I remember seeing them in downtown Philadelphia years ago, in the late 80's. A couple of years ago I noticed one in Times Square. It stopped me in my tracks because I recognized it but couldn't place where I saw it. A recent trip to Philly brought it all together for me and I found this great web site listing all known locations.
They are in Washington D.C. as well.
It's a mystery who puts them there or what it even means. The sign maker is probably isn't right in the head, but he or she has created something. Mysterious art? Menacing litter? Physical graffiti?
I was wondering if anyone else had ever noticed these signs.

Roland the headless Thompson gunner... The eternal Thompson gunner, still wandering through the night. Now it's ten years later but he still keeps up the fight. In Ireland, in Lebanon, in Palestine and Berkeley. Patty Hearst heard the burst of Roland's Thompson gun And bought it

My guess is some wacky homeless guy with a can of spray paint and a stencil who talks to himself. Either that or he's on his hands-free cell phone. I can never tell those guys apart.

Ha. On that link they refer to the NY Times reporter Corey Kilgannon. He was visiting my study site a few weeks ago and he was totally creepy and hit on me.
I have never seen those signs. How could a homeless loony get to all those cities???

I doubt he is homeless. It is probably some eccentric nut job with some money and a lot of time on his hands. Each sign is different and made by hand. Whatever his purpose, he's created an almost unseen art display. They're everywhere, but a majority of the people never notices them.
