On 9/11/01, I lost my cousin. He was a fireman that responded to the WTC on that horrible day. I lost other friends (and their loss is felt just as much) but this man was part of my family. His dad was my dad's lieutenant when they were firemen together(they were first cousins).
When Joseph and I were teenagers, we used to go to the firehouse down in Hunt's Point to make a few bucks cleaning up the place, running errands, even help with the cooking. Joe always said how he always wanted to be a firefighter like my dad and his. He always had this goal in mind.
Years later, I used to run into him when he was at a fire or aided case (I was on a different city job) We'd shoot the shit and then meet after work for a few drinks and catch up on our families.
As the anniversary looms upon us, he and my other friends are heavy on my mind and I realize how much I miss Joe and the rest of the crew. I hope that they are all happy in Heaven and know that I still love and miss them all.

Hey Reeshy,

This is a tough time of year, ESPECIALLY for those who lost a loved one on that awful day.

But you posted about your cousin so that keeps him "alive" in your heart. And I hope you don't take that as a "flip" remark. I lost my mom and dad when I was young. Not a day goes by that I don't think about them. Plenty of people told me, "They're always alive in your heart." FU was my initial response. But as time went by and I told funny and sweet stories about them, I noticed I made people laugh and smile. THAT is what keeps them alive-- they can touch people in some way after they're gone.

Alot of people who lost loved ones started foundations in their name, named streets and libraries after them. That in itself is amazing, but simply sharing stories and memories about them can be incredibly healing.

So, just keep sharing about your cousin and comrades.

I always thought that if I held you tightly
You'd always love me like you did back then

Its our love for those lost that makes us so determined to prove to these creeps that did this to us that we will not allow their memory to be squashed, nor their plight to go unavenged. We are a good people, regardless of what they think.

The word heroes seems to get thrown around a little loosely sometimes, but Firemen are "true" heroes.

bear the hurt and enjoy the memory of the time you spent together...

PEACE!
