View Full Version : O'Reilly calls "War on Terror" WW III.

Tonight I caught "The O'Reilly Factor" for the 1st time in a long time. I guess it's because I was watching the news a lot today.

During his opening segment he referred to the War on Terror we are now fighting as Wolrd War 3.

Now I think this is a little over the top. Sure, people all over the world are involved, but in small fights and intelligence gathering. Not a full scale war.

I like Bill, but in my opinion this is just some stunt he's pulling, hoping some Lib on a show picks up on it and blasts him for it, thereby gaining some more publicity. He must have slipped a few tenths of a point in the ratings or something.

Yea, I finf myself agreeing with him most of the time, but I can see why even people who think like him might hate his guts. He's abrasive, arrogant and sometimes just sounds plain uninformed.

But he's entertaining. I guess no host or anshor is perfect. You always get a little of their political slant, even if they're just reading off a tele-prompter.

Speaking of Bill O'Reilly, here's a cute quote from him:

"If the Americans go in and overthrow Saddam Hussein and it's clean, he has nothing, I will apologize to the nation and I will not trust the Bush administration again." Bill O'Reilly on GMA, March 18, 2003, as quoted by Utne Reader, Septmber 2003, p.16

"World War II" wasn't coined until later. At that time, World War I was referred to as "The Great War" or "The War To End All Wars".

There's a name that stuck.

I don't think you can really call it WWIII, becuase it's really a continuation of the same conflict that's been going on for thousands of years in that area. It's really nothing more than religion-influenced hatred.

If anything memorable comes out of this war, it could be remembered as the day the U.S. turned it's back on the world, bit off more than it could chew and bankrupted itself, Thanks to GW beleiving he could end something that's been going on for as long as it has.

the war on terrorism should be called "the war that never ends" or "the eternal conflict" because that is what it has been, is, and will always be.

this is the 'war that never ends'
it just goes on and on my friends
some people started exploding
and not knowing what it was 'for'
and they'll continue killing forever 'just because'

World War III would only be appropriate if the superpowers decided to start flinging nukes at each other...

Yes, that's exactly correct.

You really have no REAL understanding of what's going on in the world, do you?

O'Reilly missed a page in the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy playbook; some of his compatriots are calling it WW IV (the Cold War with the Commies having been renamed WW III).

I always have to take my hat off to the Republicans in that they know that by controlling the language in the debate they control the outcome and Dammit! they EXECUTE. (In your FACE, Noam Chomsky!!)

Look at what he's trying to do: What are the connotations of World Wars for Americans? WW1 - well, aside from some Archduke getting a cap busted in his ass no one remembers what it was about but we do remember it was long and bloody and a draw 'til we got there on the side of the countries that had lent us money in the preceding 50 years and We Kicked Ass! (Kinda like those wrestling guys who come running down the aisle and jumping in the ring to help the Good Guys win!)
WWII we know about. We saved Europe and part of Asia from two of the most evil regimes our species has yet come up with.

And how did we do it? By sucking it up as a society, sacrificing (both blood and money) and, most importantly from O'Reilly's (et al.) perspective,
getting behind our leader and shutting the fuck up. By casting all decisions/policies as a "War" (eg. the War on Poverty, the War on Drugs, the War on Terrorism) our beloved leaders expect us to fall in line and zip it with those nosey questions.
(From the old- What did the Viet Cong ever do to us? to the current - Where's the WMD, George? Halliburton is getting paid How Much?)

You have to admire them for going with what works. And if it keeps working we have no one to blame but ourselves.

What do you call it? Instead of Just saying "you're wrong because I don't like you" Why don't you give a reason or two why? What evidence do you have that we're not bankrupting ourselves and burning all ties with the outside world that we're going to have to go to for help?

No, no, NO...it's only a "world war" if you can get other countries to fight with you against some other bunch of countries. Calling the "war on terror" a "world war" is like saying Prozac is the atom bomb in the "world war on grumpiness".

I don't know, that sounds a bit like a crusade, and we want to avoid any of that talk.

Anyway, It can't be a real world war without Germany. as long as they stay pussified, we'll have to call it something else . . . how bout "Third- World" War?

DMM - I saw/heard the same thing.

Actually, I've been of the mind-set that WW3 has been going on for quite awhile, it's just that we have been a little late to the party. From Israeil to India, with Iraq and Iran in the middle, things have been getting uglier and uglier for quite some time.

O'Reilly is such a chode - the fact that the worst he can say about Bush is that he "won't call this WWIII" just underscores his role as a subversive conservative; the biggest hypocrite of them all, since what he always calls for is honesty in motivations from others.

Pah!

I think he's 100 x worse than Hannity, Rush, Liddy or any of the other "right minded American" talkers out there; with them, they are up front with their agendas.

As someone with 3 nephews between 16 and 21, what concerns me most about Bill "I Never Served A Moment In The Military" O'Liar's comments about calling this WWIII is that (at least on his radio show) it lead the train of thought all the way down the road towards a return to the draft.

At least when I was listening, he didn't come out and say that, but he sure took the conversation right to that doorstep, and then stepped back.

It's a holy war on their side is what I mean. Most people here in America don't give a shit which God is better, just so long as that God doesn't tell you to annihilate the infidels.

Damn Teenweek's sig is HUGE. But anyway,

And if it keeps working we have no one to blame but ourselves.

i agree with all of that. In many ways calling this a world war makes it justified that everyone should fall in line. But the difference between this and the World Wars (and even the Cold War that is called WWIII by righties) is that in those wars even intellectuals were convinced that there was no choice other than the one provided by the US government. Socialists were a threat to the first real major war effort that we had ever undertaken in WWI, the Japanese were a threat to WWII's war effort, and Communists provided a threat to the "war" effort of both WWII and the Cold War.

However, the "war on terror" is not an actual war that we can "lose". There's no threat to us if we lose, so there's no reason to shut up and let the central government tell us what to do. In that way maybe we're breaking the chains that made the oppression of Wilson, the Republican Congress during WWII, and basically all of the governments between 1946 and 1991, acceptable. Too many people think that O'Reilly is full of shit to let him say that is a war that is necessary. (I'm sure i just totally took Recyclerz' post and imparted my own politics on it, and upon reading this he will sit agape at his computer)

but i think the bigger issue is that Teenweek's sig is way too big. MAN, that sig is TOO BIG.
