have to do it if it's really hell on their schedule.

From DCRTV:

JFK Takes A Dump - 9/16 - No big changes in the 9/16 Arbitrends for the DC market, except that hot talker WJFK-FM plunged from 11th to 14th in the overall age 12+ numbers. As usual, urban WPGC-FM remained in 1st, with adult urban WMMJ 2nd, and all-news WTOP 3rd. Urban WKYS jumped one notch to 4th, with adult urban WHUR down one place to 5th. Classical WGMS remained in 6th, smooth jazz WJZW jumped one place to 7th, with news talk WMAL and country WMZQ tied for 8th. Oldies WBIG was down two to 10th, rhythmic contemporary WIHT was up one to 12th, hot adult contemporary was up one to 13th, JFK-FM was down to 14th, rocker DC101 15th, classic rock WARW 16th, hot adult contemporary WWZZ/WWVZ 17th, sports talk WTEM 18th, with religious WAVA and alt rock WHFS tied for 19th. Morning drive (age 12+): WTOP 1st, WMMJ 2nd, WPGC-FM 3rd, WKYS 4th, WRQX 5th, WJFK-FM 6th, WMAL and WMZQ and WGMS tied for 7th, and DC101 10th. PM drive (age 12+): WPGC-FM 1st, WTOP 2nd, WMMJ 3rd, WJFK-FM 4th, WMAL and WKYS 5th, WJZW 7th, WGMS 8th, WBIG 9th, and WIHT 10th. Other interesting tidbits (all age 12+): Rush Limbaugh was down from 1st to 3rd in middays, with WJFK-FM's Bill O'Reilly at 14th. The Junkies on WHFS placed 17th in AM drive. WJFK-FM's infomercial laden weekend programming didn't even make the top 20 - below Spanish WBZS/WBPS and gospel WYCB. Ron and Fez on WJFK-FM placed 18th in evenings. Baltimore's numbers are again embargoed.....

I'll admit full cluelessess here as I know NOTHING of radio ratings.

It's a weird, inexact science.

The Arbitron's are a ratings service, like the Nielsens for TV. There are other's, but the Arbs are used most I believe. 'Used' meaning the ratings in these books is a large factor in selling the station, meaning, making money with advertising $$.

Ratings go by 'Season'. Fall 2002, Winter 2002, Spring 2003, etc [that may be off a bit]. But a full ratings book is a quarter of a year. 3 Months of Radio.

If the above blurb is correct it means this.

In the Washington DC Radio Market in Age 12+

[Note: 12+ basically means Overall. All ages groups included. The arbs are further broken down by age demographics [18-35, for example], but the numbers here mean for ALL ages.]

WJFK
Overall = 14th place
AM Drive [Howard Stern] = 6th place
PM Drive [Don and Mike] = 4th place
Evenings [Ron and Fez] = 18th place

Again, ratings is an inexact science at best. Having said that this is not a good Ratings book for R+F if the above is indeed correct.

[EDIT: Another important piece of info I forgot. The Ratings dont factor in Format. Meaning, if Don and Mike are 4th in evening drive, the other three stations may well be Music, News, Sports, or other Talk. So 4th overall can mean 1st in the Talk format.

Hence you hear 'WABC; the most-listened to Talk Radio Station in New York'. True, but I dont even think they're in the top 5 overall.]

Another thing to factor in are the ratings by gender, because the shows that run on WJFK generally appeal to male listeners. Poor overall numbers that are dragged down by a lack of female listeners may actually be strong with the male demographic.

Here is how it actually read at dcrtv.com:

Ron and Fez on WJFK-FM ranked 18th in evenings, although they did place 7th among 25-54ers.

Which is a bit better than what was posted.

This was worse than I feared. :(

Can somebody compare the "Sports Junkies" show at that time slot prior to "Ron & Fez" taking over? That may be a more fair comparison due to the lack of interest in talk radio (overall) in the D.C area.

I'm not too worried about Ron and Fez - there is too much else that's really wrong with WJFK to start pointing fingers at them. All indications are that the station is going to remain patient and let them build an audience; the question remains, at one time of the day?!

Can somebody compare the "Sports Junkies" show at that time slot prior to "Ron & Fez" taking over? That may be a more fair comparison due to the lack of interest in talk radio (overall) in the D.C area.

The Junks left evenings on top.

If I remember correctly, though, they were never a factor rating wise until their 3rd or even 4th year (they bolted for WHFS after 5 years, when they finally achieved #1 status) - it took them a long time to build any sort of loyal following in the evenings (which they threw away when they went to mornings).

In the spring of 2002, D&M and the Junks were doing great, while Stern and O&A weren't; this was odd, because the Junks actually did their best when O&A were their lead in, although they got better ratings than O&A, while Don and Mike made it to #1 in mid-days here in DC in less than 2 books, and were doing better than Stern.

Then and now - now it looks like Stern is strong again, after stumbling, and Don and Mike have not been able to find everyone that was there in the drive time they had back in 2001.

Bottom line for R&F: WJFK just needs to get their head out of their ass - put Ron and Fez on during the day; get rid of O'Reilly; and let a new show take hold in the evenings, or get the Junks back.

Ron and Fez put on the best radio anywhere at any time, and they will be rewarded for it, eventually.

Correct-a-mundo!!!!

Before any discussion of how R+F play into this, you have to look at the station.

What leads into R+Fs morning show? Another stations show.

What follows R+Fs morning show? Another stations show. Best of.

What leads into R+Fs evening show? Don and Mike

What follows R+Fs evening show? Another stations show, I believe.

Now by 'another stations show' I mean that they arent broadcasting at WJFK. We all know where Howard's from, and it's not a DC show. If I'm not mistaken, O'reilly is also syndicated. meaning, there are plenty of other places to hear them.

I don't get WJFK so I may be wrong on some of the above; but if it is correct, it means that R+F, besides D+M [when thats live] are the only thing Live originating from WJFK.

This is not the sign of a healthy station, in my opinion.

I have this crazy idea of stations actually trying to find talent like R+F as opposed to just playing a syndicated show. It's TALK and Talk is two-way, if it's done right.

And R+F do talk better then any show on the dial. Other shows may be better in other ways, but the calls per hour R+F take are HUGE compared to almost ANY other talk show.

What WJFK needs is more shows from WJFK, where you can call the hosts at WJFK and engage them on-air from WJFK.

Crazy idea eh?

And the weekends filled with infomercials? Thats easy. That = Radio Death.

Sadly, this is how it was for R+F after O+A left. At worst, they were literally and exactly the Only on-air people at the station; I saw it, the whole floor was deserted.

Anyway...

IF there was radio underground, AND people LISTENED to the R&F show HERE, couldn't there be some way to let the station know that you listened to the show? It seems that ALOT of people listen to R&F this way and the Arbitron ratings don't take into account this.

The underground is unfortunately of no help to the show itself and has nothing to do with ratings or the show's success. Underground radio just offers fans the opportunity to continue listening to a show that is out of their market, country or now even continent! :)

Correct - no way to spin the current ratings. They stink on ice. Thankfully WJFK is going to give them time to get listeners up to speed.

Mike's right about the lack of "home" shows, and that's something that has ALWAYS struck me as odd about WJFK.

I've been listening to the station for about 7 years now, and I've never known them to have more than three shows during the week being broadcasted from the station. When I started it was G. Gordon Liddy, D&M and the Junkies, then just the latter two, and now just D&M and R&F. I think KOP is right and that the boys should get the move to middays. Sandwiched between the two shows that pull in decent ratings not just for the station but in the general market overall is just what they need and deserve.

And the weekends are a mess. There's the El Jefe show floating out there, the unlistenable Gos' Garage each weekend morning from like noon-three, I think. Sundays are eaten up by Redskins football for most of the year, which I assume gets decent ratings. And then you have the State Theater Music Show on Sunday nights. Personally, I think they should try something like the Music Show in the evening slot from 7-11. Maybe not THIS music show (But something similar...interviews, highlighting local and "underground bands", etc.), but something to switch it up. And get a decent 11-3 show that grow and develop. Maybe a sports show to, again, keep some variety on the station lineup so it's not ALL "just talk". The overnights right now are awful during the week. Jim Kramer's money babblings and some new feed that runs for about six hours until Howard comes on. Go back to replays, namely of R&F...try and cram in the "new show" whenever you can! Replay time on the weekends is eaten up by D&M, which makes NO sense to me since they've already found their audience. Give exposure to the new show, dammit!

With few exceptions (Redskins radio; Capital Radio) the weekends on WJFK have always been a nightmare. Why they are afraid to program music, or do something really different is beyond me.

(Thankfully I do think the D&M replays on weekends are down to one 4 hour block again for the whole weekend).

The local thing is one aspect, but I'm not convinced that all of the shows have to be at the same station - I know there are stations around the country that do well with syndication making up most of their programming. Having more local could help, but I'm not sure it's what's hurting JFK.

Two more things to think about - WJFK is losing much of it's ground to the all news talker, WTOP, a trend across the country when the war started. Not sure how you program against that, but there is where I think many of the WJFK listeners went to.

Also, they need to examine the ads they sell and ask themselves if it helps or hurts the station to be airing commercials to alternative programming - XM radio and promos for television shows. Movies are different, because some thought and effort goes into that, but if you are listening to Ron and Fez, and suddenly they run a commercial for SURVIVOR, and you can easily turn off R&F in favor of television, that just seems stupid. Add to that the fact that they will run commercials for competing shows back to back, effective giving the casual listener more excuse not to listen for 4 hours.

Ron and Fez will be given tons and tons of time; don't worry about them. The pressure isn't on them to pull in the huge numbers as before, because there is realistic expectations - the whole station is not living or dying on them making it here.

The truth about WJFK and the money they make

According to a 2000 Ad-Biz magazine article, WJFK, billed in ad revenue (for 1999) approx $22 million dollars - almost half that amount ($9.5 million) came from afternoon drive only (Don and Mike). An almost equal amount of money is made from Stern.

This made them (WJFK) the second most valuable station in Washington DC, billing wise (behind Infinity owned WPGC).

According to Radio Reporter Frank Aherns, in 2000, WJFK (a station with a horrible signal, by the way) billed $38 million. At that rate, JFK could be pulling in easily over $45 - $60 million, all on the backs of Stern and Don and Mike.

I'm guessing that it could be a lot more today.

WJFK is not WNEW - They have been doing this kind of radio for almost 12 years; they are not pinning their last hopes of survival on Ron and Fez. In the (not so distant past) that have proven that they can afford to have a mid-day show that doesn't perform (as they did for over 10 years with Liddy), or an evening show that takes awhile to find it's peeps (like the Junks), or a weekend of dead air (like all the damn time, except when the Skins are playing).

WHEN Ron and Fez are finally given a home of their own (middays 11-3), they will kick ass, make Infinity a lot of money, and will be rewarded.

NO! Don't move R & F to middays! The schedule right now is great, 2 doses of R & F! They have homes of their own, 7-11 and 11-12.

The Junkies pulled in great ratings in the 7-11 timeslot so we shouldn't blame the timeslot or the lack of "home" shows because the Junkies pulled in great ratings even when it was only them and D & M doing their shows from JFK.
